My father bought the watch of my choice (a Camel Trophy chronograph) over 30 years ago when I was a kid, then gave it to me when I was like 14 or 15, and I am still loving to wear it. He passed away 13 years ago, so that watch means a lot to me. I know it hasn't been expensive, but its actual value for me can't be expressed in numbers.

For me it is the Rolex no date Sub, Ref 14060, it is extremely versitile, durable, and while still offering a modern caliber, the case is more sleek and in line with more vintage examples.

@@blackbaygmt_pepsi7284 Some would - I think it's personal choice, though. Since we all have the date readily available on our phones (and the time for that matter) - I think it's a toss up. With the Rolex, and being a design geek...that fisheye bubble over the date drives me nuts. I know it serves an important purpose but for me, it is distracting from the overall beautiful design of the watch. Just my two cents for what it's worth (which is probably only about 2 cents lol)

Nice choice, definitely better than the Explorer. But for me it’s still too simple. Presume you went for the lack of date to get rid of the cyclops? For me the one watch would be my 16600 Seadweller. Has all the benefits for your choice plus still has the date minus cyclops!

My ‘one watch’ would be the Tudor BB58 blue. Why? 1). Right at home in every situation. From the beach to the board room, it never looks out of place 2). It’s extremely high quality, durable and reliable. I have confidence that this piece can be on my wrist for the rest of my life without worry of it failing 3). It has excellent water resistance. For a ‘one watch’, it HAS to be able to handle swimming/diving 4). Perfect price point. My ‘one watch’ will accompany me on all my life’s journeys. So it can’t be like wearing Fort Knox on your wrist and attracting unwanted attention. At around $4,000 It’s not a huge deal if it were to get stolen. Can’t say the same with a $60,000 Nautilus. I could go on and on….. but those are my big reasons.

If I had to choose out of my collection, it would be my Seiko SARB033. It's a fantastic one-watch that can be dressed up and down. I wear it on a perlon in the summer, leather during the fall, or just the bracelet all year round. Its thickness is fair, the black dial is versatile & sleek, and the movement is good enough for me. On top of that, I got it to celebrate my undergrad :D

My one watch choice is the Omega Aqua Terra grey dial ( 2018) on the bracelet. I wear it for work, play, and dress occasions. It is tough and although it has scratches, they are not easily visible. It keeps great time and is anti- magnetic ( Great for when I have to see a patient in the MRI scanner). My wife loves it and always comments on how good it looks. I have even had strangers comment in the watch regarding how good it looks. They are always curious about what brand it is. They know it is not a Rolex but cannot readily identify the maker. They are always surprised and intrigued when I say that it is an Omega.

The Cartier Santos (Medium size): My reasoning, the Cartier Santos has been in style for 100+ years. It looked good during the roaring 20's, Great Depression, WW2, then skip over to the 1980's, 90's, yeah, people still liked it. Plus, many of the most popular watches are based on the Cartier Santos. Even if you wear it in a futuristic setting, I feel like the Santos will still be a classic watch. Will this be the one luxury watch I get, maybe, I'm looking at the Omega Aqua terra, but if I had to go back 50+, or go back 50 years, I would get the Santos.

My choice for one watch is the Heuer Carrara CS3111, from the late 90s with a black leather strap in my example. It's similar to your choice with 37mm black dial, all stick. It's the understated size and look that appeals to me, as well as the heritage. It's a manual chronograph but the three subsidiary dials are very discrete, and the watch looks good whatever the occasion. And one other bonus - it doesn't mention TAG anywhere on the watch or clasp.

Great pick, but in my opinion you need at least a date function. My daily wearer right now is the 126300 datejust and it certainly is a candidate for a one watch collection. Of course, you can also opt from something cheaper, but at least it should be sporty, sleek, have a date function, that'll cover most important criteria for a one watch collection.

Cool choice. My first Rolex was a 1958 Explorer that I bought for £300 - and later sold in Japan for £5,500! That funded my wife’s Datejust and my 1977 GMT Master. I recently sold my Omega Speedmaster that I bought new in 1971 for my 21st birthday … sad to see it go - but it wasn’t being worn enough. Although I have the GMT as my dream watch - in retrospect, I’d go for the Explorer for the same reasons as you … I’d probably miss the date function though. Oh … and the GMT’s second time zone was great when I lived in U.K. and frequently worked in the USA.

For me, it’s my Patek Aquanaut, for very similar reasons to why you chose the Explorer - in addition, it’s the first watch I bought 17 years ago when my father died and left me some inheritance. So it’s an emotional choice, as it’s a part of him always with me. I could let everything else go in my collection, including my beloved Explorer, but the Aquanaut will forever remain and when I’m gone, it will go to my son.

I have been a stay at home Dad for the past 7 years...and now it's time to dress how I used to, before finger paints and the considerable artistic adventures day to day. Let's hope some of it still fits....oh the watch I would choose is the Omega Seamaster 300M, I have been completely infatuated with it since Goldeneye and I find myself just blown away by it's classic styling, functionality, and connection to James Bond. I never was attracted to the explorer... that's until I got my hands on one and my outlook completely changed. It's such a beautifully executed piece and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as a one-watch piece. For my personal preferences, I would have to go with my vintage Cartier Santos 119901 moon phase. It has beaten every piece in my collection including my Datejust in terms of wrist time. But that's not why I love it: the hybrid between dress and its tactical origins as an aviation watch gives it such a unique look. The thin case, precious metal accents, and roman dial give it class, but the Genta styled integrated bracelet with screws on the bezel preserves its sporty roots. I can wear it with a suit or a bathing suit... though its one drawback being that I wouldn't be too comfortable with it in the water. Great video as always Brian, - Paul from Remont

My one watch collection would be the Tudor Black Bay GMT. As a field supervisor and project coordinator for both onshore and offshore, I believe this is the best choice for me. It runs an in-house movement, tells two separate time (in the event I am to be based elsewhere), has 200m WR, and has that sort of vintage classic look. Looking to buy this watch on my 30th birthday (in 2023) and will be a watch I will wear until retirement.

