IS THIS TINY PALETTE WORTH IT? trying out Sennelier paints for the first time!

According to Teoh, they probably chose these colors because they are the most affordable in their professional line and I can see it being the case. Sennelier paints are very expensive, even their student line La petite aquarelle and for professional paints 20 bucks is a steal!

The colors are: primair yellow, french vermillion red, cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, English green light, sapgreen, Burnt umber and payne's grey

Loved that beautiful portrait! As for that box, I just chucked out the grass green and added a cool red from a tube to make the selection a bit better suited for a broader variety of subjects. It’s nice to have such a small box in your pocket all the time, but one needs to have the right colours. :D

I had the exact same problem with this palette. I ended up throwing out the plastic tray from under the paints, I glued in 13 empty half pans, filled them up with the 8 Sennelier paints while adding Holbein and Van Gogh colours. While the paints themselves are nice in quality, I regret buying it still, I dont think its worth the money, because you can purchase more 'complete' artist grade palettes for the same price.

Can you recommend a professional grade palette like this for $20? I just bought this, and it's by far the best quality paint for that price I've found. It goes on so creamy, smooth and saturated. The colors are meant to be a classic warm RBY palette for painting plein air. Most real life colors are very muted. I did a full mixing swatch with it and was able to mix lots of cool colors, and pastels. I even managed to mix a cyan, quite cool and bright! There is no black in this palette, it's Payne's Grey and it's great for mixing, shadows, etc. I do agree with her that the Burnt Umber was an odd choice because it's pretty weak. I prefer a dark brown that I can dilute. It's a pain to mix with it too, so I'll likely replace it over time. I saw someone else remove the little insert to add more half pans. Up to 15 total I think. So I'll keep these 8 and add a cool yellow, Quin Magenta, Dioxazine Purple, Chinese Orange, and some other convenience colors like Buff Titanium. Maybe Moonglow or some of the Schminke super granulating range? I don't know, but I was surprised how much I could mix with this little set, and once I added in DS Quin Magenta it was pretty limitless. I think it's a great base for a travel palette but I'm curious to try other professional grade palettes for this price.

​@@OG_Wonder_WomanI've researched all the well-known brands and I think Van Gogh 15-color set is also a good starter set that gets close to professional quality. I can't think of any other respected brands that make starter set at this price point.

@@barefacedquestions Thanks, I'll give it a try! I looked them up, and they are student grade rather than professional so the Sennelier is the only one offering professional pigments for $20. But, the Van Gogh looks bright and clear, no heavy metals in their line up, and I love the way they offer so many themed palettes. I was so drawn to the pinks but like half of them aren't lightfast! Right now, it's only $18 bucks for their 12 + 3 free set. The colors are a very nicely balanced split warm/cool palette. I'm gonna order it tonight. If I like the paints, they also have a nice value where you get 18 half pans plus 2 10ml tubes- the tubes are Chinese White and Payne's Grey. It's $37 which might be a good deal for me since I run out of Payne's Grey fast, lol. Thanks for the suggestion!

I agree with your comments on this palette. I purchased it on a whim thinking I could use it as my go to travel palette but it has never left the house due to that warm red and the muted purple that it produced. I’ve moved on and now have the QOR travel palette in my bag.

I like the red. I need an actual red. It’s not for painting flowers imo, it’s more of an urban sketching set. People doing flowers should look for a botanical set, imho. That is Payne’s Grey, btw. Thanks for your thoughts.😊

I know you weren't too keen on the colour selection but your review made me think that it actually could be a good little palette for me 🤔 That said, I definitely don't need it right now but one to consider in the future perhaps.

I learned that the Sennelier L'Aquarelle line is student grade so I went with the artist grade myself. I got the 12 tube set and OMG, the pigment!

No, l'aquarelle is their professional line. La petite aquarelle is their student line.

I’m so glad you did this review. It was a happy surprise for me because I’ve literally been thinking about getting that mini palette. The ones I have a great for fun, practice & learning but I’m noticing their chalky. I definitely want to look into getting a higher quality

If you are looking for ones that are not too expensive but are amazing to work with maybe check out the white knights brand i really love their paints! Hope this helps

If your looking for professional quality paints and not breaking the bank! I suggest DaVinci Paints of California. They have readymade palettes in half pans (like the ones in this video) with a greater selection of colors. They even have a Earth Friendly Palette! If you want they have the same paint in tubes! It is the same paint, they fill the pans in house from their own fill pots!

I have always been very confused by the color selection in this palette. It is worth noting that this is Senneliers student grade paints! The professional paints are even better :) EDIT: I was wrong, it is the professional range!

Hullo Sara! Well you can create a lovely painting with any paint! So stunningly beautiful too! I am as confused by the paint selection of this palette as well. 2 greens? In an 8 pan palette? I believe that if they have just went with another cool red and another yellow you would be able to mix just about every other color that you could want! I am not a fan of the black either but it makes more sense than 2 greens! I mix all of my blacks they are simply richer with undertones. But black is very convenient in a travel palette. I hope you have a chance to look into DaVinci paints. I am just over the moon and have found that they are just wonderful! Not sure about them? Check out the channel “In Liquid Color” Denise is an amazing artist and she even curated a couple of palettes for the company! See ya next video.

Wow you made pure beauty with this. Even if they’re using their cheaper pigments they’d sell so many more of these if they didn’t have two stupid greens and no cool red. It’s the most idiotic palette ever. I filled mine with different paint. Edit: And watch sennelier half pans if you buy them separate: every one of their more expensive pigments are a good 10% smaller than the cheaper ones. Same as maimeriblu. They rip off customers by shaving every little bit off they can to earn more money. I’ve consistently seen this and asked them but get no response.
