Designing physical modeling really goes into a few key categories depending on what you’re designing but a general description is Exciter, membrane, and resonance. There’s specific cases depending on whether it’s supposed to be a wind or string, etc. (think abletons tension). The practical approach is to take short sine waves, white noise plucks, and key tracked comb filters that create percussive resonances. Then convolution verbs will liven it up. You can also used detuned fm at really short and fast times to create specific dings and donks. Thanks @databroth for teaching me PM. But no, it sounds realistic but it sounds like it’s own thing. Will not replace samples lol. There’s also a new synth called Mondus that’s pretty bad ass.

The point of REAPER coming barebones is to let you fully customize it from the ground up, Ableton is the only DAW I like the stock samples/plugins from, which is why I keep it to get the creative juices flowing when I hit a wall. My REAPER workflow took 2 years to get right with all my midi gear. Now I can make a beat almost without looking at the monitor...its a bit like having 8 MPCs chained together (using 2 Novation Launchpads and 2 Control XLs) alongside a variety of softsynths (Arturia and U-He).

The SWAM plug-ins are really incredible. Saw an extended demo and was just blown away. The price point is really high though. I just know of one guy that owns one and it’s just amazing what he can do with it. Recreating brass section stabs like on old samples wasn’t possible without performers before but now with this and midi you can reproduce it. You’re right about some warmth though but it’s not bad. Some soundtoys and a touch of RC20 and reverb can make it sound like you lifted a perfect sample. Really hope you get this to do a critical review. I think you’d be pleased…so pleased you’d be gooning out on rhythm.

You can use Reason as a VST in another DAW, and if used intelligently, it's one of the most advanced modular enviroments there is. I bought Reason Lite for about $50, years ago, which can still load all the latest Reason synths and effects, then be used as a VST in you DAW of choice. You can demo them for about a month and many of the more expensive ones can be purchased via small regular payments. One of the best purchases I ever made and Objekt is getting downloaded for demoing later today:)

um that software Ben is using is mid compared to most kontatk libraries these days. SWAM is outdated. If you want to get into Sample Modelling the company called Acoustic Samples has everyone beat by a long long shot too. Much more expensive but worth it 100 percent. They have the best Saxaphones library, Best Trumpet library and best woodwinds now too. You do not need keyswitches. I would not use SWAM , i dont find it sounds good
