@TheModelGuy3 жыл бұрын
I can't see the new F-4 being any worse, but Tamiya seems to improve every kit they release. Their Zero was amazing and my favorite kit until I built this one. A Clunk would be cool but has no real appeal to anyone who's not Canadian. Too small of a demographic
@gerryparker13903 жыл бұрын
@@TheModelGuy You are right about the Clunk, but the Belgians flew them and there are areas in Germany and France where they were a familiar sight. Unfortunately, in the UK and the USA the Clunk is virtually unknown and those are two of the largest markets for kits.

I don't see them putting that effort into something that complex. Their Lancaster is still decent for how old it is, but I don't think their new level of engineering would meld with it. TAMIYA has already produced the definitive 1/48 P-47D kits (and a P-47M-1, no less!) in both "Razorback" and Bubble Top versions. Now it is high time that some earlier P-47s hit the market. These are, the shorter-nosed, "flat-Keeled" P-47B and the P-47C, now with the longer nose, but 4 less Engine Cooling Flaps than the -Ds, and once again, with the "flat Keel". Many USAAF Aces cut their combat teeth on P-47Cs. Moving ahead in time, we could use a much-improved kit of the P-47N in 1/48th scale. That ACADEMY-thing is getting pretty long in the teeth, if you ask me. Jumping to P-38s, TAMIYA NAILED IT with their F/G and their latest H. NOW we NEED a kit of the J/L- THIS is the one that modelers were anticipating. I personally like the F/G/H-models better, just because the form of these earlier P-38s, I think, are more pure P-38 and truer to Kelly Johnson's original concept of what the Lightning was supposed to be. Also, Photo-Recon and Pathfinder versions, please. And for purists, an original XP-38, a P-38D and E, and also the "castrated" British-cum-USAAF Trainer version, the Lockheed Model 322-B. Are you listening Mr. Tamiya? Not necessarily from TAMIYA, but possibly from the likes of DORA WINGS, how about a 1930s Lockheed Orion, the precursor to the Vega? Possibly from one of the Eastern European makers, what about an XP-67 Moonbat in 1/48th scale? What a wicked-looking airplane that XP-67 was! A PROPER 1/48 F-7F Tigercat and a better 1/48 F8F Bearcat-series might be nice. There are more airplanes buzzing around inside my brain, but the list is too lengthy. And PLEASE EDUARD, give us a rest from all of those Bf.109s. How about a Griffon-Engine Spitfire Mk.XII instead of yet ANOTHER '109..?

A note on the P-38 propeller rotation - all (US) P-38s had counter-rotating propellers, though the British (who gave the P-38 its name) did order them with both propellers rotating in the same direction, as well as less powerful engines without turbosuperchargers - performance was reportedly poor, and the British cancelled their order, which might have bankrupted Lockheed. The problem with the twin engines was that if one was lost on takeoff, the remaining engine could provide enough thrust to overcome the ability of the rudders to "keep the pointy end into the wind." Multi-engine training for fighter pilots was not very good, and the P-38 was by far the most sophisticated (and complicated) fighter aircraft in the inventory, and it took a lot of training and experience to allow the pilots to use the aircraft to its full potential.
@TheModelGuy3 жыл бұрын
One of the biggest problems is the Brits wanted commonality with the P-40 engine for easy maintenance so they stripped off the super chargers. Then bitched about lack of performance. I guess they redeemed themselves with the Mustang upgrade later on
@michaelwilliamson13923 жыл бұрын
@@TheModelGuy Yes, the replacement of the engines and superchargers really limited the high altitude performance- logistics in some cases trumps performance. To be fair, at the time the order was placed, fighting was taking place primarily at altitudes where the turbosuperchargers weren't really necessary - but operational altitudes increased rapidly as each side sought an advantage and engine performance increased, so by the time the aircraft were actually ready, they weren't suitable, even though they apparently DID meet the performance specifications in the contract. Supercharger production was pretty limited at the time, so including them might have ended up delaying production even further, and so may have also played a role in the decision to forego them.
