I still remember walking into Target as a kid and seeing this on the PlayStation 2 kiosk, I watched a guy who worked the electronics department try to fumble his way through the arcade mode. Considering I already had experience with federation versus zeon, I picked up the controller after he was done and set one of the highest scores that stayed for months. Boy do I miss the days where you can walk into a Target and there was just a wall full of Gundam action figures. 😌

I grew up with Zeon vs Federation as a teenager and it is what got me into watching Gundam series. This year I've been playing Gundam vs Zeta Gundam on my phone with a telescopic controller and I've almost finished the UC mode, which is quite a slog to get through due to the sheer amount of (repetitive) missions. That said, the game works surprisingly well as a mobile game considering how short each mission is. This series has its roots in arcade multiplayer which I think explains some of its shortcomings that you mentioned in your video. I've had to retry some of the hard missions a few times, but you easily accumulate tons of points to max out upgrades which make these fights much easier. It would be nice if more people were playing this game online as there is a custom server for it nowadays, especially if someone could rebalance the stats of the less competitive mobile suits.

Gundam Vs. Zeta Gundam is such an incredible game. I loved it as a kid, even if I had never seen Zeta Gundam and didn't understand the story. What impressed me the most when I replayed the game as an adult is the wonderful animation used for all the mobile suits. The Zaku is my favorite, clunky and slow like an early MS would be. It looks so menacing as it rambles along with the heathawk drawn and ready to cut down some GMs. Overall the melee animations look really good too. I love that the Zaku I is restricted to hand to hand combat, the punches and kicks it delivers all feel so satisfying. You can really tell that this is a Capcom game.

Capcom went all out on Gundam vs Zeta Gundam, I remember the original MSG: Federation vs Zeon and DX versions on Dreamcast as just straight up ports from the arcade version. There's so much value in this game that I find it hard to believe Hori didn't release a game specific arcade stick for it lol. All Gundam VS games have a "communications" buttons, if you're playing solo, it tells the AI partner how to play (aggressive, evade, concentrate on your target, concentrate on off target or default), if you're playing the arcade version with a friend/partner, the communications button will send status updates over to your partner every time your press it. Zeta Gunadm was actually the third arcade game I got into competitively in the local arcade scene with my sparring partner in 3S and CvS2. The most cheese team are two Hi-Zacks with the missile pods, they low costing MS and their tactic is easy; stunlock targets with machine gun, confirm stunlock and use missile pods for guaranteed damage, rinse and repeat lol. I actually prefer series specific VS games because there's much more variety in MS selection, the later VS games like Extreme, Full Boost and Maxiboost are all Gundam heavy with no hardly any grunt MS to choose and not much mono-eyes. Gundam Seed Rengou vs ZAFT is when the gameplay mechanic was probably perfected/super fine tuned as you can use your boost meter to block if you had a shield, melee combat flowed better and movement/mobile was made better.

@@JarboeGaming The biggest problem with Fed Vs Zeon is that it feels a little too much like an arcade game in terms of features, which to be fair, it was an arcade game first. But other than the arcade mode, all it had was vs. and a tacked on generic campaign that gets brutally hard by the end (which I loved, but was also borderline insane on the last mission when you have to shoot down amuro or char). Gundam Vs. Zeta Gundam took the formula, made it run better, and focused it on the story mode to be the ultimate Gundam video game to play the show. If it had cutscenes to explain the story of the shows, it would be the best Gundam game of all time (it still arguably is, but it's a much closer fight with some of the newer Gundam vs. games and the Japanese exclusive one year war game on PS2)

