As a retired cop with 31 yrs, the only suggestion I would add would be to add a pistol on ur side whenever searching with a shotgun. Then, if during the search, there’s ever a struggle over the shotgun, u can disengage and immediately revert to the pistol.

THIS! When I take carbine training we always train with a side arm and work transitions. My edc handgun rarely leaves my body so I have a set up where I can quickly and easily holster my side arm and get my rifle sling on. Dry practice is KEY (and free lol) I started running drills on opening and accessing my safe in total darkeness before my first gun was even in my possession then moved on to doing the same with holstering the handgun and grabbing rifle or shotgun quickly, quietly and efficiently. These can all be life savers once locked into muscle memory. One last thing is how you walk and move your feet! Step/ roll softly heel to toe and NEVER EVER EVER cross one leg over the other traveling sideways! A simple side to side step without your ankles/feet crossing will prevent any chance of getting tangled up, making more noise than necessary and God forbid tripping and giving away your location and tactical advantage. Train smart and stay safe guys!

One thing you should consider is a sling. Very important, unless you want to place your shotgun on the ground. Any two point sling, where you can even do an "African carry" or an "American carry" if you have to. Also, buy a case of 00 buck and look at your pattern at 10, 15, 20 and 25 yards. You don't want any fliers, take pictures if you have to. 00 buck can be inconsistent and vary by lot. So if you buy a case, then they will likely be the same. This is what I was told to me by Louis Awerbuck (RIP), who was once the chief rangemaster of the Gunsite Academy.

Yeah I like to think of defensive weapons as disposable. Glocks and M&Ps and mossberg 500s or mavericks. Whatever you use is going to be taken as evidence anyway maybe for good. I'd hate for someone that doesn't have much money to think you need to save up 2 grand for a single weapon. I can't imagine losing a 3 thousand dollar custom 1911 because some crack head broke in through my window. Let the plastic guns do the work and leave the toys in the safe.

The first shotgun I fired was the Benelli M4 (M1014 USMC). I eventually bought 1 during the COVID era for 2200. Overall the money I spent adds up to over 3 grand. I eventually sold that shotgun and later bought an A300 Ultima Patrol. Out of the box that weapon is everything you want for a combat/home defense shotgun and for only 1 grand. I added a surefire x300u and an aimpoint acro p2. Still less money than a base Benelli M4. I know some are going to say that the 1301 and M4 have a better operating system. They’re absolutely right but we all know that most likely we won’t be able to outrun the gun. Save your money and get a better package deal. Or not and go spend the money for the Benelli M4 name and then stick it in the safe cause that gun ain’t going get used like it should.

i paid a pretty penny for my custom 1301 and i dont intend to baby it at all. asides good cleaning and the such but i like my firearms to be clean and ready to rock. even with it in bronze i am not worried about scratches or anything else if it needs used it gets used no tears here. got it for a purpose while keeping my mind open to more possibilities it might serve in. i like things to have multiple purposes so it can meet more ends.

It's weird when someone puts down such a nice piece of art to say they spent too much, so they sold it for less, then bought a cheaper gun. If you bought a gun to keep in a cabinet, you bought a trophy. I bought the M4 for multiple reasons. I don't like glocks and think there are multiple flaws for why people like them. I don't like them, but if someone else does better shooting than i do, i can't explain to them why they shouldn't like them. To each they're own. - Semper Fi

Sorry, no. P/P doesnt change any recoil, it just adds tension to the shooting system. It is a flashy range technique but in the real world you will be doing other stuff with your 'push' hand, like opening doors, activating lights, holding a phone etc. End of the day, action / reaction, recoil still travels into your body and is absorbed by mass and feet to floor traction P/P just makes you tired faster.

