House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal for HBO. It is a prequel to the television series Game of Thrones and is based on Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood. Set two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to the Targaryen civil war, known as the "Dance of the Dragons", and the war itself. Something mentioned in the blog post that I didn't know about was that they're working stage production set in the ASoIaF world. This is actually something I'm very excited about. I always got the impression that GRRM's writing is really well suited for theatre. There are some chapters, particularly those involving Theon or Stannis, where you can imagine the stage directions as you're reading.

The prof said RH is expecting George’s manuscript “soon” as in within the next year or so. My sister said he said this unprompted and seemed to say it with confidence. But who knows?

I don't think the Weirwood Tree in the Keep is anything more than a fun centrepiece for fans. In-universe it's probably just a symbol of the capital's connection to the North. There are some weirwood trees scattered across the South here and there, while rare. Reason it's gone by the time of GOT is likely Baelor the Blessed. This is following show canon of course, I don't think there's ever been a weirwood tree in King's Landing in ASOIAF. Why do you think they'd suddenly make the Starks have some big importance for the Red Keep's godswood?

There is definitely a weirwood outside the Red Keep in ASOIAF. Sansa was going there all the time to "pray" (actually meet with Dontos). There isn't one in GoT. But the simplest explanation for that would be Baelor the Blessed. So, HotD doesn't need to explain that at all.

The only way I see this publisher meeting to be seriously relevant to the release of Winds is if GRRM has been rewriting/adapting his 1100 pages stand from last year so that he can release them as part 1 of TWOW, or simply as TWOW if he squeezes in another book before ADOS. Because if his plot/word count or whatever is similar to that of the Preston fanfic, he'll likely have half the words of Storm or Dance JUST to wrap up the "intro", the cliffhanger/major open plotlines from Dance (battle of Meereen, battle of Winterfell, raid at Oldtown, fAegon's landing) and give an update on the situation of characters like Jon, Dany, Jaime and Davos. That would be roughly 35-50% the book if it's 1100 pages long right now. And then how do you continue with 21 POVs (2 likely dead) unless 5 die and or some plotlines are merged to reduce required chapters with enough plot and not half finished stuff again at the end of the book? There's a reason why he's taking ages aside from distraction by GoT/HotD/D&E/F&B/TWOIAF and private life and why the fanbase has been going crazy with theories that are getting crazier by the minute: even with the major plotlines having seemingly foreseeable outcomes for the beginning, the story can go bloody everywhere from there on - keeping in mind that at some point the Others must join the action for real for the names of the last two books to make some sort of sense. So yeah, if GRRM plans to do what I've written above (release 1100 pages as part 1), then realically the second half or 2/3 of TWOW can do this: 1) The story moves on with more interactions between major players/political agendas where some end up being overthrown, major POVs die. For example Euron takes over Oldtown and moves on to KL and sets himself up there, ending Cersei. Sam's his prisoner. Likewise Tyrion, Barristan, Dany and Quentyn (or not) unite in one plotline. Stuff like that. The book ends without too many cliffhangers but - again - major events at near at hand. This could also have the Others striking a first blow at the Wall or crossing it and winter seriously setting in over Westeros and Essos, not just in the North. The 400ish pages are the reaction to the Others arriving and maybe ongoing quarrels and end with full on winter. 2) The story moves on as in 1) but ends in cliffhangers and less people die/plotlines are overthrown. The Others don't make a move yet. And the 400ish pages is what happens until the first blow by the Others, or some like that. 3) The Others strike right after those major battles from Dance are done and the book ends where a time jump would be needed next. The 400 pages are the setup after the time jump. So really that's only if he's seriously considering to release those 1100 pages. Otherwise it's just formalities with the publisher and the wait goes on for x time.

I work in book publishing. Authors don't meet with publishers a lot. But they do meet for specific things. The first meeting is to set up and launch the book. Books are divided up into chapter groups. As each group is finished they are copyedited. The first round of copyediting is just for basic spelling and grammar. Once all of the chapters are written then the 2nd group of copyediting goes round which is more about structure and continuity. Then there is cover art that needs to go through, front matter, back matter, and chapter order and pagination. He probably just attended the launch and he may be at the first stage of copyediting for his first group of chanpters. He isn't finished writing it. No way. He is just at the beginning of the publication.

I think an interesting explanation for why the Weirdwood tree is present in HOTD but is absent in GOT, is that when the Greens hear that the Starks declare for the Blacks, Alicent will have the tree cut down as a distasteful symbolic gesture

People need to chill. One way or another, we will read Winds, whether or not George finishes it (which he is 100% capable of, at least on paper). Worst case is his publishers dump an edited version of his unfinished manuscript, next best is they find a writer to finish it. Either way, it stands to make waaaay too much money for publishers to just accept it’s never coming out. The main question is if Dream will ever come out. There’s a slim chance that if George can finish Winds and simplify the plot, Dream will be a much more concise and focused story, maybe something more like AGoT. If we are truly blessed, he might even write it, but the stars would have to align for that to happen. Ideally, he finishes Winds, makes headway on Dream, maybe writes some critical chapters, and passes on his plan to someone else to finish the book. Stuff like that has happened before so who knows?
