Welcome to Graviteam Tactics Mius Front.
Today we will try to answer the question if this is the best WW2 Strategy Game.
Join me as I tell you about all the amazing features of this game.
Link to the Steam Store Page for Mius Front:
store.steampowered.com/app/31...
Link to the Steam Store Page for Tank Warfare Tunisia:
store.steampowered.com/app/54...
What the developer has to say about the game:
"Graviteam Tactics: Mius-Front - tactical battalion level combat simulation. It is a sequel to Graviteam Tactics: Operation Star and Achtung Panzer: Kharkov 1943.
Game is comprised of two modes:
Operational - turn-based mode where you can shift and concentrate forces in the chosen directions, resupply and replace units, repair and refuel vehicles.
Tactical - real-time mode where you are conducting fire combat with the enemy, capturing territory, destroying vehicles and the enemy manpower.
Four large-scale operations for the Red Army and Wehrmacht with realistic organizational structure. The campaign features more than 100 detailed vehicles produced in USSR, Germany, US and UK. Over 140 sq. km of realistic landscapes were reconstructed from topographical maps and photo and video materials.
-New enhanced UI: streamlined interface of various panels, radial orders menu and other enhancements.
-Interface appearance and customization: three variants of appearance are included, customizable unit markers (Red Army, Wehrmacht, NATO).
-High replayability and advanced AI, which selects the best strategy based on behavior, not a predetermined script.
-Advanced management of forces in the operational phase: reinforcement strategies and management of reserves.
-Statistics keeping: performance of each unit is recorded (kills, losses, awards, etc.). After each battle, damages and condition of forces and vehicles are shown in the after battle statistics.
-Battlefield simulation: realistic vision devices, smoke screens and flares, creation of trenches, explosion craters. Remnants of previous battles remain on the battlefield until the end of operation.
-Realistic soldier behavior: each soldier has several essential parameters, such as experience level, stamina and morale, which influence their behavior and effectiveness.
-Detailed weapon modeling and realistic ballistics: bullets and projectiles follow ballistic trajectories, taking wind, temperature and other parameters into account.
-Advanced armor penetration: modeling based on ballistic histograms without simplifications of probabilistic methods, generation of secondary fragmentation fields takes into account many parameters, such as the change of the field shape in space, fragments and armor characteristics, armor thickness and damage conditions.
-Complex vehicle damage system: engine, suspension, sights, weapons and targeting mechanisms can be damaged separately, affecting the combat capabilities.
-Destructible environment: almost everything can be blown up and destroyed, from landscape surface and buildings to vehicles and enemy defensive installations.
-Advanced control of the off-map artillery, featuring various fuse settings and shell types.
-Formation and movement modes: lines and columns, movement by road and covertly, infantry following behind tanks, setting a delay, fire sectors, etc.
-Automatic smoke screen laying: units set up smoke screens when enemy is spotted.
-Dynamic change of the time of day, light sources and weather effects, influence the course of battle, visibility and area passability."

The greatest wargame of all time in my opinion (and I say that as someone who truly loves Combat Mission as well.) Your video has truly done it justice and is a great example why this masterpiece is worth the time and effort it takes to ‘get’ it. Such a mind blowing contrast between macro scale (thousands of men and units fighting across huge battlefields over days) and micro detail (cold breath of men hunkered down in trenches, knocked out tanks continuing to roll down hill, people cowering as fire and explosions engulf the battlefield.) I also love the contrast between moments of quiet beauty as the sun rises and then chaotic horror as all hell breaks loose. More than any other form of media it has truly given me a comprehension of how World War Two battles likely unfolded and how horrific and stressful they must have been. Thanks for shining a light on the game as I have no doubt there are others who will fall in love with it once they discover and understand it.

Subscribed. Thank you for doing this, especially for pointing out the level of detail in this game, specifically when it comes to the modeling of both ballistics and the vehicles themselves. As far as I know there really isn't anything else out there that will account for factors such as thickness and slope of armor, angles of vision out of the viewports, etc. It really brings home that this is a golden era for computer wargaming and simulations.

After watching this review it inspired me to finally give it a try. I'm hooked on Mius Front now. I spend a couple hours every weekend trying to perfect my strategy replaying a single campaign, I absolutely enjoy the game's replayability as no campaign plays the same way twice. I've sunk in 100 hours and bought a couple DLCs during the sale. Excellent video, you helped me find my new favorite game. Great presentation! As someone who's played these types of games since the original Close Combat in 1996 (and continued with the first and second Combat Mission series [2000-2014] along with others) I have to say this game looks exceptional. It presents both a level of detail and command interface light years beyond any other tactical level combat game that I've ever seen. I don't own a copy now but plan on purchasing the whole series as soon as possible.

