Electric Classic Cars

Never mind Teslas, Nissan Leafs, Polestars or Renault Zoes, in this episode we take a look at what we think is the best EV in the world. The Tesla powered VW Crewcab. It's certainly no Tesla Cybertruck but it has 6 seats, a 100kWh battery pack, CCS charging, a pickup on the back and can tow. It's suitable for the family and work and looks great too.
Is there a better electric vehicle out there, or is this the best electric car in the world?

Calling it a "Voltswagen" is genius. The perfect vehicle for people who do outdoor things. I love the stealth/sleeper vibe, too.

No, for my money, there can't be any better. I love it, makes me nostalgic because I used to work at VWSA where this one was built - started there in 1970 but this rage were still in production. With regards to the original's nought to sixty, we used to say you need a calendar to measure that, not a stop watch. Happy driving.

This is exactly the car I need! Six seats, towing, and truck bed! Why can’t any automaker see the need for such a true utility vehicle?!!
@lsh3rd
@lsh3rd Жыл бұрын
No automaker would be able to make this vehicle today due to safety concerns... the closest would be the Canoo, but they've pushed the driver way back, which kind of un-does the packaging practicality of the original VW type 2.

I drove both this and a short Land Rover when I was very young and worked for the Danish Air Force. After a whole day on the Land Rover's 1/2 inch "cushioned seat" you were very tired at a certain point. The VWen was much more comfortable to drive, and with the engine at the very rear it performed surprisingly well off-road and on slippery mud roads. With the batteries in the middle of your updated model, I can imagine that the weight distribution is close to optimal.

I love the cab over configuration and have owned a bay VW van. I don't understand why the domestic van/truck makers never made a consumer level cab over? There are loads of commercial vehicles so I assume the safety aspects have been addressed. Anyhow, I agree, that is for me the perfect configuration for an EV. Oh...and considering the sleeper aspect, I had a friend who was a Porche mechanic who put a 911 motor and trans in his bay van. We used to go to mountain bike races loaded up and the confusion of the big tire truck crowd when we'd pass them uphill on the freeway was priceless.

Richard, I truly love the enthusiasm you and Tim exhibit about these vehicles. Being legally blind and a guide dog handler I will never have the opportunity to drive and appreciate the driving experience of one of these beautiful cars. That said, I am a huge car nut and I worked with my father on serval classic cars. So thank you both for allowing to live vicariously through your channel. This is excellent work you have done with this dual cab, brilliant vehicle to convert. I love type2s, have owned 6 or 7 splits including a couple of 23 window sambas, its clever engineering considering it has exactly the same wheelbase as a beetle. One thing they did not excel at was 100kph in a cross wind... real white knuckle touring at that speed - if you got there. BTW - In Australia, this version of the type2 was available for next to nothing way back in the 70s, tradespeople didnt like having to lift gear that high to load the tray, and utes remained far more popular, so second hand they were cheap as chips.. a far cry from the insane costs of todays VW classic market.

I think they're already in production. If you watched the Munro video, the "blanked out" white delivery van is a Walmart unit. When you consider they have 3500+ Superstores in the US, each with who knows how many vans, plus 500 smaller stores, there must be well over 50,000 vehicles at a conservative estimate. Just like Rivian with Amazon , that's a great foundation. Not to mention Walmart had pledged to be all electric in the stores by I think 2025(?)

I looked it up, and i was disappointed with the design. Am I the only person who thinks "a box with some aerodynamic rounding" is a better design than "weird as hell star trek shuttle", or whatever else designers come up with? Form follows function, not the other way round.

I briefly had a '69 bus, then for 35 years a '71 pop top bus. So, yes, I absolutely have very good feelings about your practical pick up! Love the stealth use of original knobs, storage space. What I don't miss was fighting the rust, the clunky steering box and spoon in oatmeal stick shift. I enjoyed/abused mine on dirt roads in Baja, many years ago. It was not practical for me to have a 15 mpg vehicle, so it spent its time as a lockable storage unit in my carport , until some guy offered to buy it for 2x of what I though it was worth. Such good times in that bus. :( Can you make me a left hand steer model for 30K?

