STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS, COURTESY OF JASON ZDORA (see his video here: • How to use NAM Neural ... )
NAM Colab page with "Easy Mode" script already loaded and ready to go:
colab.research.google.com/git...
Training .wav file: drive.google.com/file/d/1v2xF...
Profile loader VST3/AU: github.com/sdatkinson/NeuralA... (download the installer)
Jason Zdora's video on how to profile with NAM:
• How to use NAM Neural ...
Step by step how to use NAM "Easy Mode"
1- Download the "V1_1_1.wav" here: drive.google.com/file/d/1v2xF...
2- Play that audio file through your amp rig and record the output. Amp only! No Cabinet, unless you are wanting to use the entire signal chain including mics, which eliminates using IR’s for the most part for cab modeling)
3- Export your recorded wav file as 24bit 48khz, IN MONO, and name it "output.wav"
4- Make sure your output.wav is EXACTLY the same size as V1.wav (this has to be sample-perfect or it wont work)
5- Go to the Google Colab website colab.research.google.com/git...
6- Click on the folder icon (left side of screen under the spyglass and the "{x}" icons)
7- Drag and drop your audio files (V1.wav and output.wav) into the blank area at that opens up when you click on the folder icon
8- Scroll down to "Step 2: Installation" and click on the "[ ]" inside the darker box inside of the Step 2 area. Should see a bunch of script stuff fill the page. Scroll down.
9- Underneath "Step 3: Train!" find the 2nd darker box. If you want to increase the epochs, find where it says "run(epochs=100)" and type in whatever you want. "run(epochs=1000)" is great but remember that it takes about 8 seconds per-epoch so plan accordingly.
10- Click on the "[ ]" inside of Step 3 to begin running the training. If you see a red "play" button, find the error message below and report it on the user group. If its running correctly, you will see a loading bar filling up over and over with an Epoch number in front of it.
11- When its done, you will see a new folder in the folder section called "exported_models". Open up the sub-folder that has 6 different files in it. Right-click and download "config.json" and "weights.npy". Its a good idea to put them both inside a folder on your computer and name that folder after the hardware you modeled and the date you made the model or other details (easier reference if you make multiple versions).
12- Download the NeuralAmpModeler.vst3/AU using the installer and put it in your VST3 folder or if on a mac the AU will install where it needs to: github.com/sdatkinson/NeuralA...
13- Start up your DAW and load up NAM Snapshot (folder is called "Steve Atkinson" in your VST3/AU finder).
14- Click the "Choose Model" button on the GUI and find the folder with your config.json and weights.npy files (the newest version of NAM just saves as “model.nam” which is the file you load into your plugin)
15- Add an IR after the NAM Snapshot plugin
16- Enjoy If you want to adjust the epochs or the number of channels run(epochs=X, stage_1_channels=Y) Where: X = 100 for quick and decently accurate X = 1000 for slow and very accurate Y = 12 for lightweight VST3 CPU cost but less articulate Y = 16 for typical kinda heavy CPU cost (this is the default) Y = 20 for very heavy CPU cost but more articulate

Thanks for all your work on ML tools for amp/pedal modeling. I had tried to do that unsuccessfully about 5 years ago but LSTM models implementations where not mature and I was a total noob.. I just had one idea to improve modeling fidelity of the frequency response while keeping the computation cost as low as possible: instead of using a LSTM network for both the nonlinearities and the impulse response, why not try to split at least partially the work between an ML model and a simple FIR convolution (in post)? The learning method could work as follows: 1. Identify the overall IR by deconvolution on a very low level sweep or random signal (to avoid distorsion). This IR could be as large as wanted, but smthg like 256 taps is a minimum. 2. Inverse the filter (tricky, but doable also by deconvolution, but need some smoothing to avoid over amplifiyng some frequencies) 3. The inverse IR filter to the captured output,( it works like a pre emphasis filter before machine learning). 4. Carry out the neural net training on the filtered signal. 5. In the plugin, chain the ML model with the identified convolution filter (IR from step 1). This method is close to what classic modeler do to match the voicing of the amp while the non linearities are modeled as wave shapers or non-linear differiential eqs. I had implemented a multistage distortion in a pedal based on Teensy 3.6 micro-controller and I was using the same method: a small pre eq as a short FIR then up to 4 stages of nonlinear models with inter stage filtering and finally a 256 tap FIR. With some optimisation it was using about 60% cpu (+eq and compressor/noise gate), the rest being used for the TFT display and interface. If you want to have a look the code is on github , project name TeensyDist (just a personnal proof of concept, so not very clean)

