There are other choices than a “vintage” or “new.” Just like a car there are some watches that have a large markdown when you buy three years old. Clearly there are some Rolex models that only go up in value, there are also some that drop in value. Even if you get a Rolex that is 10-15 years old you can normally buy almost any model for a significant savings. I have two Subs and a GMT Master II. Each watch was 5-10 years old and I purchased each at an appreciable savings. Thanks for the video.

@@DavidRamirez-vc8dr Yes, Apple is technically the biggest watch manufacturer now. But so was Seiko and now you can buy an automatic Seiko watch for 70USD and it tells time for years. If you're getting an apple watch you're going to need to upgrade once a year or two because technology becomes obsolete. With the price of an Apple Watch you can get a nice mechanical watch that lasts longer than your Apple Watch. And if you bought the right model of Rolex watch, the price will go up in the secondary market.

I am not sure I agree with the idea that you should go with a classic/plain watch as your first Rolex or any other luxury watch. If the watch represents a milestone in your life then you also want to capture your state of mind, your likes and dislikes from that moment in time in the story. After all it was that very person with his/her own quirks and preferences who got you to that stage of life. If you are simply buying it for style or as a everyday watch, then you definitely want to pick up something you like looking at. The only reason you would buy a plain watch which you find boring will be to have a high resale value, in my opinion. Great video though!

The dealer had it in the window display and said it was a highly sought after model and can be resold in the secondary market for 20% uplift. Not that he was suggesting it. I immediately fell in love with it and purchased it. I like the white gold as its not as flashy as yellow gold and I can use as an everyday watch or dress watch.. I wouldnt say its an investment. It wont depreciate as quickly but unless you can afford or can get the popular sports models (GMTs, explorer ii, etc.) It most likely wont increase in value and will lose value. Thats why you can get a lot of perpetuals or datejusts in the 2k range. Still a great watch from a great brand.
@hespokestyle5 жыл бұрын
Yup. Bow to the crown. I guess more to the point, it will hold its value more some other options.
@ZCT8085 жыл бұрын
You're right, an investment is an overstatement. That being said my three year old GMT has gone up in value $4K since I bought it, I just had to get it re-appraised for insurance purposes. And my first Rolex, the Explorer II Polar current model which I traded for the GMT, is now regularly changing hands at $2-3K more than what I paid for it. Having owned several Omega watches in the past, it has to be said, it is refreshing just how well Rolex in general hold their value compared to other brands. It is not difficult to buy one, own it for 5, 10 or 20 years, and be able to sell it for the same or more than you bought it for. Realistically though, if your goal is merely to purchase it as an actual investment, you are going to have to work very hard to get a particularly popular model, then store it in a safe, unworn for years, hope it is still popular in the future, then sell it. And unless you get insanely lucky, there are probably far better investments you could make that would not involve keeping a physical object in a safe and hoping the future is kind to it.

This is advice for people who don't care about watches, but just know they want a Rolex. If you are in the same position and find yourself wanting to buy a Rolex, my advice is to do yourself a favour and research beyond the brand alone. Why sell yourself short, there are lots of options out there and while probably 90% of all people might end up buying that Rolex, you made that choice knowing what else is out there and will therefore be able to enjoy it more.

Rolex Authorized dealers do not have much inventory nowadays. Most of the watches I buy come from grey market jewellers/dealers. I am paying extra for it but they have it in stock and readily available. Used watches became such a huge inventory because you can not buy a popular Rolex model from Rolex store unless you are VIP and spend a lot of money there on a regular basis.

The history and story behind a watch is what I go for. There's nothing, in my opinion, when it comes to watch history that can top how the Omega Speedmaster Professional became the Moonwatch. That is one epic story. So in selecting my Rolex, it was a bit hard as not one model I thought had such monumental history as my Speedy Pro Moonwatch. The Datejust being the watch that figured out adding the date to a watch I considered heavily, and I may eventually get still. The GMT made for Pan-Am pilots I thought was a good choice since I travel quite a bit, especially to Iceland which has the GMT+0 time -- I am loving Iceland more and more every time I visit. So needless to say, I got a GMT Master II with the Jubilee bracelet.
@hespokestyle6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree re the Speedmaster. It's almost overwhelming the amount of history, scholarship and intensity that the watch has. In fact, to be honest, I was a little intimidated by the numerous rabbit holes you could go down with it so didn't really consider it so much. It is a great watch though, for sure, and a classic for a reason. Great choice with the GMT/jubilee. Classy combo.