Nice. I did research and came up with nearly three same plan as you. I've got a Beretta 1301 Tactical. Extended tube with full length Briley m-lok handguard with a 2000 lumen light directly underneath on a quick release mount and a remote switch on the right side with the cable managed. Vickers sling mounted to the buttstock and two QD Mount locations on the left side of the handguard. Two Briley stage savers on the right side for specialty rounds and a Holosun HE510C-GR Open Reflex Sight. I'm working on customizing a velcro shell strip that will hold 6-8 rounds which can be easily swapped out when emptied. The most important thing of all is practicing on loading a beast like the Beretta 1301T or the Benelli M4 because they will let loose rounds quicker than you realize. Lol

The AnS shotgun billet trigger housing is a nice upgrade. It is relieved to allow better loading access. Classic Firearms is importing Turkish Walnut field stock and handguards for $75 shipped. I just installed a set and I'm very pleased. One note is the bolt they supply has the wrong thread pitch to secure the stock to the recoil spring housing. The correct bolt size is M8-1x60mm and is available at most hardware stores.

In a hostage situation you have total control with the 12ga. They can't move without guaranteed getting killed and the police are coming. So the only way to escape alive is to release the hostage and leave immediately to work the police response time window. Unless there are 2 or more left, in which case you just disable one then go back to working on the one with the hostage. Gotta tell them "leave the hostage now and I won't pursue. If you don't i guarantee you are NOT leaving alive."

I prefer a saiga-12. With an added gas port, properly tuned autoplug, booster puck, and reprofiled and polished fcg, bolt, and carrier, she's flawless even with low brass and uber-reliable. Did it take a lot to get it there? Sure, but it has been an absolute pleasure to shoot since 2010 and I shoulder it every chance i get!

how do the loaded mags hold up? i have been hearing and reading that they start to distort the shells after awhile due to the high spring tension needed to properly and reliably feed the round?

@clintkees6158 I only use AGP, which has a steel lip that hold the rim of the round. No distortion, they're always loaded. When I get to the range, I unload the buckshot and load up low brass. When I leave, I load buckshot and slugs back in.

No offence but most of us ain't got $1800 bucks for a shotgun. Most average working Americans have $200 dollar shotguns and live in a real Joe Bribens economy. Colion is cool Much respect. But he needs to come down a few flights to everyday America. And feature lower priced guns and how they can prove worthy of self defense against home invasion. We are working class folks😂

Finally placed an order for one of these. Snagged one of the limited edition midnight bronze versions. Imma have to get the 7 round tube cerakote-ed and find some way to keep the colors right on the stock portion while converting it to a collapsible. Im torn on optic choice though. I might paint an aimpoint t2 and mount it on the scalerworks low profile mount or just get the Eotech ESP3 in bronze and call it a day.

This will likely piss a few people off, but to me and related to my former profession in Special Forces shotguns have 2 purposes, shooting birds (clay or living) and breaching. Other than that I’ll pass, there are too many other options that are better than a shotgun for self defense.

For the most part I feel that way. But shotguns are also good for a scare-tactic when someone hears a shotgun getting loaded vs a pistol some reconsider violence as an option you also then have the rare situation that a shotgun will do more in a faster time such as the slam fire shotgun method but it is pretty rare.

The main argument that I see for 5.56 over 12 gauge is that 5.56 hollow points will fragment in drywall, whereas any 12 gauge load will overpenetrate multiple internal walls and remain lethal. Not to mention the extremely limited capacity with shotguns. Using shotguns for home defense is outdated, unless you have absolutely no other family in your house to worry about.

Unpopular opinion: you don’t need a red dot on a shotgun unless you’re firing slugs and even then, I personally don’t use slugs to defend my home unless I want to shoot a straight hole through the neighbors door

However, if I use some buckshot in the house and the intruder start running and then a guy from 25 yards away, in the getaway car starts shooting at me, with my Beretta, 1301 I can load a slug in seconds and engage a 25 yard target

I had home defense in mind. If the intruder is running away, I’m not pursuing them at all. Especially not with a close range weapon. I’m staying in my house and not engaging in a Hollywood gun fight.

