Instead of writing a long scrolling introduction to try and justify the game in the Star Wars universe, they should have been honest and wrote: "Yes, I know this is stupid, but just go have fun. - George".

Tokyo Movie Shinsha approached Lucasfilm to work on one of the Star Wars cartoons in the 1980s (Droids and Ewoks), but he went with Nelvana instead. TMS did create a short pilot animation that the public has never seen. I only know of this because Marc Scot Zicree mentioned it in this video about the cartoon Mighty Orbots.

To be fair, a genre like Tekken was what people called a "beat-em up" back then. Which is what you are doing, beating people up. Today, a "beat-em up" is used for games like Streets of Rage, while Tekken is now referred to as a "fighting game".

Correction: It's a fighting game / fighter. Not a beat em' up. Beatemups are sidescrollers where you wail on mobs to progress, like Simpsons Arcade, Streets of Rage, or Alien vs. Predator Arcade. This is just a traditional fighting game.

As a devoted fan of the tekken series at the time, and a lover of Star Wars, I was honestly surprised, back in the ps1 era games, there weren’t many SW titles that really mattered aside of course my favorite The Phantom Menace or Jedi battles, so I had quite the fun playing it! Felt clunky sure, but it was always fun playing it with your friends and a breath of fresh air.. So for me, despite of its quality, and after all these years; it still holds a part of my heart, call me nostalgic 😝

While I definitely don't think this is a good game I do have a soft spot for it in my heart and I still own my copy. It's definitely flawed and undeniably clunky but it's just so fun playing as Return of the Jedi era Star Wars characters whacking the crap out of each other with weak lightsabers and unfair long-distance weapons

I remember being flabbergasted when Teräs Käsi was name dropped in the Solo movie. I thought "did Disney just canonize that godawful PS1 game?!" Fun fact: all of the incidental characters were incorporated into what was official (now Legends) canon. Arden Lyn was an Emperor's Hand for a time, and Hoar, Thok and the random Stormtrooper (all of them Force sensitive) were her students. Lyn was also involved in the Zaarin Insurrection, boarding Palpatine's Star Destroyer over Coruscant and capturing him during Grand Admiral Zaarin's attempted coup before it was ultimately foiled by the arrival of loyalist Imperial forces headed by Darth Vader, Thrawn and Tie pilot Maarek Stele.

My brothers and I used to love this game. Absolutely understand how horridly it played with the ringouts and the lack of sense of being hit by a lightsaber and not losing a limb, however it was one of the only games at the time where you could battle as Star Wars characters to any great degree and as the sole purpose. To really play as Luke whipping around with a lightsaber (and ultimately hurling it with the force as his special move), Vader shooting force lightning or Boba Felt with his flamethrower and jetpack. For that value, being a kid with limited options, it was superb. I, for one, adored when it got a mention in 'Solo'.

I had a love-hate relationship with this game. I loved the premise, taking our beloved characters and some generic characters and putting them into a fighting game. But the execution was poor: primarily with the game speed. I think the combo system was a little on the short end but I think the fact that inputs are so slow make them even worse. I loved this game because graphically the charcters and the environment looked good (at the time), I liked being able to switch Luke into his Return of the Jedi outfit by hitting select on his model. The difficulty is pretty high if you don't try cheesing the game (if you put it on hard), although you have to be ready for the computer to mercilessly try to juggle you or push you out of the ring. I do think they did try their best with this game at the time due to the detail and color of character models and the background, but also because the sound design was good. It may not have a story mode which would have enhanced it, but an arcade mode with unlockable cutscenes and characters was par for the course. They might have made more success with a game like this if it were strictly made for an arcade, with better hardware or at least hardware that they know how to code for, compared to just trying to jump into PS1's code.
