I’ve always found that if you need something but you won’t use it often it’s better to get the corded version. If you’re going to use it often, don’t buy entry level.

@@thaddansen2989 it is frustrating to give up on a cordless tool because batteries are unavailable or more expensive than replacing the tool. I first saw this by finding a fresh looking Milwaukee 9.6v in the trash at work, then searching for batteries. Later went through it again at home with a 12v Porter Cable. I find my cordless drills & saws handy, but keep my corded for heavy work.

I am firmly entrenched in the Ryobi line, but I did pick up a 3/8 drill from Ryobi for $59.00. I think it is $49.00 now. It is a good drill. I think it came with a charger and a battery too. Not everybody needs a brushless drill or a hammer drill either.

The biggest problem that I see with most, if not all of these inexpensive drills is that they only have a 3/8" chuck. Sure, most home gamers won't need anything bigger most of the time but, a 1/2" chuck is much more convenient than trying to find a bit with a cut down shank when they do need it.

Menards owner, John Menard, is the richest resident of Wisconsin. He also won a Supreme Court case, basically validating that Wisconsin is a communal law state, not a common law state. Said another way, his long term girlfriend, now ex-girlfriend sued for 1/2 his billions, claiming spousal benefits even though they were never officially married. In many states in the US, most states actually, and in particular Texas, you can be legally married and not even know you are married simply by living like you are married over time, a.k.a. Common Law marriage. The court upheld Wisconsin is a communal law state, meaning you must have clear documentation that you each understood you were married. She lost, he won, and he got to keep his billion$.

No Menard's remotely close to me but I do order from their website once in a while. I really like that they do special orders from their website. I bought replacement parts for my bandsaw from their website cheaper than the manufacturer's website for example and they just ordered and shipped from the manufacturer. Comes in handy. I would love if they would expand and open a Menard's store here. There's at least 6 lowes and 6 home depot's with a 30-45 minute drive of me... Sigh..

For entry level tools, I think most consumers would be better off with a corded tool. The problem with an entry level cordless tool is you're marrying yourself to a battery platform. When you do decide it's time for a nicer tool, it's doubtful your investment in batteries will work with the new platform. Also, many companies seem to see their entry level tools as disposable, so they're much more apt to abandon the battery platform leaving your tool investment high and dry. The problem, no one seems to be making a full line of corded tools!

I have a boat-load of Ryobi tools going back from the old blue colored ones up thru current brushless models. I had only one issue with a Ryobi tools when I broke the collet on an old blue right angle drill. My favorite 12V drill is an old B&D Firestorm that uses NiCad batteries. It one of the best cordless drills for screwing in screws and general purposes use. It has lots of low speed torque and a super variable speed trigger that gives the user incredible control over the speed range. Although it uses NiCad batteries, they are still manufactured and sold. In addition, if one has a car battery charger, you can "restore" dead NiCad batteries. It will be a sad day for me when these two old workhorses die. When I purchased them many years ago, they were on sale as set at Lowes consisting of 2 drills, 4 batteries, 2 chargers and 2 blow-molded carrying cases for $29. I purchased a set for me and a set for my son-in-law. He still has his and uses them to this day.

Speaking of Menards, I bought the Tool Shop corded hammer drill years ago, at the entry level price of $17 (15% off bag), to sink anchor holes in concrete for a deck project. Thought it would last one project then I would throw it away. It survived. Then setup a gazebo on concrete, shed on concrete, and bunch of other stuff. Drill runs as good as new, but looks like I dragged it behind the van. If anyone can come up with a good reason to throw the ugly thing away please let me know, I need the shelf space to store some dead cordless drill batteries.

My first cordless drill was Craftsman back in the 80’s. The batteries didn’t last very long. It sat in its case most of the time as I used the corded tools. My first venture in to Ryobi came in the blue line. The cordless saw was a break thru for me. The batteries just sucked..... but useable. My wife gave me the new green combo unit for Christmas one year and I have been a Ryobi fan boy ever since. Higher power batteries, the selection of tools has me investing more each year. Ryobi also has a big presence on the TV diy shows. I am just a home owner, but I find jobs for newer tools. I try to help other new tools buyers to invest on something that will hang around for a long time. Buying cheap tools never worked for me. I started doing lawn service several years ago. Now I carry A 18 volt Ryobi hedge trimmer, blower, and a air compressor. I think cheap tools will always be around......

Everything you said here is spot-on! I’ve noticed the same trends. My local Lowe’s has NO Porter Cable or Black and Decker at all. Even their house brand, Kobalt is squeezed for shelf space. Craftsman rules the roost there, and they are nice, but I don’t think they need to abandon so much other stuff. Regarding Hyper Tough at Walmart, it seems good for entry level and for a short time, many lucky folks got a kit with drill, impact, recip saw, and light for $40. That was a clearance deal but all those are still offered at affordable prices. HT make real affordable hand tools too. Black and Decker saved my ass when I was 18 and got me started. I have moved on up to other stuff but still miss seeing the selection.

