I was born in 1956 and Blackpool was packed solid for most of the year.As a kid I had a set of pram wheels made into a cart and made a fortune (for me anyway) at Bloomfield Road coach park with a carry your bags service. Even as a schoolkid at the old Blackpool Grammar near Poulton Blackpool was worth seeing. After decades away I visited as a retiree this year and it is so sad to see it. Dishevelled and unloved. Blackpool can be as quiet and deserted as Barrow in Furness on a rainy day in the week during November and December. I used to love Blackpool years ago in the 1980s when there there were shows taking place after the illuminations had finished, and remember just before Christmas in 1985 enjoying a special Friday night at the Fun House in stockingfeet from 9pm to 9am when the Pleasure Beach was not normally open.

For some reason, I find Southport really difficult to navigate. A lot of the residential roads looks the same, I used to deliver round there and had to use sat nav every day, I just couldn’t find any marker points to relate to.

My uncle used to have a workshop based underneath the old sewage treatment plant based opp Manchester square-and ran his pleasure boat rides from south pier during the 70’s. My dad and grandad worked with him and I spent my summers on the beach alongside them. I loved visiting my uncle in his workshop u were able to see and hear the sea in the sewage pipes. Went to Great Yarmouth last week for a walk around and to do some photography. Only the amusement arcades were open on the seafront. The piers were closed and a lot of putting things away for the end of the year. At least a bit more open in Blackpool.
@basylpeterjones2 жыл бұрын
A lot of things are open on the seafront in Great Yarmouth in the winter - not just the amusements. You're talking rubbish: I stayed there this time last year. One of the piers was open along with the model village and the cafe there. All the other seafront cafes and tearooms were also open. Some attractions were closed but Pirate Cove golf stays open.
@maccate68682 жыл бұрын
@@basylpeterjones Last week there was one tea room open, the model village was closed, the other large tea room was closed and even the bin in one area were all collected together. Everything at Britannia Pier was shut and locked. Only the amusements at Wellington Pier were open. Most of the shops were open in town in the morning but by the afternoon a lot had shut up shop. I have photographs of what it was like. But on the other hand Sheringham was all open and very friendly people there.

@@maccate6868 It will be the same as last year. I had a meal at the café at the model village - maybe the village was closed. I went in the other large tearoom. And other places to eat were open. From then on it was sporadic visits in the 90's, noughties and beyond. Now when I go back its cold and bracing, quite expensive as well and run down. Some people still dig Blackpool, me less so. Its a shame because there is so much potential but financial investment and decent jobs are lacking. But you can't single out one seaside resort because there are so many dotted around the UK in a poor state from Withernsea to Clacton.

Used to stay at the Queens Hotel every January in the late 80s/90s. Used to be a great hotel back in the day. When you did that 360 by the North Pier, it reminds me of Yates that was opposite there. It was the first one I ever went in, would have been around 1988. Remember thinking a Wine Lodge sounded very posh, well to a lad from the Midlands it was....😂

Would you consider including the rehab centre called ocean recovery on the seafront,think it would be good for people to know its there,it is a private rehab centre and it saved my life

Hi Stephen, Just stumbled on your great Blackpool review. I will subscribe to your channel, as I quite like a walk on the wild side, too 😂👍 I had heard that from this year, the famous illumination period was being extended until the New Year, instead of ending in early November, as it has done previously. Should bring lots of extra tourism in the quieter run-up to Xmas. When I next visit, I might stay in the brand new Boulevard Hotel, which I believe is really fabulous. Keep up the good work 😎👍

Thanks Mark. The Boulevard Hotel is good enough for heads of state, so it must be classy.