I want to SEE the how and why Amuro joins the AEUG early (Being one of it's founding members even!) in the alternate scenario, Kamille in the Titans in ways outside of the gameplay, show us the attack that got his parents killed and his bonds with folk who, in the main and other timelines, would be his mortal enemies. My favorite Gundam game is on the PSP. Gundam Battle Universe. Now it does not have the high quality gameplay of the Gundam vs Gundam series which is best with(or atleast the best console release) with Gundam Extreme Vs Maxiboost on. When it comes to the storyline, you can start at any of the timelines. So if you choose 0079 you'll be able to start as a Federation pilot with a GM or a Zeon pilot with a Zaku 2. 0079 includes missions 08th MS team. If you choose 0083, you start with either a federation pilot in a GM Custom or Delaz pilot with, some form of Gelgoog I don't remember which. 0087 you can start as either AEUG, Titans, or Axis and so on. If you start as a Federation pilot on 0079, once you get to 0083 you can swap allegiances and go to the Delaz fleet. So all the mobile suits you acquire on 0079 will stay with you and you'll have 0079 federation suits, 0083 zeon suits, and then whatever you move over to in 0087, 0088, 0093, and then the extra missions that do other UC series. There are more than 200 mobile suits and early on, movement does feel heavier, so it feels a bit closer to a Gundam more bound in realism. As you complete missions you upgrade your mobile suits in all statistics of your choice. Aiming, weapon shot speed, etc to each weapon indivudally, but then mobile suit movement speed, boosters, HP, etc. There is both land and space combat and it feels really good in both. There are a lot of missions that follow the storyline with some dialogue in the missions but much like the Federation vs Zeon or Gundam vs Zeta Gundam, aside from the dialogue and the mobile suits that you combat against, there's no storyline outside of combat so you do have to know the story of Gundam for this to really follow it. It's an amazing game if you don't like Gundam but it is an absolutely must own if you're a fan of Gundam, especially UC. It's the best gameplay the Gundam series has had except for two. Gundam vs Gundam/Gundam Extreme vs series has the best the series has ever had when it comes to ground combat. Battle Operations 2 has the best ground and space combat when it comes to any Gundam game bound in realism, for a free to play game it's absolutely amazing when it comes to combat but I don't like the rock, paper, scissors mobile suit requirement, doesn't matter how good you are when one suit always beats another.

zero-G is kinda realistic.. without pressing your boost, you rotate around your center. your hitbox is dependent on the orientation, and your missiles have a parabolic arc... allowing you to aim from behind debris. you can actually command your ally to adopt a combat stance, its Normal, Close range, long range, assist or evade. Normal is they do their own thing. close range they use melee most of time. Long range is basically sniping. assist is they support fire on whomever you have targeted, evade is they stay away from combat only taking pot shots at the enemy. as for the recover mechanic, its not where you got hit... there's a mechanic for most mobile suits i set the bar to short but fast fill to keep triggering the recover boost. lets say Mk2, (i might have remembered this in reverse) first you lose your head, dropping your accuracy and losing your vulcans. then you lose your left arm, unable to reload your primary weapon.. leaving you with only a beam saber. i cant remember the specific of the others i think zeta is head or grenade launcher based on the main weapon then waverider parts reducing your MA mode speed and thrust gauge. Rx78 is head then left arm, mimicking the final battle of A baoa qu. Gms also the same. the only units immune to the loss of parts is Big Zam/elmeth.. as in you dont see any actual loss of parts. i did play AEUG vs TItans in the arcades. one guy kept challenging me and my friend... he used the zeta, i was a Mk2 user, my friend was hambrabi or ashimar main. being cheaper units, we managed to keep him from winning. final round, we decided to end his fun. we picked space and we went with twin balls... balls are very cheap... we could afford to die 5 times total. he only needed to die twice. balls also can snipe... press and hold down the target change button. balls reload very fast. so we kept dodging and sniping him. we finished it off with the manipulator attack

also I think the issue of friendly fire...it's kinda needed for some of the scenarios...especially the ones that require friendlies dying to unlock certain paths...in fact to unlock the Char starts Char's Counterattack VERY early scenario, you need to get to the right stage (after MAJORITY of the things are unlocked) then you need to win the stage but AFTER Lalah dies on Char's side and Sayla dies on Amuro's side and if I recall Sayla is in the Core fighter (or was that the Core tank? Im not too sure now lol) and she's REALLY tough to kill if you leave Char to do it for you, you almost need to INTENTIONALLY go out of your way to friendly fire kill her if you ever want to unlock that line of scenarios...but yeah as bad as friendly fire is, its a necessary evil for guiding and unlocking scenarios

Loved this game growing up and love how much of the original music and even the same actors were used to voice the lines from the anime. This game is ironically what made me want to watch Zeta Gundam and explore the UC Timeline as a whole. P.S. If you like Z Gundam’s soundtrack it looks like it’s on iTunes at the moment.

Honestly, it would be sweet to get a game similar to this in PS4/PS5 that includes more stories (for example, events of GBO2: Code Fairy) and even different eras.