The only downside is it lacks all the safety features we have got used to. No airbags, crumple zones that don't involve your legs, head restraints on front seats. I am sure ABS would have been fitted as Richards hopefully upgraded the brakiing system. 400bhp + drum brakes wouldn't be fun. Hopefully the glass is safety or laminated at least. I would prefer range over extreme performance though. Great show by the way !

My first experience (and surprise) of electric power was an electric dirt bike and electric quad for my two sons. The acceleration on the quad especially was blistering and it hit 20/25mph with no effort at all. When I upgraded I got them 50cc petrol items, and was dissapointed, as they didn't perform anywhere near as well as the electric ones..!! Thought we were upping power and performance, but turned out not to be the case at all. Was an eye opener..!! Enjoy your videos and the content. Keep up the good work and look forward to what you have planned for the future....

I've been following EV's for the past 3 years, have reserved an Aptera (400 mile, 40kwh), and am a DIY e-bike builder. I also used to own a yellow/white1973 VW Transporter. With its 100kwh Tesla packs (200-250 mile range), and Tesla RWD 400hp motor, I MUST agree - this IS indeed the BEST EV in the world IMO. It is FUN, multi-use (commuting, hauling, camping, work, everything! One can spend a million $ on a new latest and greatest vehicle and still not have the FUN, the driving satisfaction and the sheer utility of this machine.

Really makes me wish I still had my old 62 VW European Touring style bus, the one with the curved back corner windows and the oval shaped windows above the rain channel. If I could have converted it the same way back in the late 70's early 80's when I owned it, would probably still be driving it today. Was a restoration project my dad and I did. Looked really nice when we were done. Was two tone, gloss black on the bottom and the top above the rain channel (Is that the right word?), and silver around the windows and dipping down the point in front following the curve. Had tubular steel bumpers made. Strait bar across the back and a "D shaped bumper on front with fog lights on it. Where the canvas tarp on top used to be we made a wooden frame and put in a smoked plexiglass top, so it had one HUGE sunroof. Tinted the side windows and had black headliner with grey padded side panels. Seats were black vinyl back and sides with grey cloth seats. Same for the benches. She was LOUD though. They hadn't really gotten the soundproofing and sound deadening materials we have now. She had a good engine in her. Our mechanic was actually a former VW specialist from Germany. He had her purring like a kitten, just a very LOUD kitten. Ended up selling her to a family that lived up near Astoria, Oregon in 1982 or 83. Never saw her again. Kept hoping I would spot her while watching Short Circuit, or Kindergarden Cop since they filmed them there. Never did spot her though. (sigh)😞

Great video. Here are some suggestions to improve the already brilliant green monster: 1) Increase the battery pack by utilising the space under the crew cab bench seating. 2) Make it a central driving position, with cameras instead of wing mirrors, retaining a passenger seat on either side of the driver. 3) 4x4 transmission to take advantage of the increased power and to lower the risk of tail slides when the flat-bed is not under load. 4) Design a rigid, bolt-on/ off hard-top canopy above the flat-bed to give as additional option to change the use of the vehicle, practicality wise and to complete the bullet-look. 5) Bigger wheels What about electrifying a double-cab Unimog. With 450hp and increased torque from a Tesla motor it would be a go anywhere vehicle.

I have watched this video 3 times, Magnificent VW Twin Cab, I have previously watched the Earlier Videos of This VW from a couple of years ago, (I have a Copy on Phone to show Petrol Heads), I also remember seeing one once with side boards removed & a Slide on Camper Top, Huge Fiberglass with a sloped "Aerodynamic" section over cabin, a disaster, fitted at a Caravan Park, the owner was whinging about CROSS WINDS, other Drivers being annoyed on Hills, and Fuel Consumption had increased, But a Smaller Slide On, or even a canopy, Level to top of Cabin sitting on that Deck, would make it a excellent get-away vehicle, with some Solar Panels on roof of Camper Section, but I would add a slide in/out Kitchen were rear seats are, See I do not own one & how inspired it makes me to build things, You are a Lucky Man..

