No offense to the other martial arts since I also do some karate here in the Philippines but here in Cebu, Philippines yawyan fighters often beat karatekas and taekwando fighters. Yawyan is aggressive technique with fast and strong strikes with seemingly unending succession of strikes until the oponent is beaten. Even if the oponent is on the ground, yawyan fighters will continuosly give you head kicks without mercy. I would never miss with a ring fighter class in this system.

@white dead of course, different sports different adjustment. Even fighters from respectable styles like Boxing Muay Thai BJJ when they transitioned to MMA have to readjust their gameplans and techniques. The moment you start butt scooting in MMA like in a BJJ competition, you're asking for a knee in the face. The moment you start standing tall like in Muay Thai, you're giving the opponent free ticket for a double leg takedown....and so on

Big fan of Yaw Yan from the Philippines. The big moves are high risk high reward techniques used for combat sports. But during class the instructors stick to the basics. The training also depends on the students objective. Most casual students receive drills for self-defense. The combat sports practitioners receive a more ring based treatment from what I've observed.

I think Yaw Yan has techniques and principles that can/should definitely be applied to striking, especially for grappling and ground fighting in both MMA and street defense. The blocking and redirecting to create an opening for strikes, would be highly beneficial when dealing with a fighter or attacker with a wrestling background. Good stuff!

@@gcvdon7124 @GC VDON Sorry only just seen this. For starters there are indochinese kb styles like Khuh Khmer and Lethwei, Khun Khmer essentially being very similar to Muay Thai but with a greater emphasis on elbows and Lethwei being kind of like muay thai but bareknuckle and far more brawler like and with suplexes and headbutts thrown in. In Japan there's a style and sport called Shin Karate which mixes kyokushin with K1 kb elements. It is contested on a mat and I believe despite acting partially as a feeder for, and being similar to, K1 kickboxing it uses more kyokushin like scoring. There's western borne styles too, like Joe Lewis fighting systems, which combines elements of karate and above the waist kickboxing with bits from Muay than and other systems. It basically seems to combine karate and muay Thai kicking methods with some of the more boxing like head movement you saw in Old school above the waist kb. Similarly there's Bill Wallaces suoerfoot system which is basically Bill Wallaces slightly unorthodox approach to above the waist kickboxing, as opposed to what you'd be taught in a normal above the waist school. Dutch kb is fairly well known but despite often getting lumped in with it Lucien Carbin actually teaches his own unique system which draws form some of the same roots as Dutch kb (kyokushin, muay thai, boxing) but uses those roots quite differently. I believe he calls it Carbin All Style and its much closer to Muay Thai some ways with its use of clinch and, maybe elbows. He also does a lot of kick to punch combos and doesn't focus as much on just punch to kick combos found in regular Dutch kb. Also check out Tarung Derajat, an Indonesian style which combines boxing and Silat elements with tkd like techniques. I could list way way more but that should get you started.

@@inside_fighting Love the channel. I have researched Okichitaw myself, it is a re-created martial art; Much like Pankration (Greece), Glima (Scandinavia) Comhrac Bas (Celts)> and Bataireacht (Shillelagh stick fighting) There have IMO, been many liberties taken in the modern teachings and practice of these systems. I first trained some N.A.M.A or Native American Martial Arts in the late 1980s in Northern Ny with friends who were part Mohawk. It's really interesting how similar the hand patterns were to Yaw Yan, even in regards to forehand strikes hammer style backfists. Honestly it really makes me think there was some borrowing from Filipino Martial Arts, that went on. NAMA has way less focus on kicking, (although there were some basic lower line push kicks, soccer style/ groin and leg kicks). There were also some Aikijuitsu like or even basic Judo type throws, that reminded me of Okinawan Karate "Kubi wah", and "Kazushi waza" also I remember a headlock sacrifice throw used for a tackle defense. Anyway, good luck Ty for responding. Love the channel keep up the good work!