This is an exciting time to be a guitarist. I’m 65, and have been playing 54 years. I’ve made my own pedals (thanks to Craig Anderton for planting the seed), and currently build guitars and make pickups. Back in the 70s I remember asking my band’s sound guy, who was going to NJIT for an electronics engineering degree, “what if we run our guitar through a computer and have it change the sound?” I don’t think sampling or digital audio was a thing yet, but it made sense to me. He explained it’s possible, but computers were too slow for real time processing. Now my iPhone can run AmpliTube and record multi track audio in GarageBand. Just a few decades later. I record using amp plugins. I own a modeling amp. It’s a “lowly” Marshall Code100, but I get great tones out of it. I like mixing up amp parts. A Marshall preamp with an AC30 power section, and maybe a 4x12 cab. For that reason I like the idea of a Fractal better than a Kemper. With the Fractal you can create something new. The Kemper and other such Impulse Response profilers is making a recording. You can tweak it a bit, but it’s still a capture of a particular amp. The thing I see with younger players these days is they don’t try to find their own sound. They copy their heroes. You don’t hear a guitarist and think “I know who that is!” just from their tone much anymore. People pick up a Strat and they just use those typical Strat tones. They end up sounding like SRV or something. But listen to Hendrix and Blackmore. Or later Jeff Beck. All three are playing a Strat. And they don’t sound the same. So my worry about people buying amp profiles is they won’t take the time to learn how to sound original and everyone will sound more alike than they already do. And then the next Hendrix will come along.

That's kind of my beef about the whole culture now of everything being a Klon, TS, Plexi, etc. and also the culture of Signature everything. Jimmy Page didn't have signature anything and created some of the best music ever, in my opinion. That was always the excitement for me.

Same here! I’ll turn 65 in a few days. Started playing guitar when I was 11 or 12. It is an exciting time indeed, but somehow, I miss the simplicity of the past when GAS was something you would put in your car. With all these great options, is music really better today? Thanks to Spotify, music is free and artists under appreciated. I guess I am getting too old for this s**t.

Totally agree! Youth guitar players not sounding original. IMO the old guitar heroes' sound (like Hendrix, Blackmore, Gilmoure, Brian May, etc.) were not 'perfect'. They concantrated their solo sound and their rhythm sound were not the best. But they became original this way. Youth players want to sound 'perfect' in every frequency but it leads there, they sound average.

Thanks for the video Brian, I totally agree with you that this seems like the new wave. I got the Tonex Capture and have the ToneX pedal on order ... kinda wish I would have seen video this first. I do like the all in one solution and ease of use of the ToneX system. I think profiling is very cool but I do still like the idea of modeling a little more. Profiling is great for snapshots of sounds, especially in cover bands where this seems like a dream come true. But I like to fiddle and having to re-profile my amp because I want more gain or mids means I would still prefer a Tube Amp or a Helix type solution. More Mr Scary in future videos please :)

Just wanted to say that Tone Hunt is the primary source for NAM models, not Tone Hub. I believe Tone Hub is a reference to a different piece of software. It's nice to see your endorsement for NAM, as I think it is indeed apart of the revolution of guitar (and other) tones, as it is not limited to just guitarists, but mix engineers as well since compressors, preamps, etc are being modelled as well.

By the way, it is also possible to build a fully virtual amp / pedal from an original schematic using LiveSpice (like a virtual breadboard) and then convert it to a NAM or Proteus profile... This could help bringing new tones ideas starting from the components / schematic to the ML world.

Right now, these profiles are like IR captures: only one setting of controls is represented. For people who don't like turning knobs, that is fine. For people who like to sculpt their sound, it simply isn't there yet. For example: an SVT profile without selectable mid frequency is severely limited.

Excellent video and attitude to new stuff, competition and challenge. Will I try it? I wouldn't make my own profiles...I don't have anything be worth profiling. I'd be inclined to try other people's profiles but would I be tempted to just grab a profile of something known, famous, already available in an "amp in a box"? I do like your pedal sample sales idea: lateral thinking.

