This car is spotless. I'll throw my opinion out here - from a design perspective the lines and proportions on this car are classic equal to the late 60s Charger. A good investment.

When GM brought out the Toronado and Riveria's came with the "high mount" rear brake/stop lights on the trunk just below the rear window and the public HATED THEM. It was proven that these lights helped reduce rear end collisions and the public HATED THEM. How times have changed.

I never quite cared for these luxo-barges, but this one is in very nice condition, and I give GM credit for bringing a daring design to production that looked a lot like the styling/concept sketches.

We had the exact car a family friend sold to us in 1995 for $500 same color , had a small gas leak on carburetor but my dad was cheapskate idiot who never cared for cars and sadly car exploded from neglect the repair lucky family got out on time as car caught on fire . no one was hurt . Lesson take care of your car and don’t let anything ignored . I remember the wrecker said this car was an antique then and I laughed as Teenager not old enough to drive yet thinking this car was just another forgotten 70s boat car . But I was wrong such a beautiful classic . Good memories:) miss the car .

This was the model year Toronado my late dad owned; where I got to drive it on occasion, too. For as front-heavy as that vehicle was, the steering was effortless. I think my '91 Honda Civic had more steering resistance than the Toronado. That front-end of the car was so massive that it would have destroyed any vehicle it could have plowed into. As it was, my dad did end up side-swiping a Japanese import pickup truck (can't recall the make), inflicting over $1.5K damage to the bodywork on the pickup truck back in 1990; as if someone took a can opener to the truck's side panels of the truck. The amount of damage on the Toronado? Less than $50 and I did the repair work myself. The driver's side front turn signal lens and bezel was all that needed replacing. The paint surrounding it was a little bit chipped, but no biggie as the car was already 17 years old at the time with deteriorating paint. The few times I braved to do an oil change on that car, at home on the driveway, nearly impossible. I could get to the oil pan drain plug; but the oil filter was in a position, while lying on my back, that reaching it was a hard struggle. Cars back then had lube fittings on the steering linkage which needed grease that was filled with a grease-gun; which was easy to do on a typical GM car of that era, but not so with the Toronado . . . I couldn't reach them.

Yeahh and it crazy because I’m 16 and my grandma let me start fixing her 1973 Oldsmobile
@bloqk162 жыл бұрын
@@PowerUpZ Wishing you the best and good luck with doing the repair work, as the parts on that Olds are _heavy duty_ to say the least. Ah! An item I recall that failed with regularity on dad's Toronado was with the cooling system's thermostat, as it had a propensity with failing to open, which created the engine to overheat. I recall having to replace it twice; which was unusual as all other vehicles I've owned, since the mid-1970s, never needed a thermostat replacement. For a car that age, a particular headache when it comes to repairs will be with electricals, especially so with the switches malfunctioning.

Beautiful classic. I believe the transmission was a modified THM 400 which had the same guts as what you would find in the truck version of the automatic but in a different case. Since it is a front wheel drive car the engine sat over the transaxle. The torque converter was mounted on the flywheel as usual, but power was delivered to the transmission from the torque converter via a chain and gear assembly, similar to a bicycle chain but it was very thick and heavy. The wheels also had a significant positive offset due to being a front wheel drive, meaning the spider assembly was moved towards the outside of the rim. This was very evident when the wheel covers were removed. This meant that aftermarket rims would not work unless they were made specifically for that car. The ingenuity that went into the drivetrain was amazing due to how reliable it was, especially for such a powerful engine and the available technology at the time.

Notice the '73-only OLDSMOBILE script on the valve covers.......nice touch by Olds! Even this "SQUARE" styling (as were '71-'78 Toros) w/the right color paint, they REALLY were a knockout design. If it MUST be denigrated w/a vinyl roof, I'd chose Tan, but would mandate a Saddle fabric interior.
