Just avoid anything from a crowd funded company, half the time it seems they are a rip off for investors and customers alike. If you must have an ebike there are plenty of reputable established brands out there, who will supply you with a budget bike that is at least safe. Common sense people.

Crowdfunding sounds like a good idea, but unfortunately the majority of the time you are better off bringing your money to a casino than investing in a crowdfunded company. The fact that the crowdfunded company could not get a venture capital company to invest is almost always red flag.

Just get an adapter for the plug. Here in Australia we get a load of stuff from the USA or Europe that doesn't fit our power outlets. The transformer will handle most international voltages. Easy.

All those complains addressed to specific bike brand are bullshit. All bikes are china made and just branded with your company name, 99% of all bikes you see in USA for sale are rebranded Chinese starters. And... if today bike you buy has any issues than after 3 months it can be fixed coz they all the time upgrade production processes and design. Companies that tell you they work hard to build best bike and take from you money for pre orders are liars. Somebody has those bikes already in China and only change few parts to make them slightly different from another on market. They change colors, display, brakes or shifters and sell it as something new. If you go to Chinese wholesales websites you can find all those bikes with no name on frames for 30% what you pay, you can order it and wait month and have it. Like this mate, fresh models do not have charger sparkling issues not because MATE company fix it but because Chinese manufactures change it for next year frame models. I do not say that those bikes are bad, they are great in my opinion but paying 300% of Chinese price is to much, specially if you wait for bike few months like from MATE. This is about 99% bikes you can buy online. Peace

If I saw your vid before I bought it, I would never had bought it. But now I have it and super happy. To be honest, you're way more negative than the bike deserve. I love it, get a lot of looks a curious people who want to talk about it. Yes I did some upgrades on chainring and shocks. But my brakes, engine and battery works flawless. Don't forget that the people who post in the groups (I'm there too), usually post when they're frustrated. Happy people usually don't post.

It’s a great bike, I have it & have had a lot of fun w/ it! The 15 mos wait was b/c the company was still in creation-mode, hence the crowd-funding indegogo opportunity. They made it clear the bike wouldn’t be out for a year & then we’re very clear keeping updates on shipping. As of now, ppl do not have the wait & can order bikes that are already manufactured. It’s got a lot of pick-up speed, I was surprised to hear otherwise, as each gear propels you fwd. I’m sorry to the ppl who have had an issue & have a strong feeling the co. is correcting any glitches as this bro & sister-team really desire to put out the best ebike possible. I’ve tried other ebikes which were much more $ & didn’t have the kick that this bike has. Btw, I do not work for the co.- I’m someone in the US just enjoying my bike. Good luck to all! (Have you reviewed any bikes in this price range & given a sterling review?)

Way too much of the review was devoted to the time it took to get it sent out. Very little time was spent actually riding the bike. I actually agree with the title of the video. This is the worst electric bike review I have ever seen.

Save up to 63% $17,595,741 USD raised I had read an article about the MATE (first campaign) and the woman talked about how she was so successful, and her strategy (tricks). All I can think is that 31,270 backers actually fell for the photo-shopped pic of the guy doing a wheelie, and her 2:18 video where she qualifies very little, and keeps saying bigger, better, etc. Thank you for an honest review. I will add that the charger plug may not be shorting out; it may be a capacitor in the charger drawing an arc. Let it sit a while, and try that again with the battery removed to verify. Regardless, that is a small, close to the edge charging port!

I do not think it was shorting against the frame, I have had the same spark issue happen with plastic cased battery's and it is usually caused by a cheap charger, when it is plugged into the wall the charger is trying to output the same voltage as the battery and so you do not get a spark however if the charger is not plugged in then voltage wants to rush from the battery over to the charger and this causes a spark, decent chargers however have circuitry that will physically isolate the output cable when the charger is not powered so it stops the spark. My biggest problem with these crowd funded bikes is they often make large claims or say it is in development for months and all that time people are suckered into handing over cash, but in realty all the company does is go to bangood or allibaba and buy an unbranded complete ebike then brand it and re-box it, or they will simply buy the frame and parts from those sites and then build it brand it and box it.

Yo dog, if you put up a negative review about your competition (regardless of the content validity), you can be sued for libel and/or slander. MATE already sued Starkdrive over something, and Starkdrive filed a retaliatory suit against MATE. This single video of yours could cost you thousands to 10's of thousands of dollars just to defend, and it may still get taken down. You run a high risk by keeping this video up.

I'm sure someone has already mentioned this, but that charger sparking is relatively normal (unfortunately). The charger has a capacitor bank on it's output, and the spark is that capacitor charging up. To avoid this, plug the charger in first. Not defending the brand whatsoever, just letting you know.

Yep, this sparking pretty normal when you plug a charger into a battery without powering the charger up first. Caused by the smoothing caps in the charger being bought up to voltage by the battery. It's not ideal and better chargers don't do this, but easily avoided. But you're an experienced tester, you knew this basic stuff.....didn't you?? Doesn't excuse the 15 months wait or the poor response to customer issues though.

