Ridiculous how people forget that there was an agreement reached with the former USSR for Iraq to withdraw and the White House spokesperson, Marlin Fitzwater, even stated the US military would not attack the Iraqis leaving Kuwait. Furthermore, in March 1991 when the Gulf War fully ended, the US still attacked and slaughtered the remaining Iraqi soldiers who were allowed to leave Kuwait. Regarding the war crimes part, the US literally made up a story (Nayirah's Testimony) to start the Gulf War lmao.

For those defending COD here: "They've done this before." No. There's a big difference between portraying someone as bad versus pinning your own real-life controversies onto them. "It's just a game." Considering the newer generations are more likely to remember Highway of Death from COD than a history book, this is very much history being rewritten. UPDATE: For those who didn't realize - It's not me who cannot differentiate fact from fiction. It's those who don't bother to or can't, which I believe are far more numerous than one would hope otherwise.

@@nekajuii Ah yes. It seems you need to have an IQ of at least a cucumber to see the similarities. Wishful thinking on my behalf, apologies. Rebranding names and changing times surely absolves one from association and reference. Let's ignore the similar actions, looks and obvious references and focus on names instead. If Ale kills Jimmy with a knife in the restaurant, then the right course of action is of course to change all names. There - now Bohdan killing Boris with a blade in the eatery has nothing to do with Ale killing Jimmy with a knife in the restaurant. Ignore the fact that the scene is still right in front of your very own eyes and you only changed names of what you're seeing. Try using that in court. The truth is, ever since communication was a thing, past events were referenced indirectly through such rebranding. Many lore writers took historical events and simply rebranded the names and even times, but the actions and outcomes remained. And so did the references - so as to give similar associations, messages and emotions. And that's OK, but what's NOT ok is trying to pin the reference and responsibility on someone else that also refers to a real person/entity. Take a real event, like Nazis gassing the Jews in concentration camps in 1942. Simply rename the Jews to Urziks, then take the British and say the British gassed the Urziks in 2019 in nearly identical looking concentration camps. Surely no references going on there. Oh but let's still call it the Holocaust. I'll spell it out loud and clear for you. If they didn't wish to associate the event with its real-life version, then why: - Is it still called the Highway of Death? Why not change that name too? - Why is it still a similar looking highway? - Why does it still take place in a similar looking desert? - Why does the scene in-game look very similar to the real scene? - Why did it happen during a retreat as well? Fun fact - even the Call of Duty Wiki refers to this mission as a reference to the real Highway of Death. If they could figure it out, surely can the likes of you, unless you've been too busy smoking sunflowers from your granny's socks. As for the Rostov bombing whataboutism - then do a portrayal of THAT event, you buffoons! A simple rebranding that directly references their real actions fair and square. No problems there. What's going on here is NOT that. Here, it is a real reference that is being pinned on someone else. And as the reference refers to a real event, pinning it on someone else is rewriting history.
@nekajuii
@nekajuii Жыл бұрын
@@Xspy70 A whole two paragraphs of pure nonsensical, contradictory copium. Nice. "Whataboutism is when my actual whataboutism is rebutted" - You They wouldn't copy the Rostov bombing either because it's not meant to be the same event, just as it isn't meant to be H-80. Either way, disregarding the fact that the Rostov bombing was in the caucasus and Urzikstan is in the caucasus, adding similarities but we'll ignore it to entertain your "muh propaganda" copium: Rewriting history is, can't believe I have to say this, REWRITING HISTORY, saying "H-80 bombings didnt happen" or "they happened, but Russia did it!" What do those two have in common? Right, neither of those two are the case here "BUT MUH SIMILARITIES! MUH REFERENCE!" If it is a reference, it's still occuring in a fictional country, at a year that hasn't come around yet, and just like those two factors are disconnected from reality given it's... not the same event, the same way the actor is different as that of the real life "equivalent", probably given it's, first, not the same event, and second, wouldn't make sense to have the US bomb an Urzik highway when they are not involved in the Urzik conflict, unlike Russia is in the story? And the funny thing is, even when this is a fictional event and probably referenced a real life event, it's still fully realistic for Russia to have done the same in Urzikstan (See: Rostov and related refugee bombings and literally the entire 1980s Afghan-Soviet war) Nice copium, still. Keep crying vatnik, lol

