I really like the points you guys made regarding when you increase the accessibility of events like fights by having them on netflix or even lets say cable tv the sponsorship dollars are going to increase exponentially. This is one of the biggest problems with the ufc and pay per view model is that it relies on the consumer to purchase it for the fighters to get paid more. Its kind of like the tipping model in american restaurants where the staffs wages and style of life fall on the customer rather than the restaurant who should be paying them to live comfortably in the first place. Just increase the accessibility to these events by having them on netflix or cable tv, viewership and general public interest will rise and the sponsorship dollars will get huge, and then you can pay the fighters more. Easy fix. And then youre solving the issue of illegal streams too

^ I actually didn’t even think of that. I’m surprised ESPN hasn’t completely infiltrated the UFC & tried to censor it and water it down. They would totally ruin Strickland if they did.

It’s been well documented that companies are planning on the future to completely switch to online media. It’s a larger market and has that ability to be accessed anywhere, anytime, seamlessly. The proposition mentioned in the video would not only give people access to lower cost PPV, but it will also influence people to access all of their other sports that are accessible through the ESPN app. It could completely change the game for the UFC and make them even bigger/scarier than they are now.

In the UK we get 12 yearly numbered cards free and only 2 a year are PPVs (generally Leon Edwards or Conor McGregor cards). Also the PPVs are only £20 ($25 or something like that) because they're in the middle of the night and MMA gets almost no news coverage here.

I feel their best monetisation strategy (once they're done growing) will be to sell PPVs through their own app (for $60/$70/$80/whatever they calculate earns the most) and then have both their current fight pass and an upgraded tier of fight pass that includes PPVs for, say, the basic price + half the cost of a PPV. That lets them bundle PPVs to fans because fans will watch a lot more average cards when they have to cancel or downgrade a subscription as opposed to just not buying it. Yes, you're charging "half price" on PPVs but you're selling them a bunch of PPVs you wouldn't otherwise and it's "half price" on top of the basic fight pass price (which would get a lot more subscribers). And for the occasional viewers (who'd never be interested in fight pass), they still get their "full" PPV price.

Im at 4:28 but am I misunderstanding what he said? He said at 80 dollars monthly, if they could get a million people to sign up for it, they'd make up for the PPVs? Is that what he said? If so, Dana just confirmed almost 3 million people bought one PPV which is 80 bucks so that's 240 million bucks. So tripled what the subscription model would bring in yearly in just one event....

I think they would be smart to follow the same approach they’ve had in Brazil since launching Fight Pass here. For us, we pay a monthly or yearly subscription fee that allows us to watch all UFC events, including the PPVs. Given the fact they have a partnership with ESPN in the US, I believe they would merge fight pass within the espn network

I worked a bennigans the steakhouse in a small west texas town years ago. People wondered why they did show ufc fights because they had a bar there. The manager told people if they ordered the fight they had to pay for each separate tv. So it would have cost like 400 dollars for them to show a fight. Idk if it was true or not but if it is what sports bar would want to show fights paying for each tv the bar has.

They could go to a streaming model but then have 4 x $100 PPVs a year, where they are monster cards and the whole card is pretty much on PPV. Being on Netflix etc opens up the global audience further, then you capitalise on these additional fans by having 4 monster PPVs where you try to get huge PPV numbers exploiting the casual fan base generated with the mega stars.

When I started watching MMA again after watching a bit when I was younger, I was surprised at how expensive the PPVs were. I'm a wrestling fan so I'm used to how the WWE network and other similar services work where you pay the price for the platform and you get all of the PPVs along with that subscription. I could never justify paying $80 on top of a subscription fee to watch the PPVs. It's way too expensive for what they are offering. If they moved to a model like the one WWE does, I would probably watch every PPV. I think they could get Netflix to give them a look especially now that they have WWE. Netflix definitely needs the subscribers.

remember when DAZN started as an "all u can eat" boxing platform? Then they started charging $30 for their premium events, this will be the future of this business model. They want the consistent revenue stream via subs + additional ppv premiums.

I’m in New Zealand and seem to have it good based on these discussions. I pay between $40 to $50 nzd through fight pass for a PPV which on current exchange rates is equivalent to $24 to $30 usd
@LarryMayvid8 ай бұрын
We have no idea if this would be beneficial, as in cheaper, for the fans, but it wouldn't be complicated to come up with a pay structure. Pay them based on views. Essentially the same thing. And if there are people who are stopping and starting their subscription, it would be mostly safe to assume that that's correlated with the ppv card, and that could be either a secondary or the primary determining factor in the fighter pay. Depending on how common that starting and stopping ended up being.