How is the gmt master 2? I am having a hard time choosing which watch I want. My dealer has a gmt master 2 on jubilee(batgirl) and he has a all black sub date. These are the 2 that I am having trouble choosing between.

I recommend buying a day date ii, they are doing nothing but going up in value as time passes because Rolex stopped making that size and its extremely desirable. I'm actually buying a day date ii this week as a little gift to myself, i put it on my wrist at the jewelry store and instantly fell in love!

Im looking for info on the difference in the "experience" of buying new vs. buying used; specifically what paperwork, warranties, registered ownership, box, etc, comes when buying a new Rolex that you don't / may not get when buying used..?
@hespokestyle5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't put too much stock in box/papers. I mean, it's nice, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker. You'd be astonished at the stuff that people will just throw out. The most important thing, is to buy from a trusted and reputable dealer.
@JerrySalamante5 жыл бұрын
@@hespokestyle I happened upon another KZbin video that provided the info I was looking for. If I'm not mistaken, besides the instruction manual & Rolex box, your name is printed on the Warranty card which is also stamped at time of purchase. So if buying a used Rolex, you're name won't be on the warranty card for that watch. To your knowledge, is this correct?

Great video mate! I'm gonna buy a 36 Jubile DJ as well, but I'm not sure yet about the dial color (either silver or black). What do you think about the black dial and its usability?
@hespokestyle6 жыл бұрын
Good for you! Congrats! I'd say silver if you want something more elegant/dressy and black if you want it to appear sportier. However, I will say that if you decide on black, you may want to consider an oyster bracelet, which will help complement the sportiness of the black dial. Comes down to how you want to wear the watch most. Good luck! Report back when you decide!
@nasdanrose48026 жыл бұрын
I would say go for Champagne dial. I had 36 DJ in black dial for a few months then changed to champagne dial. Champagne has a sun burst reflection on lights. you might want to see them in the flesh and go from there. Happy shopping!

Definitely a good choice.

Silver dial on stainless steel all day my man. Same with the white gold/platinum president day-date. Champagne dial suits the yellow gold day date best. Silver is the OG classic old school dial color signature for any stainless steel dj rolex. Same with the platinum and white gold presidents.

I bought my first Rolex in my late twenties, a blue faced , stainless Date Just, very versatile. Currently the only Rolex I now own is a 39mm Explorer which is also super versatile. If you want something more formal go with a Breguet or a Patek.

Other than the fluted bezel, the date and cyclops, it's a Rolex. Well done. Omega fan,but you can't go wrong with a Rolex. Best advice? Depends on what you want out of it. I live on a sailboat, i dive often, I don't abuse my watch, but I don't wanna baby my watch. It's gotta hold up. Rolex does that. Dad's got the GMT,had it since 1975. Wears it every day, and he's a cowboy. Hard to argue with that.

Interesting video. I used to collect watches and do own a datejust but actually prefer some of the lesser known brands. Pricing is an interesting factor. I prefer one that has its value in the craftsmanship and not that it’s solid gold or platinum with diamonds.

Which Rolex will lost likely appreciate in value ? This is the question I keep asking myself. I will sacrifice almost everything else I want in a watch but appreciation is very important. I got to where I can afford a Rolex because of this mindset so it only makes sense that I buy a Rolex for this reason. I was looking at purchasing a new never worn submariner but you mentioned almost everyone has that watch so not sure. Also it having a history for diving doesn’t resonate with me at all since I have nothing do with with swimming. Not sure why everyone buys this one The explorer stood out the most to Me in terms of “type of guy” I am and seems like it fits me best but once again, needs to appreciate. Any tips I will be SUPER thankful.