If I ever got around to using my DAW at all, I'll probably download this. At the moment, I'm just happy to plug my guitar in & play. I prefer real amps & pedals at the moment - not because they sound any better, but because any time I turn my laptop on (my job doesn't require a PC) my day is completely shot. Everything about it is a huge time suck. BUT, if a person were using a guitar for something close to "work" &/or hat the computer on all day, this would would be THE way to go, especially at the price point.

Idk Brian, Call me old school, or maybe its something in the youtube compression. It's hard to tell what I am actually hearing without being in the room. Having said that, I personally prefer the sound of your bravado pedal and guitar. I prefer a live amp sound even mic'd and compressed through KZbin. However NAM was close to the bravado when volume driven on the guitar control. But it lacked the warm tone with the volume rolled off. All the Modelers were pretty good, but when the amp, guitar and a pedal sound that good. The simplicity is GOLDEN. No interfaces no computers no screens. As I said call me old school but a great guitar, solid amp, and whatever drive you decide to use is golden. The tone is in your hands Brian, the tone is in your emotion, the tone is in your touch. Whether you use a modeler of any kind you STILL absolutely have to have an outstanding high grade amplifier to sound good. It doesn't have to be fancy but it has to be solid like any old/new single channel tube circuit. The analog response and how the amp "feels" with whatever guitar and whos' hands are touching them just cannot be "recreated or simulated" 100% accurately. Just my opinion and my experience as I said, I am just an old school musician who keeps the rig simple and pulls "tone" my tone out of the amp and guitar and how I feel at the time. So.e nights I sound great other nights it could be shit. No amp modeler is going to "fix" my off nights. Lol I suppose they are pretty cool compared to what was available when I was a kid. But I tried all sorts of gear and modelers and pedals etc etc... what do I come back too? My 50s strat, single channel early 80s marshall and MAYBE 3 or 4 pedals depending on the guitar I use and the venue I play in. No Brian I am sorry to say although I own some wampler pedals amd love the ones i have, they don't make the gig nights very often LOL, in all honestly maybe20% chance a wampler pedal will end up in the line up. I use my old boss stuff for the gigs because at live volume levels after 5 or 10 mins no one can hear the difference. LOL Just me my opinion and my 44 year old broken ears with permanent tinitis. Hahaha Thanks for the solid videos Brian

It looked like a pretty painful process to get a model of your specific amp and then load that model into the software. Also, both of them sounde3d like modelers. They sounded good, but it still has that modeler sound, which is okay, but I am starting to be able to recognize that sound. I prefer the way your Wampler amp sounded. I got to go back and find that video again. That thing sounded like perfect to me. But thanks for this video as I did not know about either of these free open source products. I use a Behringer Vamp3 and it also sounds like a modeler, and is now quite old. ...but I can still get some good sounds out of it. But I guess it is time to look into updating. You probably don't know how this thing works. You definitely can't really preserve a pedal You can only capture the tone of the signal chain and have a single aproximation of it with fixed knob positions. There will still be a place for modellers and real gear, I think. For instance you can create a new model of an amp which doesn't exist in real word. Whilst it's theoretically possible to create an artificial audio file sample to train NN you rely on physical gear 99% of the time to create a new profile.

I own and use ToneX and HX and haven't used a tube amp in decades, so it's not like I'm a luddite. With that said, I'm kind of apprehensive about where this is all headed. The amp/speaker is 1/2 of the instrument, and the primary source of tonal characteristics. At what point do manufacturers just stop producing tube amps altogether? How will guitar amplification (and, more specifically, guitar tone) evolve once the traditional source of the tonal character of the instrument is no longer available? Do base guitar tones even NEED to evolve anymore? Loved the Lynch intro, btw 😉

Brian, if the open source profiling programs are worth it, maybe companies like yours could look at building hardware controllers for the software? Desktop devices that look a bit like small amp heads? The guitarists load the software & profiles onto their computer/laptop and from then they use the hardware control, one that is quite familiar to them.... Could be a gateway device for those who have issues wrestling with tech?