Also a backer here too but an early backer and I got it 15 months later. There are still backers that still don’t have any news about their bike. The bike isn’t bad once you upgrade everything like I have on mine 😂😂😂 the mate bike backers group isn’t even the worst one as mate have been removing posts on it. I got lucky with two of the China bikes so the electrics so far have been fine. But the handlebar screws are dangerous AF, the frame on the second bike is misaligned at the back and I’ve had to bodge fix it so the brakes don’t constantly rub. But if I didn’t get the bike for $800 I wouldn’t buy it now

I have this stupid bike and I was able to ride it collectively maybe a whole hour and now it's broken. Won't hold charge, powers off while I ride it and I have to ride it home dead which is heavy AF. I paid extra for some perks and they sent all the wrong stuff and left my extra tires out, sent a smaller battery, so I got majorly ripped off. I wish I could throw it away, but the damn thing is too heavy to lift into a dumpster.

Mate bikes was an extremely embarrassing scam that grossly abused the goodwill of "Danish Design" and "Danish bicycle Quality". The design was chinese, the bikes were built entirely in China (with very questionable quality), the only Danish aspect were the 2 brother/sister scammer that rebranded the Chinese bikes and unfortunately people keep getting fooled. It's totally ruining the good reputation of Danish bicycle building. 😡 (the original China bike were amongst others sold under the name "Llobe")

I bought a cheaper knock off version (Engwe EP2-Pro). Different charging port, no shorting. Replaced the front fork, new 11-34T freewheel, better tyres, Thudbuster seatpost, bigger brake rotors (203mm front, 18mm rear), shimano 375 calipers (best cable brakes), added some rubber strips inside the battery tunnel to stop any rattles, and added an X1 Stem (folding) stem for my BMX handlebars. Now it's perfect to ride.

Been riding it around my biking trails here in Summerlin. Absolutely love it especially since I only paid $1200 which included shipping

Most EV chargers spark when plugging the charger in when the charger isn't plugged into the wall socket first. It is the capacitors charging up. Always plug the charger into the wall and switch it on... then plug the cord into the EV. If you are worried, Buy a short extension to plug into the bike and leave it on the bike... maybe velcro the end to the frame. Plug the charger into this.

Did you try plugging in the charger to the wall BEFORE the bike? That spark is more likely the battery equalizing voltage to the charger because it was at zero.... This is normal on any charger if there isn't a built in spark arrestor.

a brand new bike / faulty battery...dismantle process / LG crap cells...and yep / motor is raw = wouldn't let my girlfriend ride it in any traffic in the city...definitely not worth 2300euro...its a 1200e ebike category so Indiegogos campaign price was just right...

It sounds like you just are against these type of bikes probably cuz you promote other types. The delay in the pedal assist can be adjusted on a lot of these bikes. On my G-Force T42 You can adjust how quick you want the pedal assist to kick in and shut off. And you obviously by only going 22 mph did not unlock the class 3 capabilities in the display. My T42 only came as a class two bike until I unlocked it It went for 20 mph to actual real speed of 33!! I don't know maybe you just want to down these bikes because you're so cheap and they work so freaking good or something and goes against what you promote and what you like. As for the charger you should be able to buy an adapter on Amazon or something. But that definitely is bizarre. I love these bikes in particular these type of e-bikes are awesome. I love the small 20-in fat wheels, I love the look, the design and everything about them. Not a fan of those big tire 26-in bikes That can't be folded. I don't even like the look of them they look kind of girlish. So to each his own. As for the customer service and stuff like that, bad shipping, The broken forks, That is unacceptable.. The style of these bikes are awesome!!! It usually if you can't get parts from This company. You could easily get parts online cuz it's such a common type of bike probably made for the same exact manufacturer with different middle men.. So you should always be able to find parts for these bikes. They're so popular.. So many different companies. And a lot of the batteries are interchangeable. The shorting out of the charger is unacceptable. But most bikes like this don't have these problems!!! If they do have a different charger port for the bike.

I'm an electronics technician by trade, and a hobbyist with experience in batteries. I recommend that you ALWAYS remove the battery from ANY bike when recharging it. Your risk of a battery fire is at its highest during charging. If you experience a battery failure during charging, with the battery installed in the bike, there goes your entire investment. But if you remove the battery and place it somewhere safe, then the only thing you've lost is a battery, charger, and 17 months of your life waiting for MATE.BIKE to send you a replacement... Now my two cents about the bike itself. Holy $h!t. WHY IS THAT CHARGER PORT *HOT*?! Is there even a BMS safety circuit in that thing?! There are ways to safely isolate the charging port from the cells, so that errant contact isn't going to turn your bike into an impromptu Fourth of July fireworks show. There are also connectors that are vastly better designed to both carry current and voltage, and resist accidental contact with live components. The RCA connector was designed for low voltage audio. Not 4A at up to 52v. I mean c'mon, it has exposed contacts. I would sooner trust the "rando barrel connector" that I saw on another ebike brand's charge system, as at least those are meant for current carrying and have SOME intrinsic short circuit and accidental contact protection. That thing terrifies me in every way and I would not use it. The suspension being cheap, the build quality being a little rough, and the company being sleasy... those are just crappy. But that battery, that charge port... no. Just... no. Name brand cells are not going to save you from terrible and unsafe design.

