Devil's club (the spiky plant you grabbed) is a key medicinal ingredient for salves and teas. It is very spiky though! The last time I was in Haines was for Southeast Honor Band in 1995!

Those thorny things are called Devils Club.....appropriately 😂. That tent with the chimney is an Arctic Oven brand tent. Very good winter camping tent up here. Wish you had time to visit Seward. Maybe next time. Great video guys ❤.

I was very much hoping to see a big old bear sitting like a person eating a salmon. But bears up close are scary so hopefully you'll see some from the ferry. Who knew Haines is the cutest little town ever?

We have been looking for bears (and moose) every dang day. People act like you see them constantly up in AK, but we've barely seen any wildlife actually out in the wild. 😭 Eric and I must be much scarier in real life than we realize....

@@Theendlessadventurehaha! Go camping around Lake Tahoe in the summer and you'll see them for sure. We saw three! But less exciting when it's just a thin layer of nylon tent separating you.

So the spikey branch Eric grabbed is called devils club! They like to grow in boggy areas and are useful when trying to locate a spring or freshwater source. So sorry it got you! Those are weapons of the forest. Haines looks awesome, I’ll definitely check it out one day :)

We loved Haines. Along that same river, we saw two junior Brown Bears. I think that’s like a teenager :) A local told me that their mom kicked them out when she gave birth to two more cubs. They were scavenging along that river. Lots of gems in Haines…..like the campground along the shore that hosts crab nights. All you can eat crab for $20 and you must bring a side dish.

The water there is that teal green because the temp of the water is barely above 32 degrees which makes the waters full of life which amply feed the bears and eagles and other animals, as well as us humans. I live on the coast in So Cal. A more affordable place to live is often on a boat. Several families I know live on boats. In Ventura where I live we have an amazing fish and chips place in the marina made with angel shark. Probably the best fish and chips I’ve ever had in my life, and I’m a fish and chip enthusiast who grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The tents you saw with chimneys are called hot tents a with wood stove inside to heat it. The reason people are not the big fans of the eagles is that they will eat peoples pets. Here in So Cal coyotes eat our pets but usually only at night. Eagles hunt pretty much all day. But they are majestic. But difficult to live around 24/7 at times.

That pizza place reminds me of a BBQ place I go to before they bought their own building for their restaurant. When they started up they didn't have the money for their own restaurant, so they rented half of a gas station. You could get the food from their part of the gas station, but if you wanted something to drink, you had to go and buy something from the gas station.

lol 😂, outside the Valdez Harbor was a two masted wooden sailboat so big it couldn’t enter the harbor, the next day we were way, way out there on the cusp of actually going into the Gulf of Alaska (my father would never) and there it was, full sails out. Turns out the boat was brought up the Coast from California, the owner flew in on a Lear, spent the weekend and left for somewhere else, heading back home unless they received a new course or destination.

Fun vlog🙂🦅. LOVED the hammer museum. Dolerite⚒️ is a medium-grained intrusive igneous rock found in eg dykes and sills. It is much harder than a lot of minerals with a hardness of 6-7 on the Mohs Scale (quartz is harder). That is why it makes a good hammer-rock.. it won't chip and break so quickly. Even animals, especially moneys, use rocks as hammers. It was one of the first tooks we used in our evolution. Rocks make great peg hammers when camping!
