Proper cloth faces stiff competition from Spier and MacKay and Luxire. I'd go with any of the three depending on my preferred fabric and collar type. Spier and Mackay offers the cooper collar which is the absolute best shirt for going without a tie. Ratio has the most sophisticated shirt fit adjustments, and offers some great long collar points. The Roma button down collar makes for a superb OCBD, with 4" collar points! Proper cloth also has an actual brick and mortar showroom that you can go to for fitting, if you can make it into NYC. Luxire offers the deepest customization. You can basically freetext whatever you want into your order comment and they'll probably do it. Custom collar sizes, band height adjustment, rear collar buttons, etc. Their Broke and Bespoke collar is excellent for OCBD as well with 3.6" collar points. Luxire also has the most fabric options, free mother of pearl buttons, and generally the cheapest price point, with Spier being usually slightly more expensive, and Proper Cloth being the most expensive. There are also some pretty interesting shirtmakers form Singapore, Yeossal and Collaro, who also do very long collar points and cooper collars, but at a bit higher price point.

Thanks for the great write-up. If someone is starting out and looking to stay within a lower budget, S&M is very hard to beat. In my experience, their shirts are prone to shrinkage unless that’s been fixed. I’ve always heard great things about Luxire although I’ve never tried them.
@anttiskate3 ай бұрын
If you don’t need extensive customization, Luxire is a bit pricey. Especially for the european cloths. Plus their website user experience is truly awful. The product and service is top notch though.

I can vouch for Proper Cloth! Thanks for the upload. Question? You mentioned washing the shirt several times. Do you normally “hand-wash”,”machine wash”, or take your shirts to the cleaners?
@v_r_7 ай бұрын
I use to dry clean my shirts but now I machine wash them using the delicate cycle and let them air dry. As far as the shirt that I’m wearing in the video, I hand washed it since it wasn’t dirty and it was just one shirt.

They are my primary MTM shirt provider. Like the non iron shirts. I love the hidden button down collar option. One lesson learned - if you dont wear ties, get the standup placket option as some of the shirts have a reputation for collar collapse when worn unbuttoned. Lastly the question remains - are they the best MTM suit and sport coat program ? Will they outshine Spier & Mackay? Jury is out as I have sent two suits back to them for fit issues and waiting on a third replacement.
@v_r_7 ай бұрын
Good tip! I haven’t tried their suit program yet but I heard it’s not as easy as measuring a jacket that fits you well and try to duplicate it. Is that what you did and what were the issues?

Vlad, quick question. Maker of those suspenders @9:24? Your style,recommendations and insights on menswear are best on KZbin! I don't wear business attire and formalwear often but when I do, I wear it with confidence thanks to the information you've shared over the yrs. Thank you for what you do.

Appreciate your kind words, fam! Those are boxcloth suspenders from Albert Thurston. You can often find them brand new on eBay.
@pattgsm2 ай бұрын
A few years ago, I purchased a set of Albert Thurston suspenders. I've noticed that the back half of your pair has a very interesting design with the ring, which is not a typical Y-strap or a normal X-harness type. Is this a specific model or style of suspender? I'm currently searching through the Albert Thurston website and eBay for that style. Edit: I've found that the Boxcloth suspenders come in this design, while the elastic and woven ones have the Y and X configurations that I'm more familiar with. Thanks again!

@v_r_7 ай бұрын
I agree that buying clothes online is usually an adventure. The good thing with Proper Cloth is they have a ton of experience, so as long as you have a good-fitting shirt to duplicate the measurements, it’ll more than likely work out. Not to mention that they offer two complimentary remakes just in case.

Nice video. Could you do an extensive review of the Suitsupply custom-made shirt program? There are reviews of Suitsupply's custom suit program on KZbin, but none on their custom shirts, especially regarding white dress shirts. I also have two questions: What are your thoughts on having an elevated height of the collar, for example 4 cm instead of 3.5 cm? Suitsupply offered this option, but they have unfortunately taken it out of their custom program. I wondered what the difference is between having a 4 cm collar height and a 3.5 cm height. Another question (I am talking about when wearing a tie): I used to wear metal collar stays with my off-the-rack business dress shirts for a long time because style youtubers recommended metal collar stays. Since the non-iron fabric was rather stiff, it seemed ok. Once I started buying high-quality custom shirts recently with Thomas Mason non-iron cotton fabric, I noticed that aesthetically the metal collar stays are somewhat visible from within the fabric of the collar and let the collar's natural way of draping be hampered. The flexible plastic collar stays on the other hand seem to give the collar a more natural drape and look when I tie my tie. What do you think? I used to look down upon the plastic collar stays and think that the metal ones were better. Now I seem to be changing my mind.
@v_r_4 ай бұрын
Thank you! Collar height is all about finding the right balance. If you have a longer neck and/or a slimmer face, then a higher collar makes sense. Regarding Suitsupply, I did reach out to work with them but I don’t enough followers yet 😂. As far as collar stays, my recommendation is horn or bone. They’re more flexible than metal and more durable and classy than plastic.

Great review as usual Vlad...I've been hearing about Proper Cloth lately. Will be ordering one today to try out. On a side note...wondering if you would consider doing a video of the style differences between English and Italian. I think some believe English/American style is more for corporate and gentlemen look while the Italian style is for guys who want to be more trendy and may not be appropriate for the office or as an addition to a "gentlemen's" wardrobe.

Any thoughts on Proper Cloth's Londoner collar?
@v_r_10 күн бұрын
The points are too short for my liking. I always recommend 3.5” minimum to ensure they always stay hidden under the jacket’s lapels.
@jipmaster5510 күн бұрын
@@v_r_ That makes sense. My only hesitancy on the 3.5 point length is that I am only 5'8 and about 155 lbs, so I don't want it to look overwhelmingly long on me. Thank you for the response!

My only beef with Proper Cloth is that they don’t adjust the width of the standard placket proportionally with the width of the shirt. This is really more of a short/slim guy problem than a complaint but it would be great if they were able to offer a slim placket. The shirts I ordered from them were lovely but the placket was too wide for my build. It looked a little off.