My one watch would be the AP royal oak, if only I had the means lol, the watch is out of the box yet timeless is functional and beautiful but not over the top, it’s a sports watch. (according to AP) but can be dressed up. A nice versatile watch overall

Brian- I was sad when I saw you had moved your 1977 GMT Master II. It is my one watch favorite. It has simple elegance and works anywhere and anytime except black tie. The size, color, versatility with time changes, and black dial with red embellished second hand are all perfect! I thought it was funny that you chose to change the strap to a leather strap. It simply did not work with that modification. Here is what I think you should do...Get the Watch back and get a new bezel. The watch world suggests not altering a vintage watch, but I purchased a new Red/Black bezel because the original faded due to wearing it every day, all the time. That really spiced up the watch! Thanks for what you do in style for all of us. I have enjoyed following you!

Good choice. Simplicity is best since I personally would not miss the extra complications. I think it is more about how one feels when wearing a specially chosen piece, and if one can identify with it.

OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300m Co-Axial Master Chronometer 42mm Blue Dial. My one and only timepiece needs the date, lume, automatic winding, water resistance, some kind of timer (dive bezel or chronograph). The Seamaster is also drop dead gorgeous and capable of being a luxury dress watch when you want it to be, but can also fly under the radar.

Grand Seiko SBGM221 GMT - love it for the aesthetic, a more 'dressy' GMT, but very subtle, nothing jumps out until you notice the details, just like I prefer my style in general. If I could get that one, I would seriously consider it my only watch

My one-watch-collection would have to meet the following criteria: a fair bit of water resistance (100m will suffice), should have a bracelet for summer and sports, should feature a timeless and tested design, should have a date complication since I need it regularly, should be around 36mm for obvious reasons (since this is a channel about timeless menswear, we can speak freely here: 40mm+ don't do most men's wrists a favor). Oh, and it shouldn't be vintage for peace of mind. All things considered and even though I'm not a real Rolex guy: it must be the Datejust 36 - since few other upmarket brands feature 36mm watches in their portfolio. The current Cartier Santos medium finishes as a close 2nd, only because of the missing date.

My watches might be very modest but they make me very happy, complete and satisfied and are only 2 (I just got into watches literally 3 months ago): Seiko presage Ssa343j1 and Seiko skx009 that I want to upgrade with an Angus jubilee. The first watch was love at the first sight and it’s just so gorgeous, mesmerising and looks great for a dinner out or an evening cocktail and the second one is just perfect for any occasion really or to better say it will be with the jubilee on it which will give to the watch a bit of class as well.

Solid choice. It would be a shame if I could only have one watch, but if that watch were a Rolex Explorer, I think I could manage. The tougher choice though for all you watch collectors is, which watch would you choose from your existing collection, and that is a tougher task.

Ooh, for me this is an easy question, no hesitation in saying the Rolex stainless steel Skydweller with the blue dial. A beautiful dial, a glittering fluted white gold bezel to catch the light of candles in a restaurant or the sun by the pool. 100m water resistance, so no issues jumping into that pool, plus the GMT function is incredibly useful for those who travel frequently. The annual calendar function is just slathering icing onto an already delicious cake. Sadly I’ll still be waiting for the AD to call in about seven years’ time!

As an owner of the newest version of the chosen watch and a great fan of the line, I’m in the same boat as another commenter that you were referring to the Cartier Santos in medium instead. I think it fits your dressier style, it has great heritage being the first men’s wristwatch, and the versatility as a dressy sports watch similar to your white Datejust. There is also that quick strap change. But even so, I’m glad for another fan of my favorite watch 😃

If I had to choose right now, I'd go with a new 38mm Omega AT w/ a black dial. First would want something sporty enough that it would easily be an everyday watch, but could quickly without much fuss be dressed up for a business or night out. I really love the Explorer you chose and really is a toss up between the two, but feeling the AT more this morning. Also adore the new AT GMT, but it fell out of the running because yeah, if I only have 1 watch it needs to be more understated and timeless. I'd put the base AT and Explorer in that category. Thanks Brian!

Reverso Ultra Thin Duo. For one, it was bought with a fond memory, and it works from sneakers to oxfords. 1989 Rolex explorer 1 1016. A birth year watch, sporty, dressy, versatile, tough, and the watch of the literary James Bond... design perfection. The watch would need to be versatile as you said. By versatile, I mean wearable in all climates, for all circumstances and something that would age well. It would need to be at least 100M water resistant, wear on a bracelet and strap, and interesting enough to keep my attention while being appropriate in formal occasions. For this, I would select the Vacheron Constantin Oversees time/date Generation 3 with a black dial. The watch has a beautiful, Geneva seal movement, ornate bezel, gloss dial, perfectly finished hands as well as indices and a great date window frame. It is worn on a bracelet with easy adjust links or can be easily swapped for either a rubber strap or leather one with deployant clasp. This is truly a perfect one watch from a great house that could be a perfect companion for years to come!
