I'm a Playstation gamer this is both good and bad for us. Good because I'm now able to play 1st party games on my Playstation console. There are many Xbox games that I like examples are Ori and The Blind Forest, Ori Will of the Wisp, Gears of War franchise, Forza Horizon 5 (one of the best racing games), Quantum Break, Ryse Son of Rome and Sunset Overdrive. Bad because healthy competition is needed for both platforms.If Xbox goes to a third party as a publisher. I'm worried about the PlayStation's complacency.

It's not even as simple as that, unfortunately. They DO make a billion a year on it, but they spend EVEN MORE than that MONTHLY on it too. It's a HUGE money eater for them right now. They would have to have 60-80 million subscribers in order to make enough money monthly, and that's just not going to happen.

Competition is important for better quality assets; it’s why when best buy got rid of their videogame memberships for discounts gamestop stopped with the good discounts and amount of points earned per purchase. Same deal will happen with sony once it’s long-time competitor fades out. As long as sony doesn’t have competition they won’t have the need to disperse good quality games or deals cause people will still buy their low quality, but expensive products due to bad consumer habits.

Xbox makes about $15B a year in revenue (not profits) With the cost of ABK, Xbox will be in the red (aka not bringing in profits) for many years. AAA video games costs as much as summer blockbuster movies nowadays, $250+ million. To recoup the cost of multiple AAA games per year, Game Pass needed hundreds of millions of subscribers all paying full price. I agree with SupaNova. Phil got a call from his boss who was wondering when Microsoft HQ would get the money back they earmarked to Xbox to buy ABK. And Phil's boss didn't like the answer he got. I 100% believe the decision to go 3rd party came from above Phil. I've been thinking for years that Xbox was going to abandon hardware and go full subscription streaming (along with Game Pass PC) when it became viable. Publishing their games on the other consoles goes along with that.

Xbox had a failed business model from the start. I can already play most of their games on PC so there is no need for an Xbox. I stopped playing Call of Duty since CoD 3 and never cared for any installments afterwards. I don't care about game pass because I'd rather pay full price if I really like the game and want to support the devs. Otherwise I will wait for a sale. So Xbox can buy all the game studios they want, I don't care because I will most likely be able to play them on PC.

Operating costs for all the studios under Microsoft would be anywhere from 4 to 6 billion annually, just to operate. Run the math in 20,000 employees at an average of $100,000 a year plus equipment, buildings, insurance, bonuses, utilities, sick leave, training, upgrading technology etc. It's a lot of money just to keep the lights on!!!

Shortly thereafter in 2002, Okawa DIED, and as part of his last will and testament, he not only FORGAVE the debts that Sega OWED HIM, his $730 MILLION worth of stock options that he had collected over DECADES of service to the company WERE RETURNED BACK to Sega (essentially managing to bring Sega BACK from being on the BRINK of financial insolvency practically overnight).

As always, you state your case with your usual flair. I game on Xbox and I agree with every point you have made. Like you, I knew this was the likely outcome when Phil Spencer teased it all when unveiling the Xbox Series X/S, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Game Pass at the start of the current generation. The gaming console market is small when compared to the whole gaming market which spans games consoles, PC, mobile phone/tablet and the emerging handheld gaming devices. Sales of gaming consoles have been stagnant for almost two decades now. The cost of developing games, especially AAA titles, has risen dramatically over the same time frame. Sony, Microsoft (and to a lesser extent, Nintendo) have to figure out how to grow revenue (and more importantly grow their profits) in a saturated console market where game development costs are increasing. Microsoft and Xbox want to be the dominant player across the whole gaming industry. It is obvious to me that to achieve this goal, Microsoft and Xbox have pivoted from a console centric business model to a gamer centric model where gamers can play the games they want to play using whichever device they want (PC, console, mobile device, handheld gaming device) all under the Xbox brand. Sony has yet to figure out exactly how they intend to address the changes that are occurring within the gaming industry and how gamers are wanting to play the games that they want to play. Sony has made tentative steps to move away from their predominantly gaming console centric approach by releasing some PlayStation games on PC. I ask myself one simple question… Of Microsoft and Sony, which company has the bolder, more ambitious, more disruptive plan to address the challenges within the changing gaming industry and grow their presence within the industry? For me, I see this as a big win for Xbox and I am genuinely excited to see what Xbox has planned for the future.

I'll just put a caveat on your take "Xbox would be extending by going third party"... that is if people buy their games, and that entails for MS to actually invest more money into making them, not less. What I've seen since the advent of game pass is their games becoming smaller, formulaic (all those survival building games), uglier, etc. We've seen what Halo and Forza Motorsport turned into. I'll reserve my judgement but MS games need a radical change in management, and with Booty staying as president of game content and studios I don't see that happening, and it doesn't bode well.

I maintain that people are overblowing this and overreacting. In a pure business sense, you can not have a Loss Leader like Gamepass and their hardware and grow in size. The amount of money they have literally been pissing down the toilet must be staggering. I would love to see the numbers since Gamepass started. Giving away games that have cost MS upwards of $500 million for free is mind blowing! Investors want growth, and even more profits regardless of breaking 1 Trillion in market cap. I have a feeling ABK and Bethesda games are going to all still land on PS and Nintendo, if the switch or switch 2 can handle it. MS will still make consoles, will still offer Gamepass but will have to either significantly increase pricing, or change the structure of Gamepass all together. I don't think every big game will be DAY AND DATE. Think like EA on Gamepass now. Games come months later, but whatever, still in there! MS will cherry pick the best of the best that studios are working on for True Exclusives and the rest of the nonsense and legacy IP will be on all platforms. Cloud this and that and they want Almost all games on all platforms and screens.

Phil spencer already came out and said if xbox game pass PC doesn't get 100mil users by 2027 Microsoft will leave gaming. ive been a fan of xbox since it came out and i hope they leave microsoft after the 360 has been nothing but a negative for gaming, game pass is a Trojan horse Microsoft doesnt want players to own there own games and to be dependent on there cloud storage bullshit for gaming. we shouldn't allow one massive corporation thats already a monopoly in software buying everything in another genre Going third party wont save them either because buying up activition-blizzard was a big problem and one of the issue the FCC tried to bring to the judge, its not like buying any of the studios help them because all the games suck or mediocre. Personally i think the judge was bought and paid for, Claiming Nintendo isnt a competitor is bullshit and there is no reason Microsoft should've been able to purchase another massive gaming company