Nam is pretty great and free. I use it daily. You need to get with Steve and design a pedal platform for it. I would buy it

I've used Modelers for ages, and welcome the advances in Tone Matching in its various forms. NAM looks very interesting, and I'll have to watch some videos on Proteus. Portable Modelers that can easily load and play Profiles/Captures is a feature that I hope can be added via a Firmware Update to units like HX Stomp, QC, etc. It's nice that we can play the sounds of Vintage Amps, Speakers, Pedals, etc., but what interests me most is the ability to morp and create new sounds.

Hi mr Wampler thank you for your work, i love your pedals and also love your videos. They're always inspiring to me. I actually use a Pinnacle deluxe V2 and an Ego in my pedal board and i'd like to ask you a question. I actually use a switcher in my pedalboard and i'm unable to use both switches on my Pinnacle. Do you think there's a way to use both of them with my switcher?

Already made the change to NAM from a bunch of other modeleres with alle desire to buy a product gone lol. Next step is building some sort of DSP pedal to run it combined with a class D amp.

Brian I'm sure you're the guy that ...can make a pedal than can host VST plugins ..in the style of Gig Performer ..one after the other so to build up chains easily at own discretion. This is what's gonna be the future in my opinion ....modelling is only left to those people who have a wide range of amps that want to carry them around easily while the complete chain prevails in terms of importance and there the amp model is only a slice of the cake. In your shoes I would start studying this idea closely 🙂

Yes, probably the future. Personally, I am happy with the Tonex pedal. If you want to be able to bring your sounds with you anywhere without having to carry a laptop computer, you’ll need to invest in hardware at some point.

True, but since it's open source it's only a matter of time before people start building standalone devices with the software pre installed.

I'm not sold on profiles for a couple of reasons (and I have a Quad Cortex, and Neural Amp Modeler installed on this computer). First it seems like profiles/captures, which are snapshots of a particular set of settings, are a lot like IRs taken with specific cabinets, speakers, mics and specific positions. Look at the rabbit hole created by the great IR hunt. We all search forever through 100's of IRs that don't sound all that different for that elusive perfect tone. It never ends. Profiles/captures may be the same only much worse because we'll be pairing 100's of profiles of amps at different settings with 100's of IRs, and none of them will ever sound like an amp in the room. The second reason is captures don't contribute to innovation - they're just capture what already exists, they don't create something new. I like the approach Mike Scuffham took with S-Gear, using digital technology to create guitar amplifiers that are something new, not just a rehash of something built 40 years ago. S-Gear in Quad Cortex would be a game changer.

I'm guessing that the future will be hardware platforms for running open source models and software. So instead of buying a pedal board like device made by, say, Line6, with Line6 software, running Line6 models and Line6 effects, you will buy a pedal board like device made by Line6, running some low level OS made by Line6 (with the option of installing your own), and on top of this you get some demo modules made by Line6, but you can go out and buy whatever model or software package you like and install it on your pedal board. In essence, these companies will start selling PCs in pedal board format, with foot switches and pedals.

I like the idea of NAM but it's still too complicated for me to really get into it. It would be great to see a company that rhymes with say line six to add support for the NAM models and their Helix platform.

Great video. But I am a bit suprised that Proteus does not match the frequency response as well. Did you use 44.1khz or 48khz for the capture/learning? For NAM 48khz is mandatory but by default Proteus uses 44.1kHz. Anyway, I think your video was a great intro to this revolution..

I tried this NAM plugin on the pc to play guitar quietly, but I have some serious trouble with crackle, and also some micro lag. Still trying to figure out why its crackling on a soundblaster zxr. The sound also degrades quite quickly after. also tried asio 4 all. might be because of all my sound devices causing a little interference. one thing for sure, not giving up on it. cos don't always like to get other equipment out when playing on a night.

The Wampler amp ruled them all. I got a kick out of the comparison with the Line 6 that sounded closer to the modelers but that's what I expected. Don't get me wrong they did sound good and if you can make it work....cool.

NAM for the win here. Meanwhile, I'm convinced that AI auto-adjust will eliminate the menu-diving now necessary with Fractal, et al. I just bought a new TV with AI auto-training/adjust and in 30 seconds ended up with the most glorious picture that used to take days of tweeking and retweeking. Though I'm a Fractal zealot...Cliff and co. are hereby on notice that AI is here to eliminate the time-suck of drop-down diving and constant tone audition to get us off the science-project and back to playing guitar.