@@justinkpryde thing is is, shotgun is not just a close range weapon. I would advise doing some research and learning and even possible training. You may be surprised. Also, in case it seemed like I was suggesting to chase an intruder, I most certainly was not. I gave an example of someone 25 yards away in a getaway car firing into my house. Someone firing into my house is a threat that would require being dealt with.
@justinkpryde

@@jymesbynd4931it’s impossible to win the “anything can happen argument” and at some point the idea that I should be training to throw flash bangs and practice quad loading so I can engage the attack helicopter that’s coming to rob my house is going to come up and I’m going to be considered wrong for not training for that. Point is, I don’t think it’s smart to spend 500 dollars on a precision device for a firearms that isn’t designed for precision shots. When someone invades my home, my priority is bunkering my family in a secure corner and keeping the fight within the walls that I’m familiar with. If someone in a getaway car is blasting at my house then I can grab another weapon but at the same time I’m not a mob boss so the idea of someone unloading at my front door is unlikely but I guess I need to do research on how to combat that.

I use a SPAS-12 for home defense myself. lol I did find that the folding stock interfered with my ability to mount any type of side saddle, so I keep a bandolier in the same place I store my shotgun. Plus, the pump mode makes it very easy to ghost load even when stored "cruiser ready", so I can shove 10 shells into the gun in total, which should be more than plenty to deal with any situation. The top folding stock also interferes with a red dot, but I found that a laser sight through the massive ghost rings on the SPAS-12 almost works like a pseudo red dot indoors. It's not useable that way outside, but indoors where the light isn't all that blinding even in summer and the walls in my house mean I can't lose track of the dot due to distance, it does work surprisingly well for a threat focused, "put dot on target and pull trigger" shooting style that red dots bring. And because it is a laser, I can also shoot from the hip with the stock folded if I'm in really tight spaces. Though that's only with the iconic folding stock. If I had the fixed stock, I could easily put a velcro pad on the side to stick shotgun cards and there are even scope mounts existing for the SPAS-12 as well. Otherwise, got a sling, got a large capacity (8 shells in the tube vs. 7), got a folding stock for maneuvering in close quarters if need be, got a light alongside my laser, got a sling, and it's reliable with the ammo I'm running through it. Even has a full heat shield which lets me C-clamp grip it in a way most shotguns can't do. It's actually really close to M-lok so I'm actually wondering if I could modify some M-lok accessories to make it work on the heat shield. Maybe I could get a heat shield mounted red dot very forward mounted. I know GIGN mounted lasers on the heat shield before.

Nice setup for Colion. I dont use weapon lights because 4 legged predators and artifical light laws. Its a ticket or 3 here running a weapon light in the field. And I use my shotgun for livestock defense. So animals are present. And has been used to defend livestock. The screwed up thing is most states have artifical or weapon light laws in firearm or hunting laws.

I own a lot of shotguns - including the Benelli M4 - but it is NOT my go to shotgun for home defense.. simply because it is kind of long and affects maneuverability in close quarters or confined spaces. I am sure you can become very proficient with the Benelli M4 with some tactical shotgun training.. but in my opinion.. I still would not want to go around dark corners with a long ass barrel sticking out in front of me.. leave that shit for John Wick. The BenellI M4 definitely has it's purpose and uses.. it is a battle tested shotgun.. but it is just not my first choice should I have unexpected intruders in my home at 3am. I prefer an SBS or a 12ga Bullpup like a Tavor TS-12 or even a Remington V3 Tac-13 with birds head grip - it is nice and compact.. semi auto.. and perfect for CQC or home defense. If you cannot stop or kill something with 5 shots or less out of a 12ga shotgun.. then you are probably dead anyways.

The best setup is the one you’re comfortable with, able to maneuver and shoot accurately in crammed in areas to areas with lots of space so everyone is going to have their own different setup up my setup is perfect for me but bad for a lot of others my shotgun is an AR-12 it’s just like an AR-15 but chambered in 12 gauge and charging handle on side because I can maneuver with it in all areas, comfortable with it and most importantly I can shoot accurately with speed and precision even in tight spaces

As long as you have a separate flashlight to point with the barrel down. It's inexcusable to point the weapon at anyone other than a bad guy , even if you don't have kids. A shot gun is for a known intruder and self defense. A handgun is for a inspection still secondary light muzzle down. 👍
