There's a lot of comments pointing out that he's shittalking how vapid white women's instagrams can be, but I think you guys put together a very charitable read that's very positive. There's a lot of moments in the song that subtly point out the moments of genuine vulnerability that sometimes comes through in these kinds of instagram posts and I think you guys zeroed in on those above all else--really excellent reaction, thank you for this.
@sunxel32643 жыл бұрын
Yea the hook "is this heaven or a white womans instagram" means that the "white women" seem to live a perfect life, that's where the verse about her mother comes in, it reminds us that they are like anyone else, even tho they may have us believe their life is perfect they go through hardships too
@dansweet67933 жыл бұрын
I think it's just a parody of what you will find on a white woman's Instagram.
@MissJonobo3 жыл бұрын
This song got better an deeper after several viewings...on the one hand yes he is poking fun at the vapid, narcissistic artifice that goes into most of the popular Instagram accounts - carefully curated images of the perfect life that many people put so much effort into portraying on their social media ...and the attention to detail Bo put into creating each individual shot representing the common tropes acurately is in itself a part of the commentary...that seeing these 'heavenly' looking images is misleading - because it is all intentional, each photo is staged and carefully manipulated to project perfection and success. Nearly every segment in the video is a carbon copy of actual instagram posts that are themselves, carbon copies of other Instagram posts. Nothing is real or unique or relatable, albiet they are beautiful and might even inspire envy from followers. Even the square aspect ratio throughout the video and overall soft and 'vintage' looking aesthetic is clearly identifyable as the Instagram brand - and I think one of the points he is making is that through the lens of Instagram everything we see in the lives of these women is inherently filtered and fake. But on the other hand, in the bridge, the aspect ratio opens up to full screen, giving us a window into the actual real feelings of grief that this woman has over the loss of her mother - the kind of feelings and vulnerability that isn't often represented on social media because it's not "pretty"... Bo gives us peek behind the curtain - into what this seemingly perfect woman actually thinks about and feels when the camera is turned off - which is not so perfect after all but rather sad and even touching...and then just moments later, we're "back online", the square format returns, the and we're harmonizing over goat cheese salads and hammocks - stupid, meaningless stuff. I think he wants us to consider that no matter what people post online and project, that who they really are, their pain, struggles, and humanity can never be captured in this form of media or expression...and that is a really sad and phony reality for everyone online pretty much. Like everything else featured in INSIDE, it is way more though-provoking than it may first appear. Also, I like you two, thanks for sharing your reaction (y'all should watch the whole special - it's beyond words) :)
@firstlast-wg2on3 жыл бұрын
I actually disagree with what you say, I think he's trying to make a point that as much as we judge people for posting "meaningless" stuff, they find meaning in this stuff that seems "trivial" or "part of trends" which changes the flow of the song from the beginning, initially you could see it as making fun of it, but I think the way he still frames the part about the mother and father as a description of a post is really more about showing there's a human side to the dehumanized memes we like to make of people. It's the first verse that makes all these things meaningless, but the re-entry and re-contextualization of the final verse that more reminds us that this non-descript "white girl" is making a happy life creating these so-called "meaningless" posts. Sure, it's "white girl Instagram", and has so many tropes, but he took a lot of care to make it clear that he's not shaming them for posting these things even if they are derivative or unoriginal, the song starts as though it's a mockery, but then the sweetness and personality of this woman reveals a new context; she's happy. I think he was less making a point to shame these people into calling it phony and more making a point that they're human between the shots, not dehumanized when the shot is finished. Despite the general hopelessness of a lot of the songs such as "Welcome to the internet", I think the actual music and lyricism itself would be different if he was trying to make the point that social media is entirely fake (in "Welcome to the internet" he has it purposefully speed up and get more hectic as the stimulation overload increases, in "That funny feeling" the key change in the end with the lyrics signifies there is a light at the end of the tunnel, in "That's how the world works" it is purposefully juxtaposed and childlike to trivialize the sock's suffering and mirror real life situations, I could go on). If this wasn't his intention he wouldn't be so respectful of these cliches and would've framed it closer to something like "repeat stuff" where he would be outwardly condemning social media, but he isn't, he pays homage to what comes across as simple-minded, but really is just a pursuit of happiness. We're both deeping it, and I'm glad that Bo's given us such a powerful special to provoke conversation. I disagree with you, but hey, who says that's a big deal?