At this point I would not recommend that you purchase the predecessors such as Operation Star, since many of its campaigns are available as DLCs for Mius Front. All you need to get into this game is either MIUS front (Eastern front Warfare, a lot of available DLCs, a few Cold War Era DLCs) or Tank Warfare Tunisia (Same game engine with the same updates as Mius Front, Africa Theatre, few available DLCs, new DLCs do not seem to be developed at the moment, the game + its DLCs are super cheap on sale.)

it's look indeed amazing. But it lacks tutorials. Many exist on youtube, but are made either too chaoticaly, so they are jumping all over the place without real explanation, or are very low quality, so you're mostly fighting with your ears to understand what's being said in-between shots and explosions sounds set at 100%. Yes, it's difficult to get into, but once you get you're feet wet and put the time and effort into mastering all it's nuances you'll be in wargaming heaven. One of the best moments in Graviteam is when you encounter the bulk of the enemy's armour and you don't have an appropriate force to deal with them head-on but with careful planning and some luck you could ruin the enemy's armor for the rest of the campaign then you take a gamble and go over all the AT weaponry you have, you study the terrain for good ambush positions and all you want is to disable the armour. For a tutorial or how to, in my opinion the game's tutorial teaches you bare minimum and I recommend just watching people play campaigns and seeing what they do. As for graphics, it isn't a focus point for me when I want to pick up a game, for example, my favourite looking games are Blitzkrieg 1, SupCom and RA1 and what I appreciate about Graviteam is it works, runs well on my GT730. I cannot recommend it enough.

I discovered this game today, I have played my fair share of ww2 pc strategy games, company of heroes 1 & 2, Steel Division 2, Men of War etc none of them really ever latched into me and I would rather play my tabletop stuff because they’re more complex. But this game just looks like it will scratch that itch. To me WW2 needs to be portrayed as a brutal grind. My only wish is they had some western front maps, maybe in the future.

Subscribed. Very nice intro to GTMF. In fact, I purchased the Croatian DLC based on your videos on that series which I am now starting to watch. I like your narrative style and you seem to have a very good mastery of GTMF which I am hoping will teach me a few things to allow me to dive deeper into the game. I have been playing Graviteam games since the original Kharkov 1943 but most of that time I have NOT been playing because of the difficult learning curve to understand how the game works. The language barrier between the Ukrainian devs and my own English language is by far the biggest reason why I walk away because the documentation even after all these years is terrible and a lot of things in the game are even today still unexplained or under-explained. I keep coming back to it though because like you mentioned there really is nothing else out there with this level of realism and historical accuracy. There are many KZbinrs with tutorials and playthroughs but even some of them don't fully understand the game mechanics (does anybody besides Andrey...? ;-), and as for the ones who do understand it well enough, their videos are usually older and may be still somewhat valid today but are outdated for the latest game engine and improvements/addons. Speaking of which, even though the game in its various forms has been around for many years and for most games by now would be unsupported and gone from hard drives, it is quite impressive how Graviteam keeps improving and adding to the game to extend its lifetime. Keep up the good work!
@Tonci87
@Tonci87 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, they released a new patch a week ago and it overhauled the Off map artillery completely. Also the DLCs that they keep releasing are excellent. The user manual covers the most important aspects of the game fairly well, but the writing is at times obtuse and unclear. The language barrier certainly is the cause for that. I can see how a newcomer to the series would struggle a lot, so that is why I'm trying to help.

Oh yes, to a newcomer this game will look very overwhelming at first, but how overwhelmed you are depends a lot on the complexity of the campaign you are playing. If you compare the three campaigns that so far are on my channel, you will see that the Croatian Legion and Chouigui Pass campaigns are much simpler than the Raging Bridgehead Campaign that I'm playing now.

It was a great overview of how the game works! Yes, I think many are confused and turned off by it since it's not really an RTS, but rather a battle simulator. 😉 PS: Subbed! 😃

Thank you Tonci, sadly Graviteam do not make tank simulators anymore, SABOW was their last one and from what I understand did not sell well. That imho was due to the choice of theater, had they chosen WW2 East vs West I feel we would still be getting tank simulations from Graviteam :) as they would go hand in hand with Mius Front asset and map wise.