I am a home gamer. I got the Black and Decker 3-pack from Walmart. Drill driver, blower, and impact driver. So I had a couple of batteries and a couple of tools. Then I poked around on Amazon and saw they had a large selection of the B&D with the same battery. I bought the random orbit sander with another battery -- for $50 or so. I bought a jigsaw, for again $50 with a battery. Then I got a circular saw. Same deal. So now I have a nice little set of tools and like 9 batteries. If one breaks, it's only $50 and the key here is all the batteries, which are wear items and are incredibly expensive for many brands. I know they're not incredibly durable. But the cost of entry is really low. Ace Hardware was selling the B&D battery alone for $49, if I remember correctly. Instead, on Amazon, buy a tool with a battery for about that same price.

Makita’s CXT line really has a special place that not many people remember. Way back when makita started making the 9.6volt cordless drill, not many people know that they also made a cordless jigsaw, 3 1/2inch circular saw, and a recip saw. All those size tools particularly the 3 1/2 inch circular saw, the sizes are still used in the CXT line, they have a 3 1/2 inch circular saw, of course they made it way more compact, but it still uses that iconic 3 1/2 inch makita blade.

I am a DeWalt 20V/FlexVolt fanboy and have a nice selection. Great for outdoor work and big jobs. You noted the M12 line but not much detail. Over the last couple of months, I have also gotten into the Milwaukee M12 line and I have NOT bought a single FUEL tool. I have strictly gone after the brushed versions for specific purposes with "size" being a key factor. Try working inside a trailer to do things like put doors on a dinette bench using a full size DeWalt recip saw. Then try the small M12 brushed Hackzall. Same for cabinets and the multi-tool. Same for the 3/8th inch ratchet. It will go most anywhere... The stapler is da bomb... Of note, the newer FUEL versions are starting to look like full size 18/20 volt versions in some cases with similar pricing... What's the point. If you are going to go there, then just get the DeWalt Atomic and cut to the chase with the same battery platform for the big tools... So, you mentioned M12, but for "endusers," who are homeowners/DIYers and would like a quality brand name, KNOW the distinction between the brushLESS FUEL tools and their older BRUSHed versions. As you note, they are making killer deals of late. The OLDER brushed ones are great tools consistently smaller versions of the FUEL versions and on sale very competitive compared to other cheaper brands... Keep your eyes open...

Milwaukee makes great entry level tools. Bad thing is that they charge professional prices for them. Also the problem with 12 volt tools is Ohm's Law: P=I squared R. To maintain equivalent power, if the voltage goes down the current must come up. This increases heat and shortens the life of the tool and batteries.

In Australia by far the bulk of “home owner” buyers shop at Bunnings - they have a house brand called Ozito (their cordless tools I think are a rebrand of some UK brand). They sit below ryobi and from what I’ve heard are respectable enough. I think the thing is you can’t just sell junk in these days of online reviews (if you want your brand to last). The thing I don’t get is this - a ryobi brushless impact is $A200, a Milwaukee is $320. From all reviews I’ve seen the Milwaukee is in a different class - there isn’t enough space there for not only those two brands, but AEG/rigid as well.

I’m in for under $250 and I have a circ saw, jig saw, recip saw, orbital sander, drill/driver, impact driver, and light. I have 4 batteries. I recently built a shed for some overflow storage and bikes with these tools and they all worked beautifully. The tool options are limited and they’re all brushed, but if they all break tomorrow I’ve got my money’s worth. Having held and used Ryobi, I’ll stick to what I have until the wheels fall off. Ryobi’s triggers feel cheap and aside from the drills they are cheap, fixed switches. No variable. They’re fine for a home gamer, and fine for anyone that doesn’t take apart their tools to see what makes them chooch lol

That Warrior drill from HF isn't too bad. I got one a couple of years ago for my Nephew who was getting married. He is still using it for all kinds of stuff around the house. These days I am trying to standardize on Black and Decker. I have just found there tools to last a long time, even when I use them outside in the rain. The batteries are expensive, but they are worth the investment. I still have a few Ryobis around, and I am going to keep them going until they die. The thing that annoys me about Ryobi is that they still haven't fixed their battery problem. The Lithiums will run down too low and then won't charge and will flash red saying bad battery. I open them up and put a surface charge back on the cells directly to around 12V and then they will take off and charge again. I did a video on the process and it is one of my most popular videos. I have gotten all my Ryobi batteries out of the recycle bin and done that too them and they all take a charge and still work fine.

