Is it really the last generation of true stars in #bollywood . Is the success of #pathaan and #shahrukhkhan pretty clear indicator that the likes of #salmankhan #akshaykumar #ajaydevgan and #aamirkhan are here to stay and failure is only monetary. Are #tamil and #telugu film fans just incomparable? Is bollywood truly back? I hope you like the video on Bollywood & Its Return

I honestly believe current gen actors are more western in their personality, the 90s stars feel like someone our own, because they remain rooted in their personalities. Don't think any actor can have a strong connect with the masses if their accent, behavior is more inspired form the west. We need someone like our own at that level to love and support. SRK, Salman, Ajay devgan are exactly that

being a teen, i feel like our generation has gotten so very critical of all actions and statements made by celebrities, it's like we're judging them each and every step of the way and the tiniest of stuff they say gets so controversial and out of hand. the current generation of actors are put under way more scrupulous scrutiny than the 80s and 90s stars. which is why i feel like it's gotten really hard for them to gather a fanbase as huge as someone like shah rukh khan

Well today they are more exposed than they were before. Social media, free gossip channels and cultural disconnect between celebrities and masses are the cause of it. People today can see these celebrities more clearly for what they are. That takes away that God like persona they used to carry everywhere before.

Ishana, I could not agree more! The current lot of celebrities get accused of being 'boring' or 'PR trained' in interviews but its all a result of a culture that is hyper critical, immediately ready to go on hate campaigns and trending hashtags to malign the individuals. Looking back at the free nature and candid way that people spoke back in the day, its more telling of the people watching than the actors. I also have to say that there are less distinct personalities for sure in the current lot vs the previous one but the point still stands

It’s mostly due to the change in media and the emergence of social media. The 90s actors were unreachable for us. We knew very little about them. This created an aura around them, which made them stars. Presently, we come to know everything about an actor even before his/her first movie has released. Thus, the aura of stardom is not developed.

The reason why there'll be less Mega Stars is because of OTT platforms. It isn't a bad thing since because of OTT people are getting better chance at acting. It is no longer limited to only certain people getting movie projects but many directors/writers/producers are experimenting with projects with new/fresh and underrated actors in their minds. It's the reason why we're getting more Coming of age, drama, family, thriller, action movies instead of just commercial movies, which at one point dominated bollywood industry.

Good video, Jammy! IMO, I think the actors launched after Hrithik Roshan (including Ranbeer and Ranveer) did not have that aura, machoism, or heroism, that SRK, Salman, HR, Akshay, Aamir, and Ajay still possess. These 6 actors are not only just brilliant performers, they look like a real hero on screen (especially in their respective genres). The mass hysteria which Hrithik received, sadly, will never be repeated (at least I can't see that craze for any actor of the younger lot). The craze which people have for SRK and Salman is unbeatable. The faith, which people have in the films of these actors is just too solid, and this faith has only solidified in the last 20-30 years! So, that's true --- this is the last generation of the Real Superstars of Bollywood! Ranbir Ranveer Shahid Ayushman RajKumar etc. are all good --- but they don't have that Aura of SRK, Salman, Aamir, Ajay, Akshay and HR.

The thing is Hritik maintained that aura till today. He kept getting better and better and gave us movies to remember for decades. True, I agree. Actors these days just look like normal Instagram influencer or like any other guy. There is no "true masculinity" to be displayed. The end of Pathaan actually hit me hard, I walked out of the theatre with a sad smile, asking my friend "What after them? Are they it? Why do I feel like they're talking about Ranbir and Ranveer!" I even told her that, if Pathaan starred anyone else, I wouldn't have watched it in theaters. The way I screamt and cheered throughout the movie! Damn! I fear that in the future, movies are just gonna be something you watch to pass time, especially theater visits are just gonna be a mere force of habit(once in week/ month occasion) or a family thing. I fear the absence of passion and the emotions we connect to these stars with in the future, I feel now what my mom felt watching Rajesh Khanna and AB movies. I'm glad the south fanbase is different, we still cheer the same for Vijay, be it Sethupathi or Thalapathy. But the fear and concern I had in the end of Pathaan was so real, it made me wonder if I'll ever watch a Hindi movie in a theatre, after 4 or 5 years, with the emotions I watch them with now.

