OK, OK, you broke me down. I just ordered one of those rods and a nice furled 9-foot line to go with it. I live in West Virginia, where there are tons of small native brook-trout streams, and this rod looks darned near perfect for fishing them. As a fly fisherman with more than 40 years' experience, I look forward to trying some tackle that's different from what I'm used to. Thanks for the vid, and thanks for this channel!

I received my Dragontail Foxfire two weeks ago. Went directly to the Shenandoah National Forest but no trout biting that day. Went to a local creek in Alexandria Virginia and caught an 8" creek chubb and a bunch of 3-4" chubb. The Rod has a slow casting action in longest and middle length. Nice at shortest length. I think Dragontail Tenkara makes excellent produts!

I've come to look forward to your new vids. They always deliver just what I need; a little solitude alongside a clear stream. It says this rod has already SOLD OUT. If DRAGONTAIL TENKARA reads this comment, they should send you one each of their entire inventory. You did them a solid that was worth a hundred times more than $179.99.

In the beginning of your video you mentioned not understanding fiberglass and carbon fiber. The difference is that glass is a slower action. Typically a full flex rod and the carbo fiber is typically a faster action ( mid-tip flex). The glass is a better choice on smaller streams, it gives the line and fly a softer touch as it lands on the water. The only downside is that the glass is heavier than carbon fiber. Personally this difference will be a factor the longer you fish. But not to the point to where your arm is too sore/tired to keep going. Orvis did have a finesse series that were carbon fiber but they switched to glass when glass started to become poplar again. Older glass rods weighed a ton years ago. I have one that is about 60yrs old that I do not use. Just too heavy and old for my liking. But like I mentioned earlier. Glass is a better choice on small streams. It has somewhat of a bamboo feel to it. This is what I have experienced anyways. If you get a chance, I highly recommend you fish the Smoky Mountains on the Tenn or NC side of the park. You won’t be disappointed.

@tenkaraaddict (or fam) … when you use the “bow and arrow” casting technique are you grasping the fly and drawing back the line or are you grasping a different section of line? If the latter, what stops the hook from whipping upward and sticking in your hand or clothing?
@capt_dam
@capt_dam 3 жыл бұрын
I grab the main line (furled line for me). I wouldn't want to put that stress on the tippet or fly knots. Also, pinching the tippet would be difficult. The fly dangles down and you hold the line from above. The rod is bent sideways so it doesn't shoot the fly up towards your hand.
@TenkaraAddict
@TenkaraAddict 3 жыл бұрын
Grabbing the fly leads to the most accurate casts, but it's impossible to do if the line is longer. In that case, I'll grab the knot where the line and tippet meet. Occasionally I'll get stuck with the hook, but usually it passes by just fine.

OK, what I found is that it took some time to get the feel of the rod. Tristan's videos encouraged me to keep trying. I almost had to learn to cast all over again, but then I have had that same issue with some western rods too. My first outing or two I kept puddling my line, it just didn't feel right. Then I concentrated on the basics, moving the rod in a vertical as opposed to some other plane and stopping at 12 o'clock. I had to change speed a little but once I got the rhythm down the rod behaved beautifully. I started with a 3.0 line, but figured it needed more weight so went to the 3.5 and I think the combination of increased line weight and technique were the answer. Now its my go to rod for all lakes and large streams (My channel is Tenkara Nebraska). I use Mizuchi for smaller streams and look forward to this new rod this fall for what I call "Micro-Streams".