I love that part because it wasn’t actually a joke. Bo showed a genuine and honest moment amidst her heavily curated social media. If you rewatch it you’ll notice the whole song is framed like an Instagram photo until the part about her mom. The frame widens because it’s not about the Insta, but quickly retracts back once she returns to posting cliche photos..

Bo's definitely mocking these kind shallow white girl influencers- "some random quote from Lord of the Rings incorrectly attributed to Martin Luther King" and "a dream catcher bought from Urban Outfitters." The screen is in the shape of an instagram account, except the part where she mentions her mom, the screen opens up, signifying her showing her authentic self, that there is a real person with feelings behind the fake, carefully curated images. I think he included that in part because otherwise the song would come across as purely mocking and mean spirited. Love y'all's videos!
@XI_frankSTAR_IX3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree and he says “is this heaven” because people on Instagram and other social media make their lives look like heaven when in reality its far from it.
@terransage88573 жыл бұрын
There’s absolutely some mocking but I also think shawn and Mel are picking up something real in that the mocking is pretty gentle (certainly way more gentle than his self-mocking or mocking of Katy Perry or tech ceos). I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with your interpretation though. The aspect ratio change is the only creative choice that really differentiates it from a collage of tropes.
@andrew201463 жыл бұрын
@@terransage8857 It's definitely gentler mocking because he doesn't punch down--he's not really making fun of the individuals doing this, but more the performative aesthetic the app makes you engage in to serve the algorithm. The bit about the mom can be seen two ways: it widens up because it is something more authentic and personal, and yet she is posting this as a caption on instagram to serve the algorithm. So, maybe a way of saying there are real people behind all this, but people are also mining their personal feeling for 'content'.
@monotonesammy3 жыл бұрын
@@andrew20146 I interpret it as Instagram images showing the best parts of your life, and it DOES come off as performative. The line ‘ Is this heaven? Or is this a white woman's instagram? ’ supports that idea. Then the one with her mom is a hit of realism. The performative nature of it is gone. Hence why it takes up the whole bridge, rather than a single line. It's the most important part, and both the video and lyrics reflect it. The ratio of the video changes for that part, suggesting to me that it's now OUTSIDE of the realm of instagram. That's real life. But that's just my take.

I'm not sure if it was intentional, but given how well-made his whole special was I can only assume it was, but I feel like there's a reason why the lyrics & melody are so simple, but also super repetitive. The phrase "White Women's Instagram" is said more than the actual lines of 'content' which shows just how copy-paste the whole Instagram world is. I really loved the aspect ratio change when the 'girl' opens up about her mom's passing, only to return to narrow again when she gets too performative. Well, I think it's more accurate to say that he's both mocking them AND sympathizing with them. On the one hand, the un-original, overly-performative stuff they often do is worth mocking. But on the other hand, the occasional moments of actual honesty, vulnerability, and emotion - the moments when they use Instagram as a way to connect with others on a genuine human level - are worthy of empathy and appreciation. And I think the song recognizes and captures both sides of the coin.

It's 1000% appreciation masked as mocking. White women tend to be openly mocked by western society, so that's the assumption most people make when they see the title. I think Bo is playing on that assumption and surprising the viewer with how real it gets.

If you watch the entire special he's mocking today's internet culture in general. He does take moments to remind us there is a real person behind that perfect curated image they're projecting online but a lot of it is done just for likes and follows. It more a criticism of the internet itself and the things it brings out in people (mainly social media) then the actual individuals. Many of them are using the internet as an escape from reality that becomes an addiction. Is it healthy?

I love your reactions to him. I def think it's about all women BUT is also pointing out the white privilege and how white women/people don't see it. Those are all things NOT everyone can post or has in their lives and at the same time it's for any woman who's pages are that silly and "great" and when the mom post comes up, shows that they are posting said things to cover the pain they feel every day. PLEASE WATCH this special "Inside"

This is exactly what a white woman’s Instagram is like. I especially like the part where there’s is a “real” moment talking about their mom and it goes right back to meaningless, empty content
