When I was primary pres a couple years ago, we had the children sing gethsemane, boy is it a powerful primary song. It is still my kids favourite song and my 5 year old twins want it sung at bedtime every night. Haha so glad it was included!!🎉

"His Eye is on the Sparrow" is a favorite in my area (Texas). I'm so glad it's in there! I'm excited to have more of the traditional Christian hymns. I think it will be important for the influx of people to have worship music that they recognize and that has helped them to feel the spirit in the past.

As a convert of 51 years, I always knew the gold imprint on our hymn book was organ pipes. When I first went to Salt Lake and saw the organ pipes in the Tabernacle, I recognized them straight away. When listening to all the new hymns this morning, I felt these are hymns for us, the Latter-Day Saints, in these latter days. They are so beautiful and look forward to more.

I am really excited to be able to have the music so that I can sing them at home. Thanks for this video, Jared. By the way…I have always thought that the new song is what we will be singing when the Savior returns. I am excited to learn it.

The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square for the past several years has been singing much of these hymns already during Music and The Spoken Word and I believe during General Conference. I listen to these in KZbin and play it in auto so as to hear the choir sing multiple times.

There is also Mark 4:22 Which tells us that the corrupt things done in the shadows will also be revealed to us (EBS?). But I am also looking forward to the additional scripture! I listened to the new hymns as soon as I learned about it, and the children's hymn "I Will Walk With Jesus" so touched me with the spirit, I just had tears rolling down my cheeks! I love the selections and "What Child is This" has always been a favorite Christmas carol. I thought the new song was as it was written in D&C, I guess we will wait and see.
@stevenodell76624 ай бұрын
Years ago I wrote a song based on the D&C reference. I called it THE LORD HATH BROUGHT AGAIN ZION. Recently I found out that Orson Pratt had written lyrics (only?) based on the same verses. I intend to donate mine to the Church. Mine has music with it. Both music and lyrics were inspired and written quickly.

I joined the church in 1976. The book was all blue, I think, but I remember seeing red ones, too. . There was a raised image of the tabernacle organ in the same blue or red color. I didn't know what it was, then, didn't give it much thought, I guess. A new green one came out in the 80s. By then I knew what the image in black was on the green cover. I've listened to the new hymns, they're nice. Easy to learn, nice melodies. I like the addition of the children's songs.

My thought on the “numbering system” of the new hymns is that it could be that the number in the thousandth place might be temporary just until it’s all changed over. Or something to that effect, because if you look at the new hymns, they have a few that fit in the Christmas/easter/holiday section which suddenly jumps to the 1200s rather than 1000. In our current Hymnbook, the Christmas and Easter songs are right around 200. Which if you drop the extra 1 at the beginning puts the new Christmas hymns in the same place as the current Christmas hymns. So it could be that they are essentially keeping the same numbering system as before and just temporarily adding an extra place value (1 at the beginning) to keep things organized and eventually to be dropped once the transition is complete. 🤷🏻♀️ just my own theory. But I also love the idea some people have said about it being in the thousands for the millennium. That is a cool thought, maybe it’ll follow the same system as before (as evidenced by the Christmas songs be 1200s) but with a thousandth place for the millennium.

The hymns we have and the new ones coming all have scriptural references. As we know, scripture is fulfillment of prophecy,.There are songs written even that the great composers had put to music from scripture. As scripture tells us even the Heavens are telling the Glory of God. Even nature itself praises the Lord He created it all. And everything knows his hand.
@janetcarlson49234 ай бұрын
You cant imagine how hard this task is! Going through that many songs! First they have to decide if it really fits our beliefs. 2nd, can we get copy rights? 3rd, can some words be changed to fit our beliefs (He is born is a good example as it has a few words changed from how I learned it) Then 4th translating kt to how many languages. Hymn # 1001 was the most requsted hymn. It used to be in the brown hymn book but was taken out. I would have loved having the songs from the Messiah but some are too long and many organist may not have the ability to play them.

In your opening comments, you mentioned hymn numbers starting with 1001, and saying there can't be 1000 hymns. There are already over 1000 hymns. If there are 330 in the green hymnal, Joel Hills Johnson has been on record for 150 years that he personally had written over 700 during his life, only two of which are in the green hymnal. The two hymns are #5, High on the Mountain Top, and #283, The Glorious Gospel Light Has Shone. According to the brief biography of Joel in the book Our Latter Day Hymns, The Stories And The Messages by Karen Lynn Davidson, "his journal contains about one thousand original songs and hymns". I wonder if he felt that he had sung "a new song" during his life.

I think with the hymn numbers they are trying to keep it very separate from the current hymn books while it's still in use, and they will all be re-numbered when they are put in the final printed book. I thought it was clever because it makes it very obvious that you need to look in the app for this song. So when you look at the numbers up on the wall, if you see one in the 1000's you know that one can be found in the new hymns on the app.