@@nekajuii Copium? Vatnik? Propaganda? What brand of paint thinner have you been sniffing, broski? I'm not even defending the ruskies here - I'm pointing out that if they wanted to portray such an event, they should have used the Rostov Bombing setting instead of taking an obviously real event and setting that the US was involved in and changing it to the responsibility of the russians. The mission in COD does not portray the Rostov Bombings. It looks like the real Highway of Death instead - taking place in a desert, among all the similar looking wreckages and scenarios (also in 2019 - not a year that hasn’t come yet as you claimed but still irrelevant). All the details are there, just with the rebranding. It is painfully obvious that the creators of the plot referenced the real event. Both the wiki and even Polygon mention it and the controversy. You really need to be voluntarily blind not to see it. It doesn't matter at all if the russians were capable of doing such an event in real-life. The reference attributed to it should have been accurate and relevant. Instead, looking at COD, one could attribute both the Highway of Death AND the Rostov Bombing onto the ruskies. Do remember that most of the demographic wouldn't even bother to check this. To attribute real events to someone not responsible for them is to pin the blame and create an altered image for one's own gains - essentially rewriting history to one's advantage. "We didn't do it - the ruskies did!" - Them "Well they didn't, but they are capable of it so it's fine to pin it on them." - You It is very obvious that you are so eager to excuse the COD writers because you have a thing or two against the russians. That doesn’t justify your line of thought - it only makes you look like an NPC spouting labels and catchphrases upon interaction. Back to the topic - this reminds me of the Nordlys mission in Battlefield 5. It caused a major controversy as it took a real event, completely erased the involvement of actual British and male units thus undermining their efforts, and replaced them with a mother and daughter taking on the entire Nazi base. HistoryLegends did a good video on that kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKLGonihi9lmd5I Lay off the potato booze and kindly go educate yourself.

I don’t really get why they’d lie about it. As an American I’m proud of the highway of death. Tactically that was a huge W for Uncle Sam. It wasn’t even in the infamous invasion of Iraq it was in the gulf war and those deaths were Iraqi military retreating after their failed invasion of Kuwait. That highway marked the end of the Iraqi military as a capable threat in the region for a long time. There was nothing imperialistic about it, if anything it was one of the more anti-imperialistic things we’ve done in the modern age.

@@jackdransfield2230 a lot of those allegations come from the vehicles found in the wreckage. Yes civilian busses and other vehicles were found in large numbers however a vast plurality of them were being used by the Iraqi army in their route to transport troops. I’m sure there was a number of civilians present as well, it would be surprising if there wasn’t any but the allegations are very likely exaggerated. However the reward outweighs the cost by spades, Saddam’s army was rendered impotent for years and that alone saves more civilian lives than were killed on the highway of death. It brought a quick and decisive end to Iraqi ambitions of conquest and in the larger picture that saved more than were lost.

@sleepingrrandom2876 it wasn't planned to leave with civilians, and it's a war crime to kill civilians even while there in the same place as fighters, America and Americans try to justify the loss of innocent life's always, just remember this before the second Iraq war there was almost none terrorist groups out of the middle east, now look at the consequences of American lies and killing, terrorists are born out of injustice that's why 9/11 and that's why IS()IS was created, there goal is to inflict the same pain you inflicted on there people, there's something special about IS()IS it's that most of it's leaders were in iraqi prisons run by America and they were tortured, to me they had a justifiable cause but not good actions, even of America did worse which it did, they were brutal and merciless they learned it from America, Osama and the after him said it themselfs, they wanted to inflict the same pain on American innocent life's as much as America inflicted on middle eastern innocent life's of tyranny and injustice, in 2006 Osama said God knows it did not cross our minds to attack the towers but after the situation became unbearable and we witnessed the injustice and tyranny of the American-Israeli alliance against our people in Palestine and Lebanon, I thought about it. And the events that affected me directly were that of 1982 and the events that followed - when America allowed the Israelis to invade Lebanon, helped by the US sixth fleet. This from informed comment: Readers have asked me to what Bin Laden was referring when he said he first conceived the idea of attacking US skyscrapers when the Israelis destroyed the “towers” of Beirut. Beirut had been among the more advanced cities in the Arab world. I saw it in 1968 and 1974 before the civil war when it was called the Geneva of the Middle East. Although there was fighting in Beirut 1975-1981 by local militias, in fact by the early 1980s the situation had calmed down substantially and the economy was roaring back. Then Ariel Sharon took it into his head to invade Lebanon in 1982. Sharon always has plots within plots. He wanted to install a far-rightwing government of his liking in Beirut and reshape the Eastern Mediterranean. And he wanted to murder the Palestinian leadership in Beirut, just bomb them all or otherwise rub them out. Although the Palestine Liberation Organization was an annoyance to Israel, it had been substantially defeated by the Syrians in the late 1970s and was extremely weak in 1982. In a way, Sharon’s attack was made possible by the Camp David Accords, in which Egypt made a separate peace. Sharon took advantage of the neutralization of Egypt to launch an aggressive war on Lebanon. Egyptians were boiling mad as a result. The horrible Israeli siege of Beirut in summer of 1982, which lasted for weeks, involved the brutal and indiscriminate bombing of the city. Many of the “towers” that were destroyed contained hundreds of innocent Beirutis. Sharon’s proposed puppet ruler, Bashir Gemayyel, used to keep posters of Hitler in his locker at college. He was promptly assassinated and the whole scheme fell apart. The invasion killed some 18,000 persons, half of them innocent civilians. During this period Sharon turned the task of guarding the disarmed and helpless Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps over to his allies, the fascist Phalangist paramilitary. The latter promptly murdered hundreds of defenseless Palestinians. One of the 9/11 hijackers, Ziad Jarrah, was a Lebanese Sunni who was 8 when the Israelis invaded his country and wrought so much destruction. He obviously was deeply traumatized by the experience. The Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 was a wanton act of aggression and destruction that ended up radicalizing the Lebanese Shiites and leading them to develop the technique of suicide bombing. A majority of Israelis was disgusted with the war, and in the aftermath Sharon was politically marginalized for two decades. Somehow he has managed to rehabilitate himself and now pursues his agenda of killing without any let or hindrance.

