Great review as always, Noel. Cheers! Perth resident here with a wife from NZ. We've booked 3 flights from Perth to NZ and back with Air NZ since 2018. Only time we ever actually gotten an Air NZ airplane was the very first flight.. Return leg was with HiFly (absolute joke of a flight). Second flight we cancelled as soon as they told us the planes were not Air NZ and flew Qantas with stopovers in Sydney. Third time was Wamos Air - better than HiFly but still well below what's expected for Air NZ. I'm glad Batik is also now flying this route and giving Air NZ a deserved kick up the bum. Next time we fly to NZ we'll gladly be flying Batik, because at least we know what we'll be getting when we book our tickets, unlike Air NZ and their track record of screwing over passengers flying to or from Perth.

Around 16 years ago Air NZ "bullied" Kiwi Air (1 leased 757) out of the Trans Tasman market with a few of their old 737s, later upgraded to brand new A320s, painted in the livery of their creation, Freedom Air. Apart from the traditional routes between NZ and Australia, they offered Melbourne - Dunedin. The closest one can get to this timesaver these days is Melbourne - Queenstown. Hello, Air NZ, just in case you are reading this, 1 flight per week to Dunedin direct from Melbourne will be a great bonus in your network still. Both onboard Airasia X Airbus A330-300 (with 9-abreast economy seat). Depart on the night before, and landed in the afternoon later. While the flights can be tiring, but i have to say that New Zealand might be the only country i would love to visit on over 10 hours flight. SAA do not fly it but United does, as SAA were paired bsck a lot due to corruption. They are coming out the other side now.

just did the Perth auckland leg of this trip and it's quite a useful flight. I live in NZ but have family in Perth so it's good we have more options direct rather than travelling to the east coast. Air NZ currently use a charter Wamos plane between Perth and Akl so right not I'd rather fly Batik than that Air NZ product - hopefully Air NZ bring back their Dreamliner for the flight again.

Copa Air, Panama-City (Tocumen Airport) to Buenos Aires is 7:10 hours flight with 737!

Air NZ now use Wamos for the Perth Auckland route unfortunately until April 30. Fyi there's a shuttle bus between international and domestic in Auckland every 10 mins or so

It's not as long, but Air Canada runs a 737 Max 8 across the Atlantic from Halifax, Nova Scotia to London Heathrow. I had to initially give my head a shake when I was at LHR the last time, when I saw an AC narrowbody on the tarmac. They also run a non-stop Vancouver -> Halifax in the summer months, also on the 737 Max 8, which is roughly 6 hours.

that looked like a smooth landing for Welly. More often than not you hit the ground sideways.

The Max 8 had the MCAS issues, the Max 9 had the door issues. So presumably if you flew on a Max 8, it has been updated and is the "safer" of the two options currently.

Max 7, Max 8 and Max 9 all had MCAS issues

With newer model versions expect much longer trips on narrowbodies. Transatlantic on an Airbus A321 Neo is now quite normal.
