What happens when water turns to rock and your once safe landing is transformed into a no fall zone? In the world of deep water soloing, that's when you're entering the territory of the S3's. For deep water soloists, climbs aren't only graded for their difficulty but for their level of danger too. The S grade gives the climber an idea of the route's height, landing and the possibility of injury from a fall. Starting way down at S0 with short climbs above clear, deep water, the grades max out at S3, where things start to get truly serious. In this video, Neil Gresham, renowned deep water soloist and all-round great climber sets out to climb one of Britain's most intimidating S3's; 'The Abyss.' The route's modest grade of 7b may make it seem like an easy prospect, but one look at the line confirms that it is anything but. Steep, imposing and very long, 'The Abyss' was established by Britain's preeminent free-soloist, Julian Lines, perhaps the only man capable of looking at the route's landing and still considering the line a goer.

Agree. It's funny. I do a lot of filming, mainly helmet cam stuff, where I show the whole climb. Whereas my does the great, but really short edits. People who climb usually watch the full vid and mind climb the route and non climbers just watch the exciting bits on the edited one.

its actually nice to hear someone explain what S3 means... Ive been hearing all of these rankings watching rock climbing videos but have yet to see one that actually describes what it means

actually, what he says, is completely wrong (super-surprised to hear that, considering what a legend the guy is :)) S3 can be 10m high, but dangerous (over rocks or very shallow water), at the same time S0 can be 25m high, but overhanging, deep water, no rocks below you, so can be super-safe (providing you know how to enter the water safely)

Rockfax description of The Abyss: A brilliant, visionary line, tackling the massively overhanging left wall of the cave. The first ascent was soloed (7b S3) and it has yet to be led on gear. 1) 20m, 6b. From the Beat Ledge, follow The One-eyed Man across the lower face, then drop down and traverse into the cave, using the fingery hanging wall. Make a hard move into the inner cave, to belay on a slab beneath the hanging off-width. 2) 16m, 6b. Move up and rightwards into the hanging 45˚ off-width and follow this. Then swing left and take a series of jugs to reach a hanging tunnel for a well-earned rest. Drop out of the tunnel and move left on undercuts, to gain the lip of the cave. Move up the wall to reach the thread belay in the base of the corner. 3) 12m, 5b. Climb the superb welded-flowstone corner all the way to the top.

I started writing up this whole rant on his improper use of the word LITERALLY. Then I scroll down to see that everyone else was saying the exact same thing! Hahaha. Awesome climb though. Literally.
@NotQuiteFirst
@NotQuiteFirst 8 жыл бұрын
This use of _literally_ in a figurative sense is not improper, it's quite normal, understandable and acceptable. Think about the way we use words like _impossible, perfect, absolute, never,_ or _always_. These are all words with literal meanings, but nobody starts ranting about it when they are used loosely or figuratively, because it's just understood that that's how words can be used, and like _literally_, the sense in which it's being used can be easily understood from context. Or for example, like the way you used _everyone_ and _exact_ in your comment.

+The True Fizz Haha you got me there! But from what i remember (without re-watching the video) his use of literally was a bit excessive.

The sad thing is if you look up "literally" in the dictionary now it has 2 definitions: the 1st being what we expect, and the 2nd definition essentially being "figuratively." So yea, literally can mean literally or figuratively now because of how many times it's been abused into common accepted usage. It's like how the slang meanings of hot and cold can mean literally the same thing, lol (that's so cool! that's so hot! same meaning in the slang connotation.)

Neil, it's interesting that when you speak about the "S" grade at/from 1:18, the main (only?) thing that you mention is the height of the route ;) Having said that - it is an amazing route and takes huge balls (and skill) to climb this 💪

It's not 'literally' the gateway to hell, or any other 'literally' you said. Figuratively man, figuratively. Cracking efforts, despite that.