@Tonci87
@Tonci87 2 жыл бұрын
The gameplay is very different. Graviteam Tactics does not allow you to micromanage your units like CM does. It would not be feasible in GT because of the large number of units. GT also has realtime battles and a strategic campaign layer. You get the feeling of fighting battles that go on for days with you gaining and loosing ground. GT also has the big emphasis on logistics and communication/battlefield cohesion. The Damage modelling in GT is absolutely superior.

Not just that. More than just the time delay, they want to simulate the amount of information and orders than can simultaneously be relayed through the communication channels of that time. As a player you can set a manual time limit for every order. I considered to do that at some point, just for fun.

That would be quite something, although I on´t know how they could pull it off. It would be very difficult to balance the germans vs. the soviets. On second thought, maybe it is better that there is no MP and they can focus on making the units realistic, instead of thinking about balance (Seen too many games were realism and immersion were thrown out the windows in favour of some perceived balance).

Hey, thank you for the video. What is the difference between Mius Front and Steel Division II?
@Tonci87
@Tonci87 Жыл бұрын
Well, Mius Front is a battlefield simulator, Steel Division simply a WW2 RTS. For example, tanks don´t have an arbitrary range limit in Mius Front. If they can see the enemy and fire with a reasonable chance of hitting, they will take the shot. In Steel Division many tanks have a fixed range limit of 2km as an example. Tanks in steel division also have hitpoints. Damage to each crewmember and the tanks systems is precisely simulated in Mius front. In Mius front unit stats like stamina, exhaustion individual ammunition loadouts are modeled. Many many things you won´t find in Steel division.

Bought the game before I saw your review. I'm really liking it, however there are some glaring issues such as a general lack of documentation and jank on an individual unit level that really suck some of the enjoyment out of it. I'll continue to play it, but I just wish the devs would focus on the accessibility of the game
@Tonci87
@Tonci87 2 жыл бұрын
Accessibility has always been an issue with Graviteam games, and the perceived jankiness on an individual unit level is a direct result of that. The game manual has become a decent source of information (the version on steam is not up to date for some reason, go to the developer website), but watching some informed gameplay on YT (rare and hard to find outside of my channel, there are so many people who have no clue how to play) will give you a good idea about how to do things. Apart from that, use the visualizers that are available in the game if something doesn´t seem to make sense, they do help to explain things to some extent.
@KhanGirey
@KhanGirey 2 жыл бұрын
@@Tonci87 Thanks for the reply. I think what I meant by jank can be explained by this example. I was going through the tutorial in which you are ambushing a German convoy. You have access to an MG team. Now, what I wanted to do, was deploy the MG team in such a way that the machinegun enfilades the troops with a firing line down the road. I told the team to "take cover" on a piece of the road that could overlook the fighting area. What I got, was the section leader charging forwards (he was in fact the closest man to the enemy), the assistant gunner laying in the road, and the mg gunner floating in the air with the machinegun on his back somewhere off in the woods. The big problem I'm trying to work with is getting my troops to do what I want them to do in a logical manner.

@@Tonci87 Thanks, that's what I did. Perhaps it was just a bug. Maybe the missions haven't been fully updated? I was playing Stepanovka quick mission which teaches you about comm lines, but what I noticed was that in about 2/6 tries of that mission, the observer commander would never even send the wire runner out. I think you're right about looking at the big picture. I'll treat my armies as ant colonies: I can prod them in a direction, but I can't really force them to do anything - even if that gets them killed.

I really enjoyed your overview in this video. Personally, I tried playing Achtung Panzer when it first came out, but I struggled quite a bit just to be able to play that game. I actually purchased Mius Front a couple of months ago when it was on sale, but I haven't had the guts to get into it yet. I'm someone who really likes realistic strategy games (or simulations), but I'm really quite awful at them. I also really like Combat Mission but it's the same there, I'm just terrible at playing it. I really wish I could get into this one. It would be really nice if the game itself had more robust introductory material for new players.

Forgive to pose this question, but: is Graviteam Tactics: Mius-Front comparable or not comparable to Battlefront Red Thunder? And if comparable is it better or worse?
@Tonci87
@Tonci87 2 жыл бұрын
I don´t think that the two games can be compared to each other very well. While both try to portray battles on the eastern front, they go about that in a very different way. In GT Mius front the battles happen in real time and the campaigns can stretch for days of ingame time, with a strong focus on troop deployment and logistics. Combat Mission on the other hand allows you to micromanage units to a degree that is not possible in Mius front, where the AI is quite autonomous.