Cheap cordless tools aren't anywhere near as good. Pretty much everything I own in cordless I have in corded as well, they just don't get used as much anymore. Haven't used a corded circ saw in probably 5 years and corded drill are really just used for wire wheels etc where the use is sustained for long periods of time. I don''t think Ryobi was ever intended as entry level for the consumer in general, rather it was their entry into the market and trying to get a foothold that caused the low prices so it makes sense once they obtained a significant part of the market that they increased prices along with quality and tool diversity. Black an Decker battery tools were junk, especially the firestorm. Swore off B&D in the early 2000's after having gone through many drills. Have they gotten better?

Harbor freight use to have a decent entry level 18v cordless tools Chicago Electric. I had a 5.5 in circ saw and 1/2 in drill that I had used for many years. They dumped the batteries support and became worthless. I switched to Ryobi this past summer because I wanted an Impact driver. I’ve replaced drill and saw with Ryobi. They won’t ditch there batteries.

In my opinion one of the decisions on buying a cordless tool is future battery replacement. Ryobi has been on the right track with its batteries. Amazon's off brands may be cheap but can you get batteries to be replaced?

I haven't had any use for entry level tools. In 1999, I purchased the Dewalt 1/2" hammer drill at Homedepot for $269.00 and I used it right up until 2017 before it finally died. That is a long run and speaks to tool quality. However all the time I owned it I found the ergonomics to be pitiful. So even though I have mostly Dewalt tools, I decided to evaluate my options. I chose the Milwaukee M18 and I am very satisfied with my choice. For me the longevity of a quality tool far outweighs the initial steep price.

pretty sure TTI still has the molds for the blue ryobi stuff. maybe retool that to be their 'entry level'. a selling point could be the batteries can eventually move up to their 'pro-sumer' green line. essentially sell the battery with a free 'trash tier' tool and when it dies, they go get the tool only variant in green.

Im a diehard ryobi fanboy, but the black and decker matrix system was gymicy but very interesting in my opinion. I thought they were a neat idea and thought it at least deserved a mention. Also, was the skilsaw originally just a circular saw? I thought i remembered skilsaw being synonymous with a circ saw (sort of like sawzall). Is that real or was it just a weird thing from my upbringing?

I'm just getting fed up with harbor freight taking a chicago electric or central pneumatic tool, changing the color, and calling it some new brand that never existed, and marking up the price 50%. Most HF shoppers knew what they were getting with CE, but in many cases, all you needed for a rare job was a cheap tool. Now, to get the same "cheap" tool, you have to buy a (Dare I say) "Boutique" brand at HF, one which is rarely discountable with the 20% off coupon. If you go back 3 or 4 years, you probably have 70% less "brands" even though the number of tools is probably about the same. The 20% off coupons are so bad, they might as well tell you what you can actually use it for instead of what you can't use it for.

I'm guessing that the higher operating cost and need to honor warrantee at the brick and mortar places means that they can't justify using shelf space for true entry-level tools, as the margins are too slim, and thus entry-level tools will be consigned to the online market, with just a token presence in the brick and mortar outlets.

I thought black and decker was gone for sure last winter. Lowe’s was clearing them all out. They were all moved to the clearance end cap, and they brought in craftsman to replace the porter cable section and shrunk the porter cable section to just and end cap like B&D used to be. Then last spring they started clearing the porter cable end cap and what do you know, they brought the B&D end cap back and they put in an end cap for SKIL.

Seems to me if the low cost is the mark you must hit as a consumer, at least Harbor Freight has a store you can return a defective product to. We've all been there, I started as a general contractor with a Chicago Electric recip saw, because just starting out it was as much as I could justify spending. I got a lot of work done with that tool. Worked for a year and a half, failed magnificently and having earned a few bucks, I replaced it with Makita.

I think what you're seeing is a reaction to HD and Lowes branding/customers. They are shifting from "professional/homeowner" to "professional/serious DIYer." Walmart still have homeowner friendly brands like Hart (more serious DIY) and HyperTough (solid homeowner), but that lines up exactly with their customers.

Ryobi is fantastic. The tools are a great value. And it’s a great lifestyle brand. Hyper tough killed black and decker. Hyper tough is either cheaper or has way better specs for the price point. And it would be great if harbor freight built a proper warrior line. Even if they added an impact driver, recip and circular saw to it. That would be great for a starter line. The lack of tools was the big reason I sold my warrior stuff and went to hyper tough. Also you’ve really grown the channel. Last time I looked you were right around 33k subs. Great job Jeff!!

My seriously old B/D cordless drill has finally died. I think its got a bad cell in the battery pack but its probably about 10 years old. I need a decent drill for work and looked over a lot of them. What I find is that a lot of these drills come with a sub par battery pack. Something in the range of 1.3 / 1.5 amp. I would need several batteries and chargers in order to keep one drill working. So, Yesterday I bought a Kobalt 24v max drill - brushless with charger and 4amp battery for 124.00. Its a bit on the heavy side but will do a good job. The price for batteries is insane IMHO. I also do not like the "Max" voltage rating. Just list what the voltage is instead of this stupid "Max" rating they have going on.
