We thought a 7 mile walk along the River Itchen from Eastleigh to Winchester would be a great idea on a Tuesday evening! What do you think?

That pub in Shawford was where Victor Meldrew met his demise in One foot in the grave and after the episode was shown on TV, there were flowers left outside Shawford railway station.

You were walking up towpaths. Your route was along the northern section of the Itchen Navigation, which ran from Northam to Winchester. I was linked, at Northam, with the Southampton Salisbury Canal, which was never completed. There's quite a lot of information on both waterways in the main libraries of Southampton and Winchester.
@allangoodger969

Its interesting to see what you call a river and what us Aussies call a river. Here on the east coast the Itchen would be considered a creek. I believe you said that the Itchen River is reasonably long 45km. Whereas the Shoalhaven river (where I have a small camping property of 150 ac) is considered a small river with a length of 327km. Then you look at the Darling River with a length of 1,472km and a catchment 699,000km2. The whole of the UK is only 248,532 km2.

To be fair, I dont think its just us that call it a river... I think geography call it a river :D

Actually Rob, look up the definition of River. A river is "a LARGE natural stream...". So yeah, we'd never call that a river here is Aus, because its not a river. Its a tiny creek.
@allangoodger969
@allangoodger969 2 жыл бұрын
@@morkusmorkus6040 Yep its all relative. To be fair as said its the establishment who has determined it a "river". On the other side of the coin what would Rob call the Todd or the Fink river.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I've walked this route many times and it's a lovely walk, but i'm a bit confused about the bit where the cows were in the field. Did you turn left at Compton lock and cross over the river ? That archway and style through the brick wall into the meadows looks like the one from the Poultry farm ( as shown on the os map ). I'm wondering why you didn't just keep following the main path alongside the river ? keeping the river on your left side 🤔🤷‍♂

I enjoy getting to see a little bit of Hampshire, as that is where my husband is from, so thanks for sharing it. You could do another blog about St Catherine’s Hill as that looks very interesting. Tasmania has a connection with the River Itchen, back in 1864 trout (and salmon) eggs were collected from the river and sent to Tasmania to be hatched and bred so the Brits could have fish they were familiar with, the trout flourished in the rivers down here ever since.

How is little one Leanna’s eye surgery fund going?
@CharlieandRob
@CharlieandRob 2 жыл бұрын
So we raised £1,800. She was scheduled to have an operation just before Christmas 2021. They put her under and tested the 'bad eye'. They found no movement of the retina and therefore decided not to operate. That cost £400 just for putting her under and testing. They didnt want to operate on the 'good eye' that has a cataract forming as they didnt want anything to go wrong and leaving her completely blind. So we have to take her back every 6 months to check up on her 'good eye'. So the money raised is in a bank account and will be used for the check ups and the treatment when it is time to have it done!
