What do you think to charity shops selling games on eBay? You’ll see the context in this episode

they need to make money for charity, but that said, we see shops up and down the country closing down as there's less footfall now.

Don't mind them selling on the bay, however split the media between the shop and ebay / and rotate if it doesn't sell.

Have to admit, my experiences in charity shops have been similar. I don't have a problem with them putting good condition/rarer items on eBay to raise more for the charity. My local CEX has scaled back its retro section, but there is a new market stall opening up which I have yet to check out.

This is exactly what puts me off going to charity shops these days. I totally get why they go on eBay, but for those of us who love collecting and finding bargains, it totally kills the thrill of the hunt.

It's not just games, the entire 2nd hand media market has become joyless - same with CDs, same with Blu-Ray and the relatively few DVDs worth anything. In the age of Big Data, everyone knows what everything's worth, no bargains to be had. The thrill of the hunt is dead. The only thing I still buy in charity shops is the occasional book or a DVD that never got issued in a higher-def format.

they sell on ebasy cos they see too many people going in with cameras and phones checking the prices. these people spoil it for collectors as they just buy and sell on at stupid prices. i dont blame charity shops selling on ebay. they should get more money for the games and this more money goes to charity and not youtubers pockets

Near the end of their "Naff age", but before they'd became "Retro cool", I bought shedloads of Gameboy carts at 1, 2 and 3 quid a pop from charity shops. I also got a fair few tatty Gameboy pockets at 10 to 20 quid each. I'd thoroughly clean the main board and cartridge slot of the GBP's, usually replace the burnt polarizers on the screen and fit a backlight kit, then re-shell them into new aftermarket casings,. The game cartridges would get stripped, cleaned, a new battery soldered on if it had one, and if the labels were tatty I'd find the original label artwork and print out replacements on sticky back paper using one of the colour laser printers at (my then) work. I'd sell the refurbished GBP's on eBay, they'd usually make £50ish with a couple of games. With eBay listing fees, I never really made much money from doing this, but it felt nice to give a handheld that some 12 year old kid had battered the cr*p out of a new lease of life, then get it into the hands of a 25+ year old who'd treat it with a little respect. Considering I must have bought 40 or 50 Gameboy Pockets over the years, it's odd that I only kept 2 of them. One of them is one I built in full size Gameboy colours with a backlit screen kit fitted, and the other is a high end build that a friend of a friend asked me to sort out, then they backed out after I'd ordered all the parts. 🤨. It's pure white with classic Gameboy black and purple buttons, an IPS screen, gorilla glass screen cover, upgraded speaker and voltage regulator, a USB C charging board, and lithium polymer battery. It's a really nice toy, and the modern screen (slightly larger, high contrast, backlit, and without the "low refresh rate" image smearing issues) removes the one part of a Gameboy that hasn't aged well, but I don't think this ones worth what it cost to put together, so I've kept it.

When the download libraries were starting i knew that was the best time to buy any outstanding best titles suitable for kids and family members below teen years was to be bought asap as future investment. This was 10 years ago, glad i kept them all instead of trading them in now, as trying to find the best ones at a low price is too hard now and charity shops just have the rubbish uninteresting titles out.

I picked up about 40 immaculate PS1 games about a year ago for less than a tenner, now part of my collection on the shelf, got some bangers that day, including Pandemonium, GTA London, Worms Armageddon, Rayman 1&2, Tomb Raider trilogy, Driver 1&2, all in good nic with manuals, also scored the Mario Allstars Wii collection complete in box, Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros, Animal Crossing, all in good condition with manuals for a pound each a few weeks ago, also find decent 360 and DS games quite often. Switch games will start showing up soon, I got a sealed copy of Super Luckies Tale on Switch for a fiver the other day, only to realize it's a download code and not an actual game lol, so stupid. They also had two Wiis with wiimote plus controllers for a score, so I grabbed them both and soft modded them, they are superb for 240p virtual console games on a CRT, plus some banger WiiWare titles like the Rebirth series, Castlevania Rebirth looks immaculate on my 36 inch 4:3 Thomson CRT TV in 240p.

I gave up selling all my old games - dealing with entitled, clammy handed collectors and resellers on ebay became offensive to me and I didn't need the money - so I gave them (filled my car boot) to a charity shop in my town so the money could go to the Alzheimer's Society. N64, Megadrive and my entire PS1, PS2 and Neo Geo Pocket (I actually got most of the Neo Geo pocket stuff heavily discounted when I worked for Dixons) games collection. New space, fresh start etc. I assume they sold them on ebay. I'm losing interest in games to be honest now, I think the ease of emulating and other hobbies are killing it for me rather than availability and prices. It's pointless trying charity shop no2 because they are all sending rare stuff to central offices and being sold on ebay

Tbh i just do emulation these days, ive still got an xbox360 and a massive game collection, but i rarely use it. Also a lot of idiots on ebay now that will sell scratched discs that don't work coz there that desperate to make a couple quid. I bought the spectrum which is cool, and will probly buy more of the retro mini computers/console at some point. Ive finished buying physical copies of games myself, but good luck to all collectors out there 👍

Sheffield is full of charity shops, we even have a thrift district but its exactly the same.. fifa , wii resort, tigar woods. Maybe when our generation really starts to drop off thats when you wont be able to move for games. Sorry to sound morbid

Hasn't aged well at all tbh, many PS1 games have aged like milk, contrary to the N64, which has aged like a good bottle of wine, some PS1 games have aged beautifly though, like Hogs of War, Spider, Felony 11-79, Pandemonium, Wipeout 2097 et cetera.

People are more savvy now. They know the value of tehir games, so prefer to go to dedicated retro gaming stores or ebay so they can get the highest prices for their old games instead of giving them away for free. They'll only give away the titles with no value like Fifa.

Charity shops - The Home of FIFA. How hilarious would it be to find a trove of import JP Saturn games on a CD rack?!?!?!? Charity shops have long dried up for bargains - pretty sure they get them valued using ebay searches and dump them on there.

To be Honest Charity Shops get a really bum deal these days, they are constantly get slagged off for not having ultra cheap games as they are now matching CEX prices or selling on eBay. Good for them I say as the more money a Charity raise the better for them in my opinion.
@Wobble2007
@Wobble2007 29 күн бұрын
The money goes into the pockets of the people that run the charities mate, a very small percentage of money actually goes to any good causes with mainstream charities, thrift stores used to be about bargains, as soon as they lose that, they will die with the rest of retail, just a cold fact I'm afraid.
