Those dvd's were mindblowing, I was in film school at the time and I remember being so excited by the potential of flimmaking between Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze (and films like Amelie and Fight Club and Eternal Sunshine as well). One note on this video, I'm pretty sure there's speed ramping going on in a few places to be sure the shots line up correctly. It's barely noticeable because we're already fast and loose with our sense of timing given the handheld camera and the reversed footage.

Yo 19:14 the way they wrote down “you killed me” and the camera zooming in is just perfect and mirrored too!

Oh snap I did not expect to see this legendary of a video today! I was almost half expecting Spike Jonze from the thumbnail and that would have caused my brain to ripple

I went down a Michel Gondry rabbithole a while back when Casey Neistat mentioned he was his favourite director in a podcast interview. I was familiar with some of his stuff (mainly Chemical Brothers & White Stripes) but was really surprised just how much awesome work he'd done. Awesome to see some of it picked apart in detail here!

When I had my first apartment in my 20's I purchased the Michel Gondry boxset and the Spike Jones at the same time. I knew Michel Gondry from a few music videos on MTV but the dvd boxset was the first time seeing this particular video and my mind was blown. I sat in front of the tv for hours watching just this video. Picking apart the sequence of events just like you guys did. The thing i think you should have spent more time on was the cross over when the note comes into frame. It's a pivotal transition and it half written 2 times on 1 sheet of paper so the zoom has to be perfect. Well close to it. Michel's videos are never perfect but make up for it in complexity of doing everything in camera. I do think that this music video is the most amazing music video he ever made. Thanks for bringing it back into my life in a different way.

Random, but I think Mark's hat is from Colo coffee, which is an awesome coffee company in Colombia!

For some reason when Chance was describing the personalities of the characters it made me think of Thelma & Louise - the episode where they pack their luggage for the trip, you can see that Louise is way more organized, put together, and Thelma is all over the place, but it is Louise who pulls the trigger and sets things in motion. I don't why, just seemed to make me think about those two moments from that film. Brilliant breakdown of Michel Goundry's work by the way!

I just love how deep you go into the process behind this video clip of Michel Gondry. Maybe get him on this channel one day? Video nerd tip: if you use video from an old digital source (DV tape or DVD) put on deinterlace to remove those lines.

Loved this breakdown! It was my first time watching the video and it reminded me of "Vortex" and of course, "Tenet." Thanks for such thoughtful content!

Wow this video was amazing - your insights and defining the terms you use as you go along is so interesting and makes your conversation so accessible to someone like me who knows squat about storytelling/direction, etc. Thank you!