Yaw yan has a brother that only the elders know about, Philkadi - Philippine Karate Dijitsu. It's founder Master Nap Fernandes has a close friend and copractitioner Master Alexander Asperas, the founder of Philkadi. In striking, they were very similar as they formed and studied those techniques together. In practice, their main difference is that Yaw-Yan or Sayaw ng Kamatayan, focused more on striking and competition while Philkadi, Master Asperas who also trained in Japan, reaching a 9th Dan of Judo-Jujitsu and 10th dan Judo-Karate rank, focused on self-defense. Balancing itself into striking, grapling & weaponry. Philkadi members were actually, not allowed to join competitions but were very successful in the few times they did. Another thing unique not mentioned about Yawyan is their prefference use blocking movement as an attack. Philkadi uses the same technique but still prefers having delination between defensive and attacking movement, a less do or die approach.

my father says he was in the same class with napoleon fernandez in karate. he said napoleon wanted to make a filipino martial art. he studied other filipino martial arts and combining it with some karate. he knew the guy. my father was a philippine karate champion back in the day, in the 70s.

The chop kick is seen in kyoshin. Scorpion or rising hook kick is pretty rare. One KO I have suffered came from an accidental kick like this. The heavy arm sweep blocks are alot like Hung gar or Choy la fut.

Best kicking style is to combine different style of kick , muaythai, yaw Yan,Jeet kundo and taekwando

Very interesting. Not sure if you realise that chambering high for kicks to the thigh in muayThai is often used to fake high then land the low kick. You can find footage of Saenchai Sor Kingstar using the cartwheel kick that chops down from on high. As for the scorpion kick, Khun Somluck Khamsing used something practically identical to that effectively in the ring. Admittedly, few boxers have his level of technical superiority which is why he's one of the few who were able to use it without taking damage. When you have the level of technical ability seen at Lumpini or Rajadamnern, it's not that tge techniques don't exist, the issue is that only the elite nak muay are able to utilise the techniques without getting dropped. Regarding a defense based on timing, some of the greats like Samart Payakaroon were able to use such techniques effectively. However, such defenses rely to a great extent on superior reflexes. You can study tai chi push-hands and you'll see how important reflexes are. Some people talk about "energy" but if you look closely, it does rely on sensitivity and reflexes.

From what Ive learned, the Muay thai Association of the Philippines was founded by senior yaw yan instructors. During the 80's Muay Thai had difficulty entering the Philippines because the Muay thai fighters from thailand were being beaten by yaw yan fighters, Only until the early 2000's when the government of the Philippines gives funding to muay thai because muay thai is a known sport that this senior yaw yan instructors switched their gyms from yaw yan to muay thai so that they can get funding from the government. So this yaw yan instructors teach yaw yan under the muay thai name, join muay thai competions using yaw yan technics claiming to be muay thai

LOL no, yaw Yan originated from a Thai boxer who migrate in the Philippines and make his own gym called yaw Yan,yaw Yan is mix of kickboxing and karate, since kickboxing adapted the art of Muay Thai, yaw Yan become to similar to Muay Thai but there's no way yaw Yan can beat Muay Thai like how the heck would you beat the original art of yaw yan who came from Thailand?? Muay Thai is a arts to kill people that's why there's so many movements that banned in Muay Thai cuz Muay Thai is very aggressive art

I was lucky to know some Yaw yan and see how they trained in manila and Cebu another place, Also in Kyokushin, we have, rare kicks you don't know about. (i feel you weren't very knowledgeable about Kyokushin since you only trained a little) I'm not talking about the Brazilian kick. Also, when I was in Vietnam, I learn this rare style of kickboxing which has a traditional Vietnamese kung fu/French way of fighting, but it is hard to find. aside from that, I visited Cambodia to learn about Bokator they have little interest way of throwing short elbows. I didn't visit Thailand because I learn two styles of Muay Thai in the states by different kru and some Muay Boran. I wish I could have visited France to learn how savate , because I feel jkd savate is water down.

@@teovu5557 I think so. I'm not sure, but they were wearing Muay Thai shorts, and they threw muay Thai kicks, then other different kinds of kicks I have never seen before. Their English was limited, they only teach in the park. it was a very underrated martial art. Every time I go to Vietnam I find an unheard style, that interesting. just like I went to Hanoi I befriend another martial artist at a park because we jog in Keim lake every morning, I was training with him by doing breathing exercises and forms it's not like Kungfu. He shows me he can slap the pillar of the temple and then it shakes. it was an interesting journey tho.

Thats why you study multi martial arts and utilize to your advantage. Basically with no rules like a street fight. Because mma have limitations which some skills you cants use. Unlike in a real street fight, but you have the knowledge and utilize it during the moment. Thats what i do i blend alot of style into my fighting system. Open hand is good practice cus you can grab real fast n attack pretty fast.
