I like the electric motor, uses less space, quiet. Back up generator, add more solar and wind generator. I like the aluminum hull, easy to repair, doesn’t absorb water over the life of the boat, no gel coat to scratch, can take the abuse and in the end can be recycled vs. Ending up in a dump or boat graveyard.

Nice to be invited to tour another boat and you didn't have to travel far from last weeks 😉😂 A nice boat but i noticed two things that made me think 🤔 the external life lines/rails were low more likely to trip you than save you ... The other thing was the helms were very far back and i feel thats not where you want to be in a cold following sea. 🧙♂️🇬🇧
@OddLifeCrafting9 ай бұрын
To be honest now that we are helping with the design of our boat we respect so much for other boats design. It's literally impossible to have everything, it's always a matter of compromisse. Like the helm for example if it is not far you will have a tiny cockpit or a tiny saloon. So you need to compromisse in something. If the boat was only meant to go to Antartica I would definitely chose a small cockpit with a helm more at the center, but if the boat wil spend some time in the tropics too I would go for the big cockpit. On Odd we had this problem, and for sure it was designed for the cold weather. Of course there is no right or wrong, there are compromises and decisions. 😅

@@OddLifeCrafting One helm on the bulkhead... one further aft on a swinging mount So you dont need two big wheel s blocking your transom loading and unloading and aft dingy mounts.. 🤔? In some places your expected to tie up stern first like the Med in others like Sweden etc they tie up bow first even to rocks. See Ran 2 sailing. Thinking aloud having seen many folks getting wet, bitten, cold tired and burned... 🧙♂️👍🏼🤞🏼 Remember Ventilation and insulation will help you anywhere. Play on kids..😎

Maybe it's just the perspective of someone who isn't a boat person, but the cockpit of this boat seems absolutely HUGE compared to Odd!! Is the beam that much larger or is it just a more judicious use of the space? Either way, I hope your new boat turns out exactly as you planned. At least that way you can sail it for a month before you start making changes! Thanks, again, for the visit.

I'm excited to see van build updates!!!! Have you guys considered a wind turbine generator as well for the new boat?
@cameronjones48109 ай бұрын
Duca, Will all the electricals on your boat be wired for native 120 volt or 240 volt appliances, equipment and personal items? Are you going to go for e drive with your boat? If so will you have a couple of generators to allow you to drive your propulsion motor at full output? How much capacity are you planning for your solar charging system? Can't wait to hear more about your actual boat!
@OddLifeCrafting9 ай бұрын
Good question!! Some answers we have some we don't yet. And some I'm pretty sure will change along the way hehehe. Let's wait and see. Solar is a easy one to answer. As much as we can fit. hehehehe At this point I would say at least 2kwatts possibly something close to 2.5kw or even 3kw. Propulsion we are not 100% sure yet due to $. The boat will be mainly 220v but we consider having a secondary inverter/charger at 110. At this point we are more focus on making sure the hull of the boat is as close as possible for our needs as we probably order the aluminum tomorrow and start the build by the end of February. That's where our focus is right now, trying to think every little detail of the hull. 😅
@cameronjones48108 ай бұрын
That's going to be super cool! I totally get what you're saying about concentrating on the hull right now. I'm an engineer as well, and this is a very complex project. At this point you're just making room in the hull and on deck for the electrical systems you think you're going to need, and you've really just roughed that idea out at this point. You'll fine-tune that idea later in the process, when the stage of the build finally forces you to fully define this stuff. If you didn't take this approach you would drive yourself totally crazy, too many variables right?! It is so totally cool that you guys get to build a boat from scratch! It is going to be such a huge amount of work, but you guys are younger than me and you will do fine with all the labor involved!😊

mast figuration :tabernacle ? . I wonder ,if ,for an alu and steel boat up to a certain size , a welded tabernacle would (almost ) provide the strength of a keel step mast ,without dripping problems along the mast .In addition ,having the tabernacle high and strong enough, to have the boom hanging from it ,with the mast lowered down onto the boom (and sail ) , would provide even more ease of lowering and raising the mast and provide more connection points between mast and tabernacle .I have never experienced the above configuration ,but it might be worthwhile to investigate ,especially for a new build in alu and longterm cruisers ,who might want to access river and lake systems with low bridges and might benefit from ease of access of the whole mast .

I’ve noticed that on a lot of sailboats the sail locker hatch is a Bomar style, glass hatch. Why is that? It would seem that a solid hatch would be more durable and would carry more weight.
@OddLifeCrafting9 ай бұрын
In this way I believe you can have a water tight hatch and light coming in at the same time. And also if water make into the lazaret it will make into the boat. In our new boat we won't have, but we will have a water tight bulkhead right where the companionway door is, so in case water get's to the lazaret it won't make to the main part of the boat. Hope it made sense my "confusing" explanation. hehehe

Moody's DS is better in every way including material choices. Deck Salons are perfect sail boats; you are very smart to build this.