The biggest reason is the internet. Before the internet age the only way you can consume entertainment media are Theatre, TV and DVDs, and there is something common in all of these. That is you see something staring someone (most commonly a Bollywood hero), and in course of time time you become attached to these people because you can relate to these few people's ( fictional heroes) and become attached to them. Fast forward to now, you have web series actors, tv actors, Hollywood actors, youtubers, tiktokers, politicians, cricketers, marvel super heroes, dc super heroes, anime heroes , just way to many choices to able to relate. In short, Bollywood actors now are facing exponentially more competition than the pre internet Bollywood actors.

in my theory, actors before 2000s had a branded image to them like amitabh bachchan/salman khan the angry young men, rajesh khanna/srk the charming romantic gentlemen, govinda/akshay kumar the kings of humor and comedy. These brand images made masses fall in love with them and enabled a loyal fanbase to be built. The newer generation actors are just actors, they focus more on the characters they play and their acting versatility (which an actor should do ik lmao) but this is what also makes the audience to see them as just actors and not idols to fall in love with. Right now only the south stars hold that brand image which is why commercially their films are doing so well rn.

Our choices changed - we want more diversity in content and want the director’s viewpoint to prevail more over star power , maybe less of the “actor” hype and more of the “director” hype. For instance apart from SRK , today I will any-day choose a Rajamouli film and will not even bother to see who are starring in it. It’s just that films today have rightly become more of a director’s media now .

The emergence of OTT and availability of loads of good content has made a lot of change. In the 90s content to be consumed was limited so the effect of the star people saw lasted longer. In this generation content is the king. That's why people will still storm in for a 'Christopher Nolan' movie but not a 'Christian Bale' movie. And the reason that made Hrithik Roshan an overnight star was the never seen before charm and physicality to the bollywood. He was a fresh thing. Vastly different from the pack. This surprise element is missing in today's stars. Everyone has six-pack abs. Everyone is just different version of a similar personality. I am sure if an Actor rises above the herd of similar looking men, A new star will be born again.
@spacemann1425

1. People will still, without a doubt, storm in for a "Christian Bale" movie. Solely because the man has made a name for himself based on his acting talent alone. There is no typical "Christian Bale movie". Since Christian Bale hasn't been typecasted. And irl, he's just like a normal guy, like the rest of us. But the guy is a star because of his acting skills. 2. People watching movies because of the story and the characters and not the actors or the stars is a great thing for films. 3. That's just not true. Every actor today is different in personality and acting expertise. Not only does every actor today not have a six-pack, having six-pack abs isn't a personality trait. What's even more important is that a lot of actors today are just great actors. What you actually mean to say is that they aren't your typical celebrities and are just like normal people. Because of course, Indians are obsessed with celebrity culture.

IMO, 90's stars were the last ones to have distinct and unique personas of their own. Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan, Amir Khan, Sanjay dutt, Govinda had mastered specific genres but yet, in rare moments, they succeeded in other genres too. Their movies had to run for 10-20 weeks to be called as hits and 25 weeks & above to be called as blockbusters. Thanks to the lack of media and access to their personal lives, we were restricted to their onscreen personality only. So we loved them through the characters they played rather than their real personality. And most importantly they had , even if minimal, courtesy regarding the fans. Today's "stars" have no personality in them. They are porcelain or polished mannequins straight out of a Bandra Kurla complex mall and a common man doesn't connect with them. Their ignorance for fans is also very apparent.

90's stars are so relatable, and i think isi liye aajkal kartik aaryan ko bhi sab pasand karte hai, wo ek great actor nahi hai, good looks bhi itne nahi hai fir bhi aap usse relate kar sakte ho, kyoki wo hamesha accept karta hai ki ha mujhe popular banana pasand hai, me jaan buch kar logo ke bich chala jata hu jisse wo mujse photo khinchva le 😅😅, interviews me bhi Hindi me jyadatar baat karna, aur bhi aage badhne ki chah rakhna, hamesha mummy papa ki baat karna... Ek dum middle class ambitious youngster ke jaise... Note : me nahi keh raha wo 90's ke star jitna bada banega hi lekin wo kafi relatable hai is baat se bhi denie nahi kiya ja sakta, and main important thing every normal person is rooting for his success (aap recently uske aap ki Adalat ke episode me comments ko dekh sakte hai, jyadatar logo ne paheli baar uska naam suna hai fir bhi sab ki same comment hai ki ye banda aage jayega)

To be fair, the stars of 90s had the opportunity to be sassy, bold and give straightforward answers in whatever little interviews and talk shows they did. Opportunity to showcase their personality. There wasn't a fear of riots starting if they said what was on their mind and a bunch of people got 'offended'. The stars of today have to be 'polished mannequins' coz that's how PR works. They have to be palatable for the masses. which means they have to all nice and sweet and politically correct all the time. One frown here and there, one irritated sigh, one frustrated response (eg taapsee pannu) and everyone is quick to brand them everything from 'rude' to 'terrorist'. Sanjay dutt openly admits to consuming narcotics substances in one of his interviews and it didn't suddenly become national news.. Can you imagine if someone did that today? The socio-political climate is just not conducive to actors being frank.

