What do you think of JVC's D Series TVs? Thanks for checking out this review. There is a lot of additional information in the description of the video.

They look great, especially if you prefer the shadowmask look to the aperature grill of the trinnys

I have a Thomson SP Black Pearl 33", which is identical to this model of the D-Series, exact same bubble tube, and the exact same high fidelity line count, the only difference really is it comes with RGB scart instead of component, but that's not really anything important, they both produce the same IQ, it also has a built-in amp for centre and 2 rear speakers, which is nice, sounds amazing with a MiSTer and high-quality audio DAC, Monkey Island games MIDI audio in quad stereo is sublime, and you can use the centre speaker to enhance and isolate speech dialogue and sound effects along with the subwoofer, I also have a DSP that has various EQ settings like a low-pass filter, extra reverb, chorus, room size correction, bass/treble/alto, et cetera.

They vary, a lot. Inconsistent is the word. Some are great, others just ok. I consider Toshiba to be king for shadow masks.

I had this exact model, AV-32D303, that I got for free from someone nearby back in 2022. Absolutely amazing TV, but after using it for a few minutes, I realized that mine had a thin scratch right near the middle of the screen and it was deep enough to distort colors so there was no way I could use it. Ended up taking it to a recycling center, glad to see this one getting a full service.

Wonderful set. Defeating the red push in the service menu makes it that much better, too.

I have a similar JVC 36 inch display sitting behind me right now! It's a wonderful TV, and the component input offers a great image without being too sharp, so the blending is very nice.

I had a D Series 27" model, great TV wish I had it back. But I kept my 27" I'art with PIP (lol) and honestly I always liked the I'art a bit more. Still works well though it's over 20 years old now.

I really love my JVC-D set. I have both a 32'' and a 27''. The 27'' takes the same pixel quality but is "compressing" it so it appears a bit more "refined" if I can say so but the 32'' is just plain feast for the eyes, especially when sitting only a couple of feet away, the scanlines are gorgeous. I think the decomb filter on composite signal is also excellent... even though I'm using component nowdays 😅And yes the speakers on the 32'' are quite good, I totally agree. And yes it's heavy... it's heavy. I cannot take anything heavier than that 😅

D-Series are second only to Trinitrons and other exotic tube types (beam-index etc). One of the best consumer shadow mask sets ever made.

I own a 36" D Series, got it for free from a lady cleaning out her storage unit. Only thing wrong with it is a dent on the front bezel, but everything else about it is amazing.

@ 14:45 when you're talking about the sound system in the TV..JVC definitely does have great sounding televisions, similar to Sony trinitron TV's of the same era! So i agree! I currently have a JVC HD56G787 and it gets louder and THUMPS bass harder than some htib systems i have heard, and I'm not even exaggerating! Those brands definitely knew how to make home audio listening a great experience given the materials they used for the price point!

sweet Expos hat! That D series looks great, even over s-video. I think JVC has a better s-video conversion than Sony; I have a small JVC pro monitor and the s-video on it looks so much better than the s-video on a Sony!

Picked one up last year for like $100, it's great. D305 variant, 34" I believe. Was extremely difficult to carry up 3 flights of stairs by myself.
@brandonkick9 ай бұрын
I'd say it was probably the 32. I own a few 32's and two 36's. Carried them all myself. But the 36's didn't go up or down any stairs (and won't with just me doing the lugging). I wouldn't mess with the man who can carry a 36" D-Series up a few flights of stairs. It's not like it's THAT much heavier, but the added bulk / size makes it much harder to carry. Esp for me, I'm 5'9 on a good day and my arms aren't all that long.
@SeveredLegs9 ай бұрын
@@brandonkick yeah I'm about your size too and I'm pretty sure it's a 32 in. Let me measure it now that I have a tape measure handy. Yes it is 32 in. 115 lb I know that. It was no joke.

I own 5 of these.... Three 32" D-Series (two silver, one black) and two of the 36" sets (one black, one silver). The 32's are all more or less "perfect". All work just fine. I have the matching stand for one of my silver ones. My silver 36 is my go to for retro gaming. Nice bright tube. Geometry isn't great, but not horrible. I can tweak it little bits here and there in the service menu console depending and it's something you don't really notice much. The black 36 unfortunately is pretty bad shape. Very rough tube, heavy scratches on the front and the tubes very dim. The poor old girl probably has many thousands of hours on her now. They are wonderful sets though. Solid picture quality. I too love that big ole bubble mask on the 36" sets. Nice 90's look to it cosmetically. Plenty of inputs. Component is a nice touch for those not looking to wonder down the RGB modding rabbit hole (SCART cables... am I right?) And they were really common, so it's not terribly hard to find them and the larger one's especially tend to be cheap / free (both my 36" sets were free because they couldn't physically move them). I'd love to find a 27". They don't come up as often because well.... they don't share the "too heavy to move, takes up too much space" problem of it's bigger brothers.

I would say maybe? But not because i want to be contrarian but because i also think the I Art series also deserve so consideration for JVCs best. That said, the D series is a top tier crt worthy of all the praise it gets.

Is this copper wiring by the anode cap? Then takes it off. Was that after you discharged it or was there no danger doing that? I sold my 27" D series and picked up a 32" AV-32###. I prefer the look without the side speakers.

I would love to have a d series and have been looking for one in my area for awhile now. I have 2 of the af series toshiba crts a 20 and a 14 and i think they both look great with the component video hooked up. Crts are getting more scarce everywhere and unfortunately i have to take whats available so i guess ill just keep enjoying my toshiba sets. I hope these jvs videos dont make theses jvc sets even more rare because they are getting hard to find.

Had a 32 and 19 inch D Series but sold them both as anything above 64 looked kinda bleh on it. I ended up swapping them for a couple of i'arts and while I miss the round tube versus the flat I like the picture way more and games look great with everything up to the og Xbox.

I used to have one of these until I got a really nice, similarly size Panasonic CRT. I gave the JVC to my buddy who also loves playing retro games. However, about a month ago, I was driving by his place and saw that someone left out a CRT out front and thought to myself "OH MAN, FREE CRT! And that looks... very... familiar..." Sure enough, upon driving up to it it was the exact same D-SERIES TV I had given to him. I would have gladly taken it from him if he had asked, but he never messaged me about it, he never once has mentioned it since, and it's my single greatest loss of CRT. However, I can't be really mad. I did gift it to him, and I still have a pretty great CRT TV to use for my old games. But a loss is a loss.