I've always considered this to be the best Gundam game. I haven't played the full Universal Century mode, but I keep coming back to the survival mode to see how good of a score I could get.

I rather enjoyed the hell out of this game, and was rather bummed out later when I sold it while I was younger....I mean I was in my early 20's when this came out and I got it because Federation VS Zeon was to me an amazing game. Nothing better than setting yourself up as a Ball going against Char Gelgoogs with the goal not to die ONCE. The only real gripe I had about this is if you had a transforming mobile suit you kind of just flew around like a moth, never really at a straight line or a planned course, you sorta just go zoom one way zoom another way and then timed out and you transform back to MS mode.

This era was the peak of Gundam games. I know the versus and breaker games are popular still today. But they're way too arcadey for my tastes. This versus game is arcadey, but still manages to preserve the feel of Gundam. And really understands the history as evident by the ability to play alternate timelines with characters who originally died. I just wish they hadn't shutdown the studio that worked on Zeonic Front. It was the last 'thinking' Gundam game. Where tactics actually mattered. Combine Zeonic Front's tactics system with a good combat system. And we'd have some amazing Gundam.

I feel like the situation is different from Dragon Ball in that the Gundam Vs series never stopped, and unlike Tenkaichi got a lot more in depth with it's mechanics to the point where later games MBON and X Boost have dedicated competitive scenes. MBON has even had side tournaments at EVO and other major fighting game events, even though arena fighters normally aren't viewed as deep or competitive games. MBON is the series favorite and likely has more waaaay fans the Gundam Vs Zeta Gunddam because of how big and dedicated the competitive scene is and how it was and still is the only easily accessible game in the series atm in the West. But I definitely think you're onto something in that Gundam Vs Zeta Gundam provides something later games don't. Later VS games like MBON and XBoost games focus on more widely covering various Gundam shows, with very limited representatives for each show. But because of that what if format for the single player mode and the more focused roster, it's still a treat for UC nerds. It's definitely why I occasionally find myself returning to it after all these years even if I could be playing XBoost instead.

If there’s one thing that really annoys me about Gundam games is that there is yet to be a new one that is more story driven. I would love to experience either Gundam retold through a game or an original story. Guess I’ll check out some of the old ones like this one, even if it’s not much there either

one of the most fun imo is versus mode with all units set as AI and using Gyan in space or using space fighters and watch them trying very hard to hit their opponents lmao

This game is probably the best U.C package. I wish it would have gone into Star Dust Memory, 8th MS Team and Chars Counter Attack with its story and mechs but overall its almost the perfect U.C game.

exvs gamese are fast but you need like a fuckton of button presses to move in a direction the correct way like, hold direction, press boost two times, release boost, press boost again to go up, release direction while you go up, release boost then hold direction again while descending. this only to move in a direction with a good boost management. They are incredibly clunky, if you count also things like charge partitioning, stepboost etc

I honestly was never the hugest fan of this or Federation vs. Zeon. The arcady feel never sat right with me. I much prefer Encounters in Space and Journey to Jaborou, clunk and all. The space fighting felt way worse here. Nevertheless it was the first time as far as i know western fans could play non One Year War stories. And that Zeta music/story, chefs kiss.
@JarboeGaming11 ай бұрын
The 0 G combat in Encounters in Space definitely feels leaps and bounds better, I wasn't a huge fan of it here, but it was "passable" I'd say.

I actually prefer Federation vs Zeon over Gundam vs Zeta Gundam. The reason for this is because how the campaign mode worked. Instead of playing through each mission that each character played through, you played as your own random character starting with a small amount of mobile suits. As you complete missions these mobile suits retain their damage and if you play on hard mode this damage is not recovered. You choose which missions you'll play throughout the one year war going from 99 to maybe 109 missions at most depending on which you attempt or avoid. Even though I like GvZG because of how much more content, I like the progression of this one more. However, this isn't my favorite Gundam game, I'll be making a second post.

realistic Gundam graphic with Unreal Engine 5 would be much better. As much as we like to nostalgia with 2000s graphic, time moves on and they need to catch up or they'll lose competition with other games. Would be even better if they also make full motion VR Gundam cockpit simulator, just like there are full motion racing simulator and full motion flight simulator.
