Is this the world's most dangerous commute? - BBC News

One way to travel in the Philippine capital, Manila, is by trolley. Passengers choose this unofficial transport service because it's quicker and cheaper than other options. For the homeless community that runs the illegal service, it puts food on the table. But it's also incredibly dangerous.

i live in Metro Manila for decades now and I never saw this. I think only hundreds, if not thousands of people use this mode of transportation out of the 12 million people living in Metro Manila. This is NOT the norm. If you ask me, the worlds most dangerous commute are the ones being taken by school children in rural Philippines, where they have to cross rivers (without bridges) on foot, some taking an hour or more just to reach their school.

Im a filipino and one time I went to makati, there are like these.... trollying near the PNR.... I saw these in documentaries of GMA(a channel station) and tried it... its dangerous, and the people who push are actually fun to talk with....smiling... even we live in a hard life,we filipinos know how to smile admist the hardships.... also there are more dangerous commutes here, like children in the rural provinces ,where kids go to rafts in a very wild river, crossing a ravine using TWO ROPES, and more.... BBC, research more on the title.

I live near these railways and this is my regular ride going to work. What's not said is halfway, there will be a downward slope wherein the pushers can ride on as well with the roller-coaster-like speed. But there are upward slopes too wherein during hot days, you can see their sweat dripping all over. And sometimes at night, it feels like a horror train especially when we passby dark areas with thick bushes alongside. The pushers are really courteous, you will surely feel safe on these short trips. The fee is 10 pesos per person (or 0.20 usd) that would take less than 10 minutes.

I was born in that same city. The combination of the lower class, economic disparities, culture in the Philippines mixed with the current political laws not enforced allow for things like this to happen. That said, people know that it's bad and not allowed, yet when they can do things that allow them to grab money, their greed overshadows the situation. The drastic things that people do for money when they aren't even provided basic necessities.

Well if you ask me. That isn't the only dangerous transportation here in philippines. But for some people living near the suburban city of manila its a practical way to get into your destination to avoid traffic in the road. Its risky. But for some people riding it? They're very aware of the danger when riding those things. If a train passes by and they hear the loud horn from a mile away they just stop and step off the trolley and get off the rail way. Once the train passes by they put back the troly thing on the track and continues. Except for those people living in the poor areas in the province or mountain areas. Some children going to school crossing a river without a bridge and only relying to a rope to get on their destination. Which is far more dangerous compared to those trolleys. Yet again it only happens in some poor areas here in philippines.

I'm about to go back, we have a startup designed to help these people and I reckon we could retro fit our tech cheaply to these to make them faster and safer.... like electric scooter the bugger out of them... give them a chance to live for pete's sake.... BTW they eat a product called PUG PUG... effectively many people will flood a fast food restaurant and naturally they expect orders and so throw a bunch of chicken into fry, the people all then leave... The restaurant looses money as the people salvage the food from the bin... In response the owners add cigarette butts and ash and other things like mop bucket water to it to make it fouled... Doesn't matter, they collect it, put it in a massive pot of water, all the butts and plastics etc float up and are skimmed off... it's then put ona BBQ plate much like a big pancake, it's cut into pieces and a chunk might be between 2-4 peso's and it's big and filling and tonight, when you think you have a problem, in your wonderful western house, just know, you don't really have problems...

If you meant a scooter for the motorway, I don't think that would be a good solution, that country has a crowded traffic, oil is expensive, mafia always controls the passenger businesses etc... So I don't think a scooter would rescue those people. If it would, why are there goddamn passengers for this crazy railroad taxy. People can't afford the traffic and more importantly, traffic is too crowded there.

I've tried riding this trolley before during my college application on a university near the train station, and yes it is indeed dangerous and most passengers were students. However it is the easiest and fastest way to cross from Beata St. to Teresa St. without the hassle of riding on a train plus it is a great help to those poor residents relying on the trolley. My former schoolmate met one accident in the trolley where she fell 20 meters to the ground near the riverbank, she survived yet she was hospitalized for head injury.
