My mesa in 7mm mag shoots 180 berger hybrid, 140 etip, 140 lrx handloads into less than 1/2" , even when the barrel gets hot. So far it does not like the 162 eldx but still working on a load. Watching you shoot, that table is a suspect platform stability wise, I would recommend trying prone with a bipod and rear bag, or a more stable platform, otherwise you're just wasting ammo...

I’ve had two Christensen mesas, and one Christensen Mesa LR. The regular Mesa shot great when the barrel was cool/warm. As soon as it heated up, it would open up significantly. The Mesa LR had the thicker barrel. Would shoot a lot longer strings before the barrel heated and the groups would open up. Since, I have sold the mesas and have bought bergara premiers. Very happy with the switch. Great video! Keep it up!

kendall, you have to "break-in" the barrel,,, search for New rifle barrel break-in. there ARE LOTS OF RECOMMENDATIONS>>>>> i'd say stick with the 1-2-3 break-in.... first you need to strip the rifle down (barrel CLEAN)... with copper remover solvent (STRONG STUFF) but you follow the instructions and it'll work fine... basics.. 1. copper remover patch WET... thru bore. 2. bristle brush 3-5 times to scrape the junk 3. let sit 5-10 min 4. run a few patches thru with a JIG and patch (till "clean" new patch each time) (no more green) then a few solvent patches to clean out the "junk" then take it out and shoot 1 shot 5. clean it AGAIN... as stated above.. (it sucks) then fire 2.... CLEAN it again as stated above... 6. fire 3!!!! (clean it down again to BARE METAL then fire again.... the idea is.... (your rifle has what is called "button" bore....) this when made creates small "spurs of metal along the rifling when cut.... you shooting then cleaning etc smoothes these "burs" then when you start on your normal shoots (after the 3 and clean part) you are filling those "fissures" with trace amounts of copper to make a "smooth" bore into the threads... once you shoot a few dozen rounds the rifle will "settle" and zeros will get tighter... regular cleaning after break-in does NOT need copper cleaned from rifling till your groups start to open back up.. prior to that you'll just use solvent and clean like regular. once you shoot again your groups will start to tighten back up and the same cycle should happen again.... one day you'll clean the rifle after the group starts to open up with copper cleaner and realize (humm.... this thing isn't getting "TIGHT" again.... that is when the barrel is gone and time to replace (roughly 3,000-5,000 rounds depending on stuff...) if you need any more info LMK!! i'll help you out any way i can. good video BTW,

I have a Mesa in a 6.5prc shooting 147g precision hunter and it’s shooting with all 3 shots touching at 100 yards but I also let the barrel cool down after every shot you don’t need to send rounds down range really fast one after another and get the barrel warm it can throw the shots and jumping from 147-185 can make the shot group get real spread out the twist rate and if you jerk the trigger is a big factor along with if your rifle is canted or anything like that

I dont mind sharing my simple little break-in procedure for whats its worth...First i thoroughly clean the new barrel then I fire 5 shots cleaning the barrel between each shot, I then fire two 3 shot strings cleaning the barrel between each string. I then start developing my handloads but I never fire any of my hunting rifles over 20 rounds or so between cleanings. I find that most of the new rifles I have owned over the past 35 years (probly 50+ rifles) accuracy will improve after firing 50-75 rounds .....Good luck

My only guess as to why the bullets would string like that on the last set of bullets is due to warming of the barrel. I have a 7mm Remington Magnum that has the same issues at a much farther distance due to barrel heating since it is a very thin barrel for hunting. That is my only guess as to why the hornady would be so bad. My brother put 3 shots in nearly the same hole with an cheap Remington 783 chambered in 30-06 at 250 yards using had reloaded ammunition and hornady bullets. That is what my entire family uses for bullets exclusively.

Just going off, what I saw on the video, if the timing shown was accurate, it looked like you were not letting the barrel cool down enough. That’s a fairly lightweight barrel, and lightweight barrels heat up extremely fast. A heated up barrel has a massive effect on accuracy. I have been shooting a Kimber Hunter 84m in 6.5 Creed for the past couple years, and it’ll shoot 5/8” at 100yds, if I give it time to cool between shots, but if I shoot 3 in succession it blows my groups out to 1.25”.

A very interesting video and there are some great comments (nearly 200 comments at this point) Where to start? There are so many variables to SUB MOA shooting it is hard to know where to begin. First use a high quality chronograph or radar system so we can see the muzzle velocity variability shot to shot and box to box. SUB MOA accuracy is much more scientifically motivated than the pop can accuracy of our grandfathers. However, since I have been watching your videos almost from the beginning the first place to start is with the shooter. I am sure it has happened on some of your videos, but generally you as a shooter do not get many SUB MOA groups from any of your arsenal. SUB MOA accuracy has not been the point of this channel, we think you are great regardless of your bullet groupings. However, SUB MOA KG videos would be great! What we would like to see is you shooting several SUB MOA groups or even 1.5 MOA groups out of several of your rifles. That proves that you as the shooter can consistently shoot SUB MOA. After we all celebrate your SUB MOA success then we can turn our attention to the multitude of variables that come into play for each specific firearm and its accuracy. Again there are some great comments already on this video like barrel break in, barrel warm up and overheating, barrel cleaning between shots, hand loads vs. factory loads, scope mounting and the list goes on and on. SUB MOA rifle accuracy is generally earned through a learning process particularly with a lighter firearm. I look forward to many more KG SUB MOA videos in the future. We appreciate all your efforts.

1/10 twist is good for anything from 150-200+ grain bullets I have a 1/12 twist on my Thomson center compass and at 300 yards the heavy bullets like my 178 grain hornady eld match bullets started to tumble I got some keyholes but the 165 grain Hornady SST shoot amazing I’m getting about 2.5-2.7” groups at 300 which is sub moa and I just sighted in with some Norma white tail 150 grain for deer season at 100 and it does alright with about 1.1-1.3” groups it’s a stock hunting rifle nothing has been modified and I’m using a Nikon buckmaster II bdc 4-12x40 on medium weaver rings I’d suggest watching tiborisaurusrex videos on KZbin that’s where I learned a lot of my long range shooting from

Something people over look often is the scope. A bad scope can ruin accuracy.

@@hamptonrowland9379 just a little something I've learned over the years, sometimes a scope can have a wondering zero , shifting cross hairs .Opening up your groups, sometimes a lot. As far as Vortex, don't believe the hype. Whatever the brand , your optic is an individual. It's either good or it's not.

Barrel heat is why the Hornady did that where you shot that gun so fast

I’ve got a mesa in .300 win mag. Shoots a 3 shot group at 100 with all 3 holes touching each other. I shoot the barnes vortex 165 grain TTSX out of it and they’re lights out

I suggest trying different brand name bullets and/or different weighted bullets, 150’s, 180’s, etc.

I was able to go to the shooting range to shoot several of the Christensen Arms guns. I broke my back last year, broke my neck in high school, and had open heart surgery three yrs ago. I was nervous I’d miss, there would be a kick, and I wasn’t strong enough. However- I was able to shoot all the rifles with great accuracy! I’m sold on them!!! And no, not related because of our name. 😎

Hornady precision hunter performed great out of my 2 Christensen Mesa. Which my guns shoot most everything I’ve ran through them at about a 1” group. I have the 300 PRC & 300 win mag.

you may have to send a box or two down the barrel just to break it in. Getting some fouling in the barrel will decrease the diameter of the barrel by microscopic amounts, but usually will make a gun shoot better.
