Glen and Maddo you have to be the very best ambassadors for New Zealand. In all my seventy years living in New Zealand I have never visited Oamaru or Timaru, and so many other lovely towns so interesting and well maintained, that you take the time to explore so thoroughly, as well as the spectacular scenery. And the amazing cheeseboard - better than world class!! Thank you for taking us along with you.😍

Yep, most people including New Zealanders, don't realise that instant coffee was invented in Invercargill in the South of New Zealand by David Strang in 1890.
@thehangmansdaughter11206 ай бұрын
I didn't know that. I'm 50, from the south, and interested in such things, but I never knew it was a Kiwi. I love little nuggets of info like that.

As someone who spent the majourity of my life in Oamaru its cool to see you guys exploring the place I would call home :) Also you can absolutely find penguins down at the harbour under the upside down boats and in their little homes, shouldn't disturb them of course but they do come out and wander around the place and up to the playground.

Guys I had driven through Oamaru a couple of times (State Highway 1) without stopping. Then last April we stopped and explored the Victorian presinct. I think Mado best described the town when outside Steampunk when she said 'quirky'.Oamaru has done a great job in giving visitors a big reason to stop and look around. Possibly NZ's most quirky small town for all the good reasons. Loved the coverage abd Mado maybe found her best cheese platter so far in NZ. Thanks guys.

Steampunk Capital of the world And where frozen meat started in the world - shipped from a farm nearby all the way to Britain in the 1800's Now it has 3 breweries - 2 you can visit. Lots of seals and Penguins you can see by yourself. COLD water, but great surf.

I think you need to understand that 'steampunk' is about what the world might have looked like if steam had continued to be developed rather than gas. It's a vision of an alternate now/future. It's very cool and has a whole culture behind it! That's what the museum is about ❤

That was my childhood summer playground - fishing from the wharf, exploring the railyard and some of the buildings that were empty near the Steam Punk museum, trying to catch eels in the creek under the old wooden rail bridge - "just be back by dinner". Attending the annual Oamaru Carnival at the show grounds with a few coins for the side show games was a highlight as well. I have watched a few of your NZ travel videos. You present them very well and I like that you include a commentary of historical and featured information of the locations as well.

I lived in Oamaru and went to school there I was even an alter boy in that large church called the basilica you visited which is located in Reed st, when I was 11 or 12 years old all those shops down by the bay where all run down old warehouses full of grain, wool, alcohol ect, Oamaru was a great town to grow up in during the seventies, I left in 1978 but still have great memories of Oamaru and it's people, thanks for sharing your visit to this lower half of the south island.

That old blue convertible car is an early 1970's Triumph Herald. Rainbow Confectionary is definitely cheap at their factory shop, and you can also buy from their online shop. They make products that are sold under a lot of different brand names, depending on who is stocking their stuff. One down side of southern beaches in the summer is how cold they can get compared to the ones up here on the North Island - no need to rug up!😎

Pro tip guys, you need to film at 25fpd or 50fps in New Zealand, that's why all the lights are flickering in this video. This video is in 60fps. Our lights run on a 50hz frequency, which is different to some other parts of the world. The framerate is not matching the frequency of the lights, so the flickering is being picked up.

The main commodities that built these coastal towns on the South Island were, coal, native timber hardwoods like the Kauri , and of course the 1850's gold rush which had a lot of Australians coming over to stake their gold panning . hence the Bank of Australia exchanging gold for cash.The whale blubber trade also brought prosperity to these towns reflected by the enormous grand churches and buildings. Today none of these commodites generate the same level of income. The Steam trains would have been ladden with coal and wood, wool and cattle/sheep . Tourism is the new commodity but even that is no where near the old days generation of economic power. Most of the South Island is agricultural since the clearing of Kauri forests. Try sleeping out under the clear starry sky at night on a clear warm summers night with the sea at your feet . Magical.
