Is this the WORST MMO combat EVER?! | Fractured Online First Impressions

I used to play Ultima Online back in 2006 and I've been on the lookout to play a game like this. I didn't want to go back to UO, I wanted to experience something fresher but that still had the same premises. I'm the type of player that wants to explore the world, spend time learning skills, reading a huge list of skills and things that can be done and be surprised by things you cannot easily master so the game always feels new and surprising and this is what I found in Fractured. I agree a lot of quality of life things should be in the game, like knowing the city you are a citizen of, maybe showing messages on top of the user head, displaying name of monsters on their corpses and more detailed crafting information. But I believe the core concepts and ideas are really great and nice to play. I think the current combat system can be improved but it is not that bad, might not be as good as other modern MMOs but it is good enough and not distracting. Anyway, I agree it is a niche MMO probably for nerds like me who grew up playing UO but this to me is a good thing, as I said, playing 40-50 hours is fine, I don't mind. If I don't want to spend time on a game what is the purpose of playing it? As long as the journey is exciting to you, and here it depends on person to person, it should be ok. Definitely a game for UO players but maybe not so much for younger people who are used to quick ramps.

I don’t mind a slow grind mmo like Runescape whereas reaching max is not really intended but the long haul journey is.. combat feeling shit, is a big minus. We need as many niches into the mmo genre. The genre has gone stale for quite a while and degraded a lot imo. I think the focus is not on the meat of the mmo experience and more on the aesthetics and mass appeal. So I want to see more niches that has a vision and serve their demographic adequately. I hope Fractured will improve.

I absolutely agree with you. The only way we'll see any innovation in MMOs is if these very niche games can do something new or at least try something that is out of the box. I like what the game is trying to do with building up your own communities and villages HOWEVER a lot of the gameplay elements just feel too unpolished for my liking. But I hope it will improve as well!

@@ShikariDill For sure, yea, you can have all the intent in the world and try doing all the right or/and necessary things theoretically, but ultimately if the execution is not up to par and it feels unpolished, it doesn’t do much good. Man… if WoW kept the same philosophy from vanilla-wotlk and doubled down upon them, revised professions, expanded outside of raiding .. I would still play it till this day, but.. that’s now how it went.

As a PvP MMO Player of 20+ years i would say that the combat is designed for guild vs guild combat, Groups etc i think in 15 months on release the game will be just fine

There is many many worst mmo's out there, its pretty good fun when working in a group but i must admit they need to help solo players a bit more. Looking fwd in how this mmo develops.

I know I am late to the party, but I couldn’t disagree more with this review. I have been playing MMOs since 1996, and while your comments on the music and aesthetic value were spot on, your critic of the combat is inherently your fault. You picked the hardest class to progress. This game requires you to learn skills by adventuring and killing mobs. The skills required to make your class enjoyable, and not just a click fest, requires 40 to 50 hours of play. Most of the skills you learn early in the game are only applicable to the tank class. Then ranged, then magic, then assassin. However, this game is built to allow you to respec as you progress. You can start as a fighter and respec to an assassin when you learn the required skills. The class you picked in your ignorance of the game made the combat seem bleh. This is probably one of the most fulfilling game I have played for PvP and group PvE, and I have played a lot of MMOs

Don't you think it's a major design flaw to allow your new players to pick a 'class' that requires 40-50 hours in order to be less than "blah"? Why would that be his fault? The combat is pretty garbage in this game. I've also been playing MMO's since Ultima Online, in the 90's, and this combat system is not the fault of the player. If you wanted a top-down title to play with similar game mechanics, then play Albion Online. The combat is way better than this.

@@brandonerwin7031 No. I think it’s an inherent personality flaw to pick the hardest class, in a game you’ve done no research on, and base your review on your ignorance. This game is centered around the ability to respec. You can change your talents, skills and attributes relatively easily. I think most other MMOs are inherently flawed by forcing you into one class for 50-80 hours of grind to realize it’s a shitty class with the only way out being starting a new class. Only to have that class nerfed as well.

@@ShikariDill The point of the game is to reclass as you go. It’s an easy transition from warrior to mage once you acquire the skills you want. You don’t play a game you know nothing about, pick the hardest class to progress, and then expect to it to be normal. I also find it funny that people keep pointing the timeline out when all MMOs require 40-50 hours or more of play to be competitive. Which isn’t that case with this game at all. He just knew nothing about it.

@@korymccullah4411 my brother I am not asking to be competitive, I am asking for a fun gameplay experience. I picked up Albion online in ignorance as well, a game which has you seamlessly pivot to whatever build you want to depending on the weapon you choose. I could've picked the hardest or easiest class in the entire game, it doesn't matter, I had way more fun with Albion's combat right off the bat at level 1 than with Fractured Online.

the game is published by gamigo, unless you're planning to spend 100's of euro's or your country' equivalent, you're not going to have a good time. Gamigo has the worst reputation of pretty much any mmo publisher. Never keeps a promise and litterally everything is for sale.

Unfortunately they didn't follow UO closely enough. It does like like UO from afar, but when you really get into it, it's not really like UO at all.