Those weren't innocent civilians. Highway of Death resulted from the Iraqi army fleeing Kuwait after they had failed to invade and occupy Kuwait. The Iraqi army stole any civilian vehicle they could find in Kuwait, set the Kuwaiti oil fields on fire, and booked it for the highway. But they weren't fast enough to escape the American Hercules airplanes... Or as CoD gamers know it; the AC-130. Yes, America will happily take the blame for killing soldiers who failed to invade another country. It’s definitely worth noting that in real life, the “fleeing Iraqi vehicles” were not civilian cars or refugees but the Iraqi Army retreating out of Kuwait. Not surrendering, retreating and regrouping. They were 100% legitimate targets. They had practically no defense against coalition air forces, so the results of the ensuing turkey shoot ended up being pretty gruesome, but that’s unfortunately war. If they surrendered, it would have been a different story. Saddam severely overestimated the capabilities of his forces, underestimated those of the coalition and picked a fight he couldn’t win. The Highway of Death isn’t a war crime, it’s simply the end result of a long military convoy with no effective air defenses meeting a technologically advanced enemy with total air superiority.
@lach7324
@lach7324 2 ай бұрын
Okay, so a few things for the sake of anyone who might see this later. First of all this is somewhat true. The highway was attacked because Iraqi soldiers were fleeing down it. However, pinning it on Russia is still a form of propaganda, and this is still a warcrime. Regardless of whether they had officially surrendered or not, international law forbids killing retreating soldiers who are not currently engaging in combat.
@JakvsMetalheads999
@JakvsMetalheads999 2 ай бұрын
@@lach7324 No, that’s not correct and I’d encourage you to read up on the matter. It's a war crime to kill a non combatant. A non combatant would be a surrendered enemy, a prisoner of war, a wounded enemy, a civilian, etc. A *retreating* enemy is *not* a non combatant. They have not surrendered. They are not out of the fight. They are simply leaving a position to avoid being destroyed or captured. Another way to think of it - they're leaving to fight another day. As long as they haven't surrendered, they are still legitimate targets. As dishonorable or unfair as it might seem to essentially shoot an enemy in the back, it is not a war crime. In the case of the Gulf War, the Iraqi Army had not surrendered, they were simply retreating from Kuwait, and were still legitimate targets for the Coalition to destroy. Had they not been destroyed, those forces could have been used against them or against Kuwait. If they laid down their weapons and surrendered to the Coalition, the situation would be very different, but that's not what happened. It was definitely not right for this game to try to paint the Highway of Death as something the Russians did, nor was it right in general how this game depicted the Russians. Whoever wrote this story went way overboard and definitely crossed the line into propaganda. The Russians are comically evil in this game and I'm not defending that. All I'm saying is that the real life Highway of Death incident, carried out by American forces in the Gulf War, was not a war crime. It wasn't a good thing either, it was gruesome and it was terrible, but that's the unfortunate reality of war. The term "war crime" gets thrown around way too freely these days. It's very important people understand what is and is not a war crime. That's why I'm replying to this, so that misinformation isn't spread and so that people, including yourself, understand and look into these things. *I also apologize if you noticed all the edits I've been making, I was struggling to find the right wording here.

@@warcriminal3414 think about it, it's a game, a.work.of.fiction. And besides who would be stupid enough unless you flunked out of college to not remember that in REAL LIFE the Americans were the ones who carpet bombed an entire highway full of retreating IRAQI FORCES that were by many percent of a chance intentionally keeping in distance with civilian vehicles whom btw were mostly abandoned, sure there were like tens of thousands of casualties if i remember correctly but they weren't the real targets they're simply unavoidable collateral damages, victims. To win a war you must be prepared to be drenched in the blood of both the adversaries and the innocents stuck in the middle (you may think i make it sound simple but i don't care, that's on you). But then again back to the game, it's an alternate setting with events being altered to some degree where the Russians are the major evil while the Americans are the lesser evil (why I didn't say good guys is because the story has shepherd and shadow company). So long story short it's a game so expect it to be altered like any other stories.

@@sudaifbasharaluqla5963 I get where you might be upset, but I think it was more a way to emphasize the cruelty of the setting rather than an outright attack on Islamic people. Hold onto your outrage and think about it for a minute. A bomb goes off in a house where Islam is practiced. The Quran is destroyed by shrapnel, blast pressure, etc. and its pages are scattered throughout the room. The soldiers clearing the house aren't going to be paying attention to a sheet of paper beneath their feet, whether it's religious or not. To them it's just another piece of paper, because their main concern is on not getting shot. From a writer's perspective I completely understand the purpose of putting the Quran pages there, because it is a more subtle aspect of storytelling. It tells of the indiscriminate nature of the Russians in the story and how they view the people of the country they're invading. It's not meant to be an attack on anyone, so taking it as one is just silly.