Hi Anmol, What a lot of us do not really understand is that the great Indian Cinema is all about reach. What we discard as so called " Mass Cinema" is where the reach is maximum and the 90s star did this on a regular basis. A Rajkumar Rao, no matter how brilliant an actor he is, will always be subjected to a narrow or niche mass appeal because frankly people go for entertainment in cinema not to be educated. Another thing which we tend to forget is the contribution of great directors, a Suraj Barjatiya for Salman or a Yash Chopra for SRK, these are not merely directors, they produced the complete Indian movie. Yash Chopra is known for being the king of Romance but if you do a dichotomy of DDLJ , it had everything, a travel adventure, timeless romance, family bonding and an action packed climax. That's why the Khan's are irreplaceable. You need to reach the heart of the masses, you need that vision.

What I think that there are 3 main reasons : 1. If you look at the earlier films , you will find that whether it's an action film, drama, family or romance , one thing that has always been dominant in them is emotion. People used to feel connected with those feelings , today's generation thinks practically, they aren't considering any actor as God, they're very clear in their minds that these are only actors & acting on a stage , and they don't have to be mad about them. 2. In today's time , the story of films is such that every actor has fans in different categories , for example some actors are liked by young people, some have a crazy fan base in between girls/ women , and some are liked by our parents , but when we talk about srk and sk , we see there's no such category here, people of every age , every gender are their fans . 3. Social media plays a very important role indeed. It gives us opportunity to see them as a normal next door man rather than a mysterious quite charming man who appears only on cinema and we don't know almost anything about him. Everyone seems to be a professional critic nowadays. Last but not the least , I always wonder , what could be the reasons that no actress has ever had such a strong fan base I the history of Indian cinema ? Please make a video on this .

What I personally feel awe of is the depth these superstars imbibe. I look at SRK, Amitabh Bachan, Aishwariya Rai, or Madhuri Dixit, there is a journey they have travelled, and that life lived has given them depth and mystique. I am not necessarily talking about struggle that they have done in the industry, but a real human connection they bring in their performances and personality which holds our attention. The new generation just doesn't have that. They really seem like kids, too relatable. Except maybe Deepika, I don't think Bollywood has any new-age stars to give.

I am not saying this POV is wrong but judging someone just because they have had less hurdles than others is a bit unfair. Even if someone is a star kid (I am not talking about all the star kids) he or she has had their own set of successes and failures. Vicky Kaushal had access to movies but being the son of an action director did not in any way made the process easier for him. Even though Alia Bhatt was given a big break even she had to prove her mettle constantly for audience to accept her. When the news broke that she had been casted for Gangubai there was so much trolling. PS- It's just my personal opinion that everyone have their own share of struggles. I would appreciate anyone who has done hard work and deserve to be where he or she is irrespective of their background.

@@seemonjena659 I completely agree with you that everybody has reached a certain point in their career owing to their own share of struggle. Each one of them. But my point is talking about distinction between actors and superstars. Maybe it's because I have seen them growing up, superstars that I have mentioned seem almost otherworldly to me. And that's because they bring something magical, almost divine to their performance and celebrity. I believe SRK calls it "adaigi". New age stars have talent, a whole lot of them. Khalid's dead body was in the operation table when they snatched his face to swap with Sourav. So, this is not a good theory, should pay attention to the movie more. Although what they can do is - what if Tiger a.k.a Sourav is not dead by the end of WAR but is found alive by the villain gang or something. That'll become interesting. Imo, I would rather have someone else be the antagonist of War 2 (Jim & Kabir's friendship story will be worth watching on the big screen, I don't think it was hinted at for nothing).

Despite pandemic phases with lot's of exposure of regional/international contents through OTT, the star worshipping culture and audiences rooting for them hasn't yet changed, especially in Southern India Recent avg flicks like varisu, thunivu, veera simha reddy and waltair veerayya all these have huge hits! I think more than contents, it's the stardom which is the toughest thing to sustain for long and southern stars are able to do that! Don't take me wrong, but it's the trust built among the fans with their larger-than-life mass images.. now, Srk has brought that phase with pathan, which is the reason it's still doing well, even in non-holiday!

