In this video, we’re going to take a look at the Exa-Arcadia platform. This is the closest thing I have been able to find that resembles the SNK Neo Geo Arcade Machine.
exA-Arcadia is a state of the art cartridge based arcade video game system available in both as a dedicated upright cabinet and as a conversion kit for existing arcade cabinets.

A home version of this cabinet would be awesome. The form factor, rotatable display and coin door are elements that would be nice upgrades to something like the ALU.

I was pretty stoked when I saw it. The platform has been out for a bit as a retrofit for other games but the full package (ARC-1) solution is really cool. The games are all pretty interesting too! I almost wish there was a home version of it. In my crazy head I’m trying to figure out how to buy one for my home arcade but I’m not sure that’s feasible. Anyway, always appreciate seeing you in the comments. I know how much you also appreciate this kind of stuff. 🙏🏼✊🏻

But you have to go find a location that has it. Last I checked very anti-consumer on the home front and don't want us having this as it affects the operators. I'll have no problem with continuing to play the home versions most of these titles were ported from either way if this is how they wish to run their business end.

I've worked arcades as a tech over some 25 years. First one being Chuck E Cheese back in the mid 90s, and we had a Neo Geo 6 slot machine, and a dedicated Samurai Showdown 2 white cab.I've worked for namco, FEG/Great Wolf Lodge, Gameworks, etc. I have some friend with Neo Geo cabs, 2, 4 and 6 slots. This EXA seems to be a perfect solution to the ever changing arcade market. I own over 20 machines myself that are just in my house. The Neo seemed to last the longest in arcades. It's such a simple thing, but most cabinets today focus on bells and whistles, and gameplay/fun is almost optional.
@yellowblanka6058
@yellowblanka6058 2 ай бұрын
I can understand the rationale - we’re long past the days when the arcades played host to the pinnacle of gaming tech, with modern arcade games usually using PC-based hardware that is far from cutting edge, so they have to offer something unique like the giant multiplayer asteroids machine that you can’t experience at home/on a mobile platform to entice people to spend money. I’d love to see a resurgence of arcades in the US using boards with say, multiple 4090’s or something….a setup that wouldn’t be practical for most people, but the of course the games would probably cost $3 a credit.

Hey Retro Ralph, I'm not sure if you were aware of this since you aren't on the business side of arcades. You didn't mention this in your video, but many Japanese Arcade manufacturers actually force Japanese Arcades into "revenue sharing" agreements in order to gain access to buy modern arcade games. It's a system where the manufacturer gets a portion of the profit from the Arcade machines, and the arcade owner also must agree to leave the machine connected to the internet so the manufacturer can monitor how much money it earns, and also in order for the game to function. This is basically a subscription system. The arcade manufactuerers have been doing this for a long while in order to get more money and profit. The cost of new Japanese arcade machines are often starting at $10,000+ per machine (and sometimes going to $15K or $20K for more popular titles) . The high cost is really hurting "Mom & Pop" and Independently owned Japanese arcades. What makes Exa Arcadia very appealing to arcade owners is that its a low cost solution (around $4K to $5K for an Exa arcadia machine). AND It's a stand alone machine (no internet required). -No revenue sharing. -No internet connection needed. -Much more affordable cost to purchase for businesses. In the Asian markets they've been testing this Exa Arcadia machine, it's actually been doing very well. Just thought I'd share this info with you.

$1500-2000 per game? That's a massive premium, even if you're buying it to be a working arcade machine..4 game cabinet is going to cost you likely 10k+..40k people will have to use it before you see a profit (that's 21 ppl a day for 5 years), or 20k if you charge 50 cents (about 10 ppl a day for 5 years). While I like the idea of the platform & the games for the EXA, the owners have done some disservice to the emulation community, which the exa owner came from. By forcing the MAME team to remove games like DoDonPachi and while I cant prove it, maybe also the reason why Akai Katana is not available digitally or physically in the US territories for Xbox/PS4, where as Exa has the rights to publish it under the name "Crimson Katana", and being afraid for this recent port pulling sales from the EXA version.

dont forget that they dont really pay out that well to indie devs to have their games ported over to exa. It's pretty much a bully tactic to get indie devs to port games to exa basically for free. Devs only get paid if the game sale meet minimum threshold / amount. So some obscure indie game will never get enough sales to meet minimum threshold, therefore devs never get paid. Also Exa CEO, Shoutime, love to get involved on every single creative aspect of the game being ported to exa. This took away the creative freedom / liberty from indie devs. I personally dislike this platform and I think @retroraphy is sell out.

Unfortunately for the home enthusiast, as what Ralph showed, their main maket is the arcade operator. For private use, you need deep pockets. Not sure about the point of physical cartridges anymore, beyond the collection/nostalgia aspect (which shouldn’t apply much to arcade operators, but who knows). At least these are small (looking at you, CPS2 giant @ss carts 😂). Make that an online service, with downloadable exclusive titles and you’d remove a lot of friction. Game not selling? Dl and install a new one (well, now I see why a publisher wouldn’t want that ahah). For 2d games you don’t even need a PC, something like a MISter should probably be enough… 😅

Hi I just got a baby pac and I replied the mpu for the pinball side of the game but I'm still not getting any video bood up only getting two flashes from the vidiot board was just wondering if you know someone who repairs these
@RetroRalph
@RetroRalph Жыл бұрын
I would contact TNT Amusments, Frank over there should be able to fix it, he can fix anything. I would help, but I'm not very knowledgeable about the VIDIOT board. Knock on wood that mine has been trouble free so far, but I replaced almost everything around it.

@@RetroRalph thanks for the info I run a small arcade in Clarkston WA called arcade1up Clarkston. I do all my repairs myself but this one definitely intimidates me due to the rarity of the vidiot board

Hey Ralph, how much are the little carts that go with it? Also does it come with a cart as the neo geo came with a game I am just wondering if they are following the same footprint.

With how easy it is to play these arcades games with emulators like Ambernic and Pandora box, these Arcade places will eventually die off. Other than Arcade Museums, there won't be enough people going to these Arcade places where it's still dying a slow death. These new arcade will not be enough to bring these business back to life.

Does anyone know the name of Neo-Geo's version of street fighter was called? I played it at several arcades, remember the characters were very awesome, but can't remember the name for the life of me...

@@RetroRalph Another great guess...for some reason that's not it. I remember one character had a staff. I remember playing a round with two characters that were both wearing white Ryu-like garments, and one was an absolute giant. But I remember the characters having weapons rather than fighting only w/ fists.

This thing is expensive and defintely not for the home user. And so are the games. At those prices, you better be a Dave and Busters in order to make money back on these. Still cool to see though.

This is a really cool new arcade console and I love how it offers both big and small game developers to input their games into the arcades through the Exa-Arcadia platform. I've been a huge fan of arcade games since childhood and if I ever get into indie game development, I would love to add them on the Exa-Arcadia platform. Also, I hope Tribute games adds Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder's Revenge and Streets of Rage 4 to the Exa-Arcadia.

I think the exA-Arcadia would be a lot more popular if: A) The price was more accesible. (2,660 USD for the system + 1,600 USD for each game is WAAAAAY too steep.) B) If the repair policy wasn't so archaic and anti-consumer. (Mark MSX from The Electric Underground just made a video talking about this.) As it stands, the exA-Arcadia is pretty much exclusive to Arcade Center owners and PCB collectors.
