We wanted to give it a try for ourselves - and on top of that, we have a huge trash problem in Kansas City, so we plan to clean up the area a bit and make some money while we do.

You can tell this guy has no clue what he’s doing. For starters, if you want to be successful, the I suggest atleast a 3’ side dump. 2’ is to shallow and you won’t be able to put much on it. I’m sure you’ll get customers who will use it, but they likely won’t be repeat customers when they see how little they were able to put in a 2’ tall bin. There’s laws and rules at dump yards about waste stacked higher than the side rails of the dump. Some instances, yards requires all loads to be tarped. Hard to tarp a load when everything you put in it will hang out higher than the side rails. If you go 2’ side, make sure it has stake pockets so you can build 2’ extension walls.

Idiots think this is a side hustle, lmfao. A side hustle doesn’t cost you $6k or more a year for insurance. Unless you’ve already got a business, and renting these under your business that’s already insured, then it’s not a hustle. Most people don’t know when you rent these, you need commercial insurance, dot number, some dumps, you need a permit to dump with a trailer over 10k gvwr, and so much more. Some instances, you need a CDL. Good luck though, that trailer will be back for sale in no time.

I bought a 7x14 dumpster trailer form Kaufman paid $8250 last year in cash for it. Business is slow as tuck right now. Use a hitch lock and a gps for it.

I'm about to do the same thing. I was going to buy a 1 ton and gooseneck last year, but diesel and truck prices got outrageous. I just paid my 1/2 ton off so I'm going to get a bumper pull for now and see how things go with it.

On securing your trailer, a hitch lock is a good balance of deterrence and convenience. Most hitch locks use a cheap wafer core, takes 30 seconds for a low skill attacker to take off. When buying a cellular/GPS locator, expect to pay $250 for the equipment and $15/mo for the service. Make sure it has plenty of tamper detection, has a battery and a 12V power IN (tie it into the running lights).