Well Audience is the biggest reason for downfall for stardom in Bollywood. They demanded actors to move away from rom-com and larger than life movies to social drams and thrillers and biopics. As a result, actors focused on their character rather than focusing on their image. But South audience have always wanted their actors to make larger than life movies as a result the actors their never lose the stardom. U see the biggest reason why films Like KGF and Pushpa suceeded in North, because they wanted to hero worship why Actor like Rao, Khurana etc didn't provide. But Bollywood are returning to the trend of hero worship with Paathan and audiences have accepted him. Its just masses need hero worhip, and Bollywood listened to few intellectual and lost their way

Loved the video and content. IMHO it's definitely got to do with the overabundance of social media presence of the actors. Earlier, the insight into the lives of the "Stars" was limited. So there was an aura around the actors. We wanted more of them. And hence, we used to swarm the movie theatres to get a dose of our favorite stars. However, in the past decade and a half, we've been exposed to the real lives of the film industry. It's so evident that they do not lead "normal" lives. They live in a different world altogether. We're also seeing their real personalities through one interview or the other. Larger than life parties, drugs, promiscuity, etc. etc. is in front of all of us. SSR's death and the unravelling of the circumstances also didn't help matters. Thus, there's no more aura or mysticism around the lives of the stars. Having grown up in the 80s and 90s on Bachchan saab's movies and then SRK, Aamir, etc., I used to believe that they are patriotic and honest and strong like the characters they used to portray on the screen. However, today we know that what the actors do on screen has no bearing to how they actually lead their lives. We see them saying don't smoke or drink alcohol or do drugs on screen and then we see them drunk and dancing in parties. That's why they aren't deemed as stars.

In today's time, we are overwhelmed with content from across the world. So no one is craving for any actors anymore. Hence for an actor, one film works and others don't. But the 90s was different. The thing I feel is that people are more exposed to information about the stars themselves. There is no more delusion about who their favourite actor is.. whether he plays a hero or a god , one good scandal is enough to put a dent in the mystical trust the fan had with the actor and I think its a good thing. Blind admiration from someone is a dangerous tool in the hands of an artist with ill intentions and from an actor's point of view they'll still get all the money and less creepiness and stalker vibes.

I believe this is because not enough time has passed. Once time passes and television channels start broadcasting 2000 era movies in their channels instead of Sholay, K3G re-runs, for that generation of kids/young adults Ranbir/Ranveer and others from the same batch might be the heroes. Once us and more of the generations of people who grew up watching Big B SRK Hrithik whittles and dies, their stardom might dim too. As long as nobody keeps forcing their choices down to their descendants. Their records and achievements will be there courtesy of the internet, but let enough time pass, the batons of these stars might pass on to new generations too. That hasn't happened yet because enough time has not passed. Too soon to expect such results. But we can keep hoping to get a new age SRK, Aamir from these young guys!!

OMGGGG I was just thinking about this yesterday, it's almost as if you read my mind. What I feel is that the actor-fan dynamic has changed. Earlier, the only interaction with fans would be through interviews, either on TV, radio, newspapers, magazines and very rarely would a VERY lucky person get to meet the actor personally. This created a sort of mystery around the actor, and that eventually translated into making them stars, I feel. Now, with so many platforms where actors can interact with their fans, that sort of curiosity has died down somewhere, because the information is just available, it's not just word of mouth, it's literally there. Plus, the actors earlier would somehow feel like our own, it's just something I can't put a finger on, but they felt more relatable, more organic in their approach. Today most things are dealt with as per their PR strategy. The exposure too; today theatres aren't the only way to watch films, they're available on so many other platforms that people would rather watch films on these platforms than actually in theatres. Basically everyone has evolved, as they eventually would have, just as everything does.

I really think SRK is the greatest actor that India has ever produced because I belong to South Indian and I don't know a word in hindi during my childhood days but SRK has a magic that even kids can understand his emotions without knowing the language and TBH I saw other actors in the same age but neither I could understand the Hindi nor their acting. But because of SRK I started to understand Hindi now even after becoming a grown up and an avid Bollywood film lover. I still think there is no one who can act like him. In veer-zara as an old man the way he shivered his hands and the voice he changed to a weak old man's voice is flawless. In Om Shanti Om the difference he brought to 2 characters like a humble loving sensitive Om the aspiring actor, and cool stylish easy-breezy and little impatient Om the superstar is so amazing. Even though I didn't like Devdas for one reason as he keeps saying Chandramukhi "mai yahape aata hoon ki thume bardash karsako" many-a-times than the original but his performance was spectacular. I also think he is a versatile actor he did out and out comedy in Chennai Express and villain in Baazigar and Autistic in My Name Is Khan as a serious and strict coach in Chak de India and psychologist in dear zindagi and army officer in Mai hoon na he is not just great as Romantic actor I think few PPL try to take away stardom and good name from him as an incredible actor.