So other than shipping time and your eu plug. You found nothing wrong. Your review was based strictly on others comments on customer service. Plugging n charger, did you read the instructions. Cutting a plug? Really? Your knowledge of basic electricity is so limited, wouldn’t want you working on my bike

Lovely review for a terribly dangerous bike. CAM, his sis, and Christine are so corrupt, it's honestly surprising that they're not in jail yet. Sucks that they duped thousands of people through crowdfunding. FWIW, I received 117% of my money back from my credit card because Mate was so scammy. Love that their investors left and Mate is now failing.

Being a senior and living on SS I really can't afford to spend too much on a e bike. With that said I bought one for under a 1,000 dollars and so far it seems to be a good bike. At the same time I liked your video and I am glad I did not buy that brand. Nothing like spending your hard earned money and waiting that long to get it, then finding out it has problems with terrible customer service. Hopefully this will help people like me who are looking to buy a budget e bike.

I bought a bike from. A company in New York. Call Pinnacle. I am still waiting. The company supporting the bike was call Wayne's partytime.part-time. All I get is the run around. So I have a hard time paying an then having to wait. I didn't have any problems with the other guy. So when in-stock, thats when I'll buy.

Many e-bike horns are integrated into the headlight. Kinda surprised you didn't know that. Lumens specs on the ebike headlights seem to be often way over-spec'd and often don't provide nearly the output they claim. Every ebike I've purchased so far I've had to purchase a separate headlight that truly meets or exceeds the claimed Lumens output, and also most ebike supplied headlights don't meet their claimed IPxx ratings for water resistance. For example, I've seen headlights rated IPx7 and there were multiple holes in the case which allowed water directly into the circuitry of the headlight. Not at all rain resistant! The hysteresis in the pedal-assist power to the motor is by design...it's not a flaw. As you noted, for safety reasons power is removed instantly from the motor when either brake is applied...no delay, no hysteresis. In some cases a less obvious key lock location reduces the chance someone will bypass it. On some ebikes this is far too easy to do. I built a "Hall-effect" lock for mine that uses a special magnet-key. I placed it internal to the bike frame so it could not be easily bypassed. Since it's a custom job a thief also won't know it's there unless he or she has watched me use it...even then, they might think I'm just checking out the bike before riding it. I also made sure the ebike I bought has a physical lock and key required to remove the battery. For $1000 for a bike of that design I'd expect ZERO problems with shipping. You can get at least that quality and performance for several hundred $ less. There are also several models of 20" 250W 36V 8Ah folding ebikes that attain the same maximum speed (when "soft-hacked"[note1]) for about $600-$700. There are slightly smaller bikes (e.g. Dohiker, alfawise, Fiido, etc) for about $300-$400 that can also exceed 20mph when soft-hacked. One can have a quality higher capacity custom battery built for you by people you can find on hobbyist websites like electricbike.com and electric-skateboard.builders which are peer-reviewed on the websites. I wouldn't trust what was printed on your battery for Ah or Wh rating. I'd test it. There are a lot of sub-performing *counterfeit* lithium cells coming from China and even manufacturers get them (knowingly or unknowingly). You can purchase a suitable tester for about US$40. These are lately described as 150W or 180W Battery Discharge Tester. These analyzers/testers can also be used to place a lithium battery in "storage" mode which vastly prolongs the life of a lithium battery you are not using. (see batteryuniversity.com for more info on caring for lithium cells). [note1] A "soft-hack" means you don't have to make any hardware changes or require special software tools to perform the "hack". It's a matter of executing a one-time sequence using the user-accessible controls: like applying a brake while power-on the bike...or apply the throttle while power-on the bike...or similar. Make sure powered wheel is off the ground when doing so. This is a function of the motor controller and applies to multiple brands. Some allow it, some don't.

Danish design is... famous about being fancy and expensive. Might be an incentive since even the box says Copenhagen... But the whole bike was made somewhere in Asia, since who could afford the amount of workforce needed in a Scandinavian country AND sell it cheap? So I don't necessarily blame the designers (they are good guys), I would blame their choice of manufacturer, and the fact, that they had to switch to a different manufacturing location mid-production. All in all, I live in Cph, and see a lot of them around. Didn't buy it, as it is just as "good" as my Samebike I got for THIRD the price.

An option you all should know about is buying a bike used, my bike is 350 watts rear hub motor by cyclamatic. I bought my bike for 375 used and I friking love it. I have had it for about 4 months.

By default these folding bikes aren't very good. The quality is inherently cheap. I think the Aventon Sinch or maybe the Rattan Fat Bear are probably the best quality bikes. I have heard customer service for Rattan is horrible!
