I actually owned this puzzle when I was around 20 years old! A dear friend ( who is now my husband) bought it for me, knowing I loved puzzles. Anytime I talk to people about puzzles, I bring up the Flat Banana because it took me four months to build, although in my defense I was a full-time student with a busy social life at that time. At the end, I glued it all together because I never wanted to rebuild it again. Such a fond memory. Thanks, Karen, for reminding us how fun and therapeutic puzzling is.

It was a happy childhood memory. I would have been 7 or 8 in 1979/80 when I helped my parents assemble this puzzle in the living room. A year later, they divorced. I remember doing the red sticker part, probably the 2nd time it was put together. I didn't know it was a bragging rights thing. I wish I could say I did it as a child, but I probably didn't do it alone. If I could go back, I would. I'd do it all over again.

Hi Karen I was fortunate enough to pick up this yellow flat banana puzzle at Goodwill a year ago. I found some good "tells" that helped me put it together and I don't think you mentioned them already. I was glad to see that I had sorted the puzzle pieces as you had. I went a small step beyond and sorted them also based on color variances. 1. You must keep in mind that this isn't just a picture of yellow. It's a picture of a yellow banana. Color variances are expected. If one would look at a real yellow banana before starting this puzzle it helps your eye to notice the subtle shade differences at random points. 2. When looking at a real and firm banana one notices that of course it is not flat. Now picture what it would look like if you flattened it in order to take a picture. A very obvious thing would come to light. The banana peel itself is not flat. It has edges that give the banana its stability and firmness. Now, go back to the yellow flat banana puzzle box and look for the banana's edge. It should pop out to you now and you'll wonder how in the world you missed it before. I first saw it when I was taking a picture of the cover to show a friend of mine what puzzle I was going to do. (If you still can't find the banana edge, it's located down the center of the picture from top to bottom. The color variance is a distinct wide line.) 3. Camera filters can really help find color variances in a solid color puzzle. The subtle differences can leap out at you once you know what you're looking for. Lastly, nice job with this puzzle. It's on my list of ones that were most difficult to put together. All the best to you.

Since you are still struggling to describe puzzle pieces. Here is a quick nomenclature you could use that is fairly simple and can probably be extended to describe non standard pieces: - all outs would be 4/0 or simply 4s - all ins would be 0/4 or simply 0s - 3 outs, 1 ins (or castle as you call them) would be 3/1 - 3 ins, 1 out would be 1/3 - 2 outs, 2 ins regular shape puzzle pieces would be 1/2/1 (I guess 1/1/1/1 would be a more consistent description, but I think most people would have a better intuition as to what a 1/2/1 piece would be) - And the non regular 2 outs, 2 ins would be 2/2 from there you can expand to shape that have less or more than 4 ins/outs using the same type of patterns

The comics on the back of the box are very "punny", but also very clever! I happen to like puns. They are actually often difficult to create, and they cause your brain to have to do a little flip to make sense of them. However, I would like to object to the epithet "boomer humor". I prefer to think of it as "dad joke" humor or little kid humor, because it's clean yet clever. Also, the cartoon style of each panel is still being used today. It's proment in the Red Bull ads, for example.

On your last video (the stats one), I ended up buying one that showed up -- the Sherlock Holmes one. It ended up being almost the exact opposite of this one: the pieces are all the standard 2in/2out shape, and there are a lot of false fits. The only trustworthy guide is the graphic, which is extremely detailed. I'm not sure how much I like it. All I can say is that if I weren't a Holmes fan, I might not even be finishing it. I definitely prefer something with an interesting graphic and shapes. I don't think I'd want to do a solid yellow puzzle, or any solid color ... unless it were fussy-cut. I'd love to see one that's solid red with springbok piece shapes, but included in there are pieces shaped like things that are red. Pieces shaped like hearts, poppies, apples, tomatoes, strawberries, a stop sign, etc.