You may have addressed this in previous videos, but I'm curious why you use the CCS plug. Back when they didn't have an electric motor, they were also fun to drive, with an empty bed they could almost jump around corners (almost without tipping over). The new ID. Buzz looks cool but we need to make a campaign to get WV to start a production of your electric minibus, maybe they can find the tooling to make it in some dusty warehouse somewhere in Brazil? When the head of VW gets a 5 min. test drive in yours, he is definitely convinced :)

Yeah, Richard, you make a strong argument! It’s hard to beat cab-forward trucks for utility. I had an ‘88 Toyota 4X4 pickup truck as my farm truck for years, but when I found an imported (Japan-USA) ‘90 Nissan 4X4 Vanette (cab-forward) w/ hydraulic dump bed it was love at first sight! It’s so maneuverable and compact yet has a big, flat 5’X8’ dump bed and 3/4 ton capacity. The thing that would make it even better would be electric power! As an EV it would have LOADS more slow speed torque allowing larger wheels for more traction and ground clearance. Damn, I wish I had the $ to pull that off. Someday!!

There’s no doubt about it, a rear wheel drive with a rear or mid engine vehicle is the best for electric conversion. A step further would be to have a different differential where the casting has a yoke so that the input shaft is parallel to the main axle with a smaller motor each side for balance and maybe even for improved efficiency would take a lot of stress out of the set up. I personally would settle for about 2/3 of the power if it meant an increase in range as I’m in Australia and we need greater range.

What a A1 refreshing video, an antithesis of what we typically get here in North America which are loaded full of salesmanship attitude obstructing the meager content of the videos. Please, don't change your style. Wonderful vehicle! Could you give me a range of cost I should be prepared to spend on the electric conversion only? And what weight increase should I expect. Thank you.

Thanks. Costs vary depending on the vehicle and customer requirements. Weight is generally the same as ICE with full tank of fuel but has much improved weight distribution. 👍😀

They really are very useful cars, they make the most of their footprint compared to cars of similar length. Had a kombi variant growing up, could haul anything-lumber, rock band gear, appliances, the Christmas tree, even an Optimist sailboat. Would be curious to see what you did to convert it-how you put the batteries in the midsection and altered the drivetrain.

Been loving the constant quality videos lately guys, but this one especially hit the spot given the setbacks I've been having on my own VW bus Tesla conversion. Reinforces why I'm doing it - although it's just a normal '73 bus (not DC) with a Tesla SDU and 75kWh battery it should still be very useful for many of the same reasons you mention, with the bonus of a back seat bed. Suggestion for future videos - perhaps more techy where you delve into how you control and tune your Tesla gear? Also the BMS and its user interface, CCS charging etc?

More tech stuff to come for definite. No Tesla tuning, just plug and play with the EV Controls T-2C, soooo much better than anything else on the market. 👌

@@ElectricClassicCars I learnt the hard way with a blown inverter using the opensourced controller, have changed to T-2C but it hasn't been smooth sailing yet. Had to send it back to EV controls for repair and waiting for its return. Look forward to more techy stuff, keep up the great work!

i've been wanting to make a electric beetle, but i know i wont be able to have it for another 7-10 years cause im 21, but i was wondering how much do you think i would need to spend on a conversion? I've done what i want in NFS just for an idea of what i want. But if theres custom interior(modern) with bodywork, great power like Tesla Plaid, with 150miles range and i live in canada not UK(yes i want right hand drive). I just want an idea to have a goal of how long ill need to save up, any idea how much it would cost? thanks for answering even if its approximative guess!

How can you say it's practical, when there is no mention about what it cost to convert with all of those expensive Tesla parts? I love it, and wish it were mine, but I doubt very much that it is a "practical" project for average wage earners. P.S. I have a 1970 Karmann Ghia coupe waiting for its electric conversion, as soon as I can find affordable components to make the project feasible.

Beautifully practical, very nice, the only suggestions, how easy would it be to make the front seat back fold down and put solar panels on top the cab to charge the vehicle batteries while camping, and is there a camper that fits the bay…and is this available in the U.S….

That is one cool motor Richard, and as you say ticks all of many boxes. The way the new car EV market is going, with expensive, over specified and very complicated cars being produced, the route of electrifying classics is going to grow significantly. The only problem is donor cars such as your bay and the like, and is the supply of recycled Tesla drive units infinite? Great video as always, and I note your command of world languages 😂😂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿😎
