Grind out the Audi logo with dremel, get one company to scan or do a new CAD design of the part. Modify to make it thicker. Then get that design and get another company to print it. There is many companies online where you can upload the file, choose what matherial to print it out and they’ll 3D print them for you. That way when you provide them with your own CAD file there is no questions about patents and copyrights.
@The_Noticer.5 ай бұрын
Have used this in the past with PC parts too, making my own fan shrouds etc. Having your own printer is too expensive, but there are many third parties that can just print it for you. Especially if it has to be heavier duty plastics, those printers can run into the tens of thousands.

Can a 3D printer print this part in a suitable material that will withstand the rigors of this particular application? I've no doubt a 3D printer could print the part, its just the suitability of the media it can use for this senario.
@Dalbayob695 ай бұрын
@@peterjames6607 there is various materials available. The part is originally cast from type of nylon, the same type of nylon can be used in 3D printers. And I’m sure at this day and age there is even materials available that will stand up to friction and temperature better than the original part. I men, it’s mega expensive, but they even 3D print parts from titanium.

@@DontDrinkTheFlavorAid But you could maybe 3D print a mould :) I'm not sure what you mean with 3D printer crowd, I just had some fanshrouds made for my PC, so i'm not invested much into it. But I see your points, liability sounds like a solid reason.

Not difficult to design a "new" part which would be fully interchangeable with the original...it's done all of the time to avoid infringement of copyright. PA66 is a super common grade of Nylon so it's not really an issue to sort. Not as easy as ordering off the shelf but these things will only become more common.

You might be able to get the guide 3d printed in a strong material soon they have just launched a new filament that's very expensive but it's 3x stronger then PA6 called PPA-CF as long as it's printed on something like a X1 carbon with heated bed etc it may actually be strong enough, the other option is of course to laser print it also which is more expensive but apparently it's very good.
@stevensmith23983 ай бұрын
Hi, Injection moulded polymers are very different to 3D printed polymers. Machined plastic will not be a resilient as injection moulded as the surface will be different. The Audi plastic colour would indicate there is additives in the polymer. Standard grades of PA66 is white or Black. I would suggest apart from the Heat stabilisation there is a lubricant like molybdenum disulphide or PTFE. I would suggest talking to a plastic material distributor like Distrupol in the UK. An Aluminium low volume injection mould tool would not be that expensive - people like Protolabs Telford provide low volume series to OEMs in the UK.

Copyright shouldn't be an issue unless the part is using the Audi logo. You might want to check to make sure it's not patented, but that's unlikely to be the case at this point. Tons of aftermarket companies make parts without permission from the original manufacturer and since the part is no longer available there should be no problems.
@rkan25 ай бұрын
Yeah, the patent has probably expired so as long as you are not infringing Audi's trademark, there should be no issue. IANAL 😅

Stuff like this we used encounter with industrial equipment - NLA plastic parts. That guide has 2 "fixed" dimensions - the guide curve & the mounting hole positions. The rest is just blah blah once the part fits. We got parts made out of ballistic nylon that had the 2 critical dimensions - doesn't matter what, pick the correct solid thickness that matches the part & get the 2 critical dimensions machined - ballistic nylon is "Better" than any other plastic, so it will be beyond fit for use. Can't get the plastic part? Make it. It's an opportunity, not a problem. If you can't get it, neither can others - sell them your part. Buy an 8*4 sheet of the correct thickness & get the parts water-jet cut. Ignore all the manufacturers nonsense apart from the 2 critical dimensions.

There is always engineering solutions, for example 3D printing for this plastic part? I have a crappy old (2013) mitsubishi ASX here in Australia, and the dealers do not have engine mounts for it. Apparently there is one in Japan if I wait at least 4 weeks to get it in and a huge cost ($300 AUD for one bloody engine mount, there are 4 total). Manufacturers are making crap that breaks to force people to buy something new(er). Ripping the public off seems to now be normal business practice all over.