There never was a tutorial zone when I played further back in beta. I hate that they added it. It was not necessary. I was pretty hyped about this game a while back. They claimed that they designed the game with Ultima Online in mind.. and then went nearly completely away from UO. Added too many carebear features involving not dropping your loot. They couldn't seem to figure out the alignment and criminal system that was done almost perfectly in UO. Not sure why they couldn't see this. They did what New World did, which was create a guild/faction system that only works when a LOT of players are playing the game. Which created obvious problems with gating features behind the fact that no one was actually playing it. Ultima Online gave them a very popular and successful template to draw from.. so why didn't they just follow that? And when the combat is poor, well, there's not much to keep people interested in the end. They've annoyed both their PvP'ers and PvE'ers. It's a shame. It also appears that they changed their entire map. Just really bizarre.

This is the first game I play since Ultima Online. Ultima Online is great but I was looking for something fresher. I played it for a week and I must say it felt great to explore the world. It is important to say that there's lot more coming to this game soon (ie. 3 worlds, 3 races, creature types, monsters, skills, etc). Have you found any other game that is similar to UO? I'm curious to know because UO was the best MMO I've ever played as well.

@@caio1985 Honestly? No. I haven't found anything similar enough and modern enough to fit my tastes. Ultima Outlands is a slightly updated version of UO with a new map and new features. It's a free community server that has a very active admin team and thousands of players online. But nothing that really scratches that itch. Albion Online is too much of a cookie cutter MMO. Tried Legends Of Aria.. It was alright. Probably the closest thing to UO that I found. There's games like Wild Terra that are kind of interesting. Different take and graphics, but more of a survival PvP game in isometric view.

Actually this game has an amazing skill system and a solid base for crafting I see og runescape players ejoying this game and albion players fucking loving it TBH this is a super solid base for a game to build off of but I cant expect you to know that.... you couldnt even figure out that your W keybind was an activatable buff not a weapon skill so you know maybe stick to like new world or something.

I really wish I had done my due diligence on this one. I got an advertiser email from them a few days ago, apparently because I played Rift 10 years ago. The description of it sounded cool so I bought in. I did the tutorial and about an hour after, and like you I can see the potential, but yes the combat is atrocious. The whole time I was thinking "Wow, my college roommate would love this" since he spent the better part of a day just chopping the same tree in Ultima Online. As you said, it's a very niche product, and unfortunately I'm not in that niche. Another financial lesson learned.

I really dont know where to start with all of this so I guess at the beginning. I am one of the old players of Archeage so since its been through the wringer and I been playing for eight years I went and bought the Founder pack for this new game and waited and waited finally this week I got to try what I paid for.. Umm dare I say the money loss was a wake up call to how bad can a game get well here it is this game. I am a retired Graphic Designer so the Aesthetics are always important in a game to me. Also a good story line and good pvp with crafting housing all that AA has and that is why I am still playing it as bad as the publisher is.... So I spent three days on Fractured looking at little things because I have done some work in conceptual art but this game should be called Frustrated cause I finished my game tonight thinking of all the things wrong in this game and there are so many things I be thinking twice of asking someone to go try it a waste of money and time big disappontment for a retired old lady. Even the graphics are bad ok thats my thoughts on it I give it a year if that ...

I think it depends on the UI set up! I've seen some pretty clean and minimal UI's in WoW & ESO. But I have also seen some quite atrocious UI set ups as well haha.

This is the worst game I have ever played! Very grindy, slow, boring, repetitive and unbalanced. You have to make bandages which heals you for about 10% which is no good when most things can kill you within seconds. To level your crafting skill you have to craft dozens and dozens of items and throw them away because they're worhless. But when you level up to the next level, the gear you can craft does not have better stats, it has increased durability! WTF is the point of that? You need increased dmg and armor because you now have to kill bandits because they drop recipes for the next tier gear. But these bandits are very tough and are never alone which makes them very difficult to kill and if they move too far from their start point they run back to it and regen all their health. The combat is slow and boring, your movement speed is slow, in fact everything about this game is SLOW! My recommendation is stay away and save your money. Total garbage!

Right?! Good to know I'm not alone or crazy on this! There's just nothing really that hooked me into playing this game personally, it was incredibly slow. I agree with most of your points. Sure, I could've complained a little bit less about it during my play through but sometimes...that stuff is just genuine. You play a game that slow and it's bound to drive you nuts.

Do I need to read a manual before starting a beta for a low budget game like this to have fun? Because I picked a terrible class? Class does not matter in this instance. You should not need to read a manual on what the best class is to have fun with it. If the hardest difficulty class isn't fun, then I would bet the best class would still not be fun either. Because I actually enjoy a challenge. This wasn't a fun difficult challenge like Elden Ring. This was just a bad, like playing a game with no heart and soul from a publisher with no budget challenge. The combat is the joke here, not the class. If you like clunky combat with terrible AI, then have at it my dude. MMOs should be progressing in this aspect, not going backwards. I understand this game fills a niche of MMO players, to maybe I am not the targeted audience here and that's totally okay. My opinions are my own and I dont need to be attacked for them.

@@Fred_BlackB Yes but the difference is Ultimate Online & Albion are WAY more polished than Fractured online. I'm totally fine with admitting maybe I'm just from another generation of MMOs, however I think the lack of polish is why I was so critical. Granted, I understand this IS basicially an alpha but do keep in mind to get into this alpha you have to pay quite a bit of money to get a founders pack. Why should WE be paying to play an unpolished alpha?
