Hi from the South East of Ireland 🇮🇪. I came across your channel earlier this year and really enjoy your videos 😊. Though I've been growing some food for many years, this is my first year with a polytunnel and a greenhouse. I'm learning a lot from you both and looking forward to continuing growing food through the winter ☺️. Thank you both for all you do - you're an inspiration ❤️.

Thank you so much for your kind words! We're thrilled to hear that our videos are helping you on your gardening journey. Best of luck with your polytunnel and greenhouse-we can't wait to hear about your winter harvest - keep in touch!

No polytunnel here but my greenhouse will be full to brimming with many of your suggestions. Just adding potatoes to the list. I'm also doing them in pots on the allotment. If it is mild it will be a winner. Otherwise I've not lost a lot.
@nodignorfolkgardener45752 ай бұрын
It sounds like you have a great plan in place Ken! Potatoes can be so rewarding, especially when grown in pots. Good luck with your greenhouse and here's for an extended harvest of fresh vegetables!

Thanks Barry! Yes covering things definately hlps even if you do a cheap mini application like I do with pvc piping and plastic. It helps me even with my harsh winters. I bought some winter density seeds but first try did not germinate. Soil was probably still too warm. I'll try again next week and see if I can get that and frisee endive to grow under plastic for the winter.
@nodignorfolkgardener45752 ай бұрын
Hi Frank, it's so inspiring to read that you give things a try even with such harsh winters. Do give those seeds another try maybe for you as things start to cool off a bit, lettuce are not so good at germinating when conditions are too hot - do keep us updated and keep sowing, have those plants ready to go!

Super video Barry & Mrs W. I have sown much of what you are sowing in this video, even the same varieties in many cases. What soinach are you growing? I am growing Fmilia, Amazon and giant winter. The only thing I havn't sown yt are radishes. I have 4 tubs of potatoes on the go, plus 3 tubs of carrots. They should keep us going as we on't eat that many potatoes. My celeriac doesn't seem to be growing a big as last years! I have grown more this year though after running out last year- simply love them and they are so diabetic friendly. We are starting to store lots of stable manure ready to mulch the beds in the spring. We usually collect 2 compost bays worth for the veg garden and another for the flower borders. I can't grow a lot under cover in the winter as my greenhouse is used for the protection of my tender perennials, but I still manage to get quite a lot of crops in- anything that will suit container growing;. Happy gardening 🙂
@nodignorfolkgardener45752 ай бұрын
Thank you Belinda, I love hearing about your garden setup! Sounds like you’re going to have a ton of goodies to munch on. Keep at it, and let’s hope those celeriacs catch up. Some years are better than others when it comes to celeriac. Happy gardening! 🌱

@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 I think the dry weather has had a lot to so with it- they like moisture and I don't have a water source on the allotment so only have wht I collect from the shed roof. Weeks without rain, in the heat, has made keeping things moist difficult, although they , new plants and the beans were given priority.
@nodignorfolkgardener45752 ай бұрын
I suspect you are right Belinda, and is what I meant by some years being better than others. With water scarce for you, you made the right decisions with prioritising your water!

Only have a small plastic green house shelving unit, but I’m hoping to get some of my window boxes into there to grow some bits…. Maybe some lettuce for my sandwiches and may put some of my strawberry plants in there in pots- 3 to a 10L pot should be ok I think. Just to try for the earlier harvest. It may not work but it’s worth a try.

Hi mr Wilson older gardener here, first time growing melon pepito f1 how do you tell when ripe they are a cantaloupe type
@nodignorfolkgardener4575Ай бұрын
Thank you for your question, first time for us too! Smell is a good clue, cracking of the skin where the stalk attaches the melon, change in colour and a little softness will help you know when your melons are ready to be enjoyed!

Hi Barry I've run out of space in the ground of my greenhouse (going to put garlic, spring onions & beetroot there) so can I put the lettuce (Autumn King & Winter Density) in troughs/pots on top of the staging? I don't have a polytunnel. I got 1 Emir melon from each of my plants & I thought they were a bit bland to taste. They looked good though! Warm regards, Clare
@nodignorfolkgardener4575Ай бұрын
Hi Clare! Yes, you can definitely grow your lettuce in troughs or pots on top of the staging. They should thrive as long as they get enough sunlight and water. I quite liked the Emir and you can see the result on our next video. Good luck with your greenhouse!

How often do you water your greenhouse and polytunnel in the winter months?
@nodignorfolkgardener45752 ай бұрын
In the winter months, it's usually less frequent than in the summer. I typically check the moisture level of the soil and water when it feels dry, about every couple of weeks typically!
