🎬 In this FIlmSpeak video essay we ask Is Thor: Love and Thunder Really THAT BAD?
🔔 SUBSCRIBE: kzbin.info?sub_con...
Thor Love and Thunder...arguably the most DIVISIVE film we've seen from Phase 4 of the MCU thus far. Some claim Thor: Love and Thunder is the WORST MCU Movie ever and the WORST Thor Movie of all time. Others find Thor 4 to be the BEST Thor Movie, but I think the answer lies somewhere in the middle. While I do believe Thor Love and Thunder is better than Thor Ragnarok - balancing emotions and comedy much better than Thor 3 - and I do believe the new Thor movie has some of the BEST Thor moments and some of the most emotional ones, it does fall victim to the carefree and sometimes careLESS approach of Taika Waititi. Whether is those stupid screaming goats, Marvel's CGI problem, or an overreliance of improv from his actors, it's clear Taika Waititi is less concerned with HOW good his latest Thor adventure is and more so with how much fun did he have on set messing around with his buddies. Sometimes, you have to care about the film that you're making, sometimes it's important to give a d***. It's frustrating too because there are so many sincere, heartfelt, emotional moments that will make you shed a tear and that feels like the Taika Waititi we know from films like Boy or Jojo Rabbit, and then there are parts that feel like the worst possible SNL skit. In short, the huge problem with thor love and thunder is the highs are incredible, and the lows grate further and further with each subsequent rewatch. Griffin (@griffschiller) and editor Laurence (@laurenceonYT) give you their Thor: Love and Thunder review and explain The Good and the Bad of Thor Love and Thunder along with Why Thor Love and Thunder is Good and what went wrong with Thor Love and Thunder. Enjoy our Thor Love and Thunder analysis!

The problem is that fans demanded “director driven” films without understanding that it was Feige having that control which gave the earlier phases that feeling of unification and made them feel like they worked as one. The crowd demanded something they didn’t really want, and Feige gave it to them instead of giving us what we really want. His films. We want Kevin Feige production. Not Taika Waiti direction. Let directors direct, sure. But don’t rely on them to tell part of an over arching narrative in which they have no stake. Feige is the one with the stake. He’s the common thread. It’s up to fans and Feige to realize that that’s what has made the MCU so consistent. It’s that he didn’t let it get too out of hand. So for example, Feige should’ve said “I’m sorry Taika, but Korg isn’t working right now” instead of “I trust whatever you do, Taika”

I'm confused by the comparison between Ragnarok and Love & Thunder in terms of humour. I'd say the issue that I and most of the people I know have with this film is the the quips and jokes were unrelenting, not really easing until the third act. In my opinion, while Ragnarok had a lot of humour, it was weaved into the scene as opposed to being the scene. While in Love and Thunder it felt like we couldn't get any kind of heartfelt moment without a Korg/Valkyrie one-liner or a screaming goat immediately after the scene.

My problem with it doesn’t even have to do with humour at all! The movie could have been dark and serious for all i care, but it would still suffer from the same problems, that it ended up suffering from anyway! The problem i have with it is pacing and how characters interacted with one another! As far as pacing is concerned it was all over the place…it felt like most scenes are rushed, the most intriguing dialogues were rushed, while the most meaningless were given more screen time priority! The scene with the Zeus in the end had an anti-climactic conclusion, Thor’s Jane’s, Korg’s and Valkyrie’s trip to the festival of Gods felt pointless…all of that effort put into scenes with Zeus talking just to kill him off right away as soon as he finishes?! Yikes…

I am ok with this film, my main complain is that there is no cohesion between Thor story and Gorr motivations. Thor spent 5 years sobbing after infinity war without helping the asgardians and then after endgame once he felt better the first thing he did was to leave the planet and go in adventures with the Guardians. HE IS A BAD GOD, at least in these last 5 years and the fact that the movie never questions him about his past actions, especially when Gorr is the main villain is kinda weird... at least for me.
@pingew

yeah that was one thing that felt so wrong about the movie. like in omnipotentcity he yells at the crowd that "maybe we have lost our way" but then he doesnt lead any sort of effort for god reform or questions why they should be gods? like what if gorr's wish just stripped the gods' powers then what meaningful difference would that make to people other than the gods? it feels like a waste of a potential plotline
@goldenrequiem7533

I haven't watched the movie yet but I struggle to understand why they didn't simply make him king again after endgame it seems more cohesive and understandable as well as line up with the comics. Surely he would have used his grief from seeing all the people who disappeared partly due to him an LD the need to do better especially after just giving up as fat Thor why didn't he becomes king again and go for the throne. It would then make his battle with Gorr seem more interesting as well as develop his character and give him the meaning he's been searching for like that's what all the Thor movies seemed to have been building to at least to me. But he was king for like 30 min he literally didn't do anything or at least none that I saw so why? It just baffles me because it would make more sense as his goal to protect his people and prevent something like thanks from ever happening again.

You are right there is no cohesion between God and man. There is plenty juxtaposition. Thor/Zeus vs Jane/Gorr. The gods are out of touch, uncaring and invincible. The human with godly powers are loving, flawed and ultimately mortal. Thors connection comes at the end. Three arcs: out of love, finding love, found love.

i wouldn't consider the movie to be bad, just a huge missed opportunity to tell a truly epic and emotional story. I think the movie should have been longer with more screentime devoted to Gorr and toning down some of the comedy, although with Taika at the helm, a comedic tone was to be expected which doesn't really jive with the story they were trying to tell.

In love in thunder hes just like a bumbling idiot.

Later on he calls the bifrost while he's inside the new Asgard government building and destroys the roof. Yeah that's a small example but every other movie he takes time to step away from people and buildings before calling the bifrost because he knows it's destructive. Lost me at “wholly in line with the character” in terms of character progression. Thor has the most tragic character arc through Endgame. You CANNOT just skip over what it took for him to get beyond the grief of what’s transpired and jump straight to bloviating idiot. There’s a more interesting character driven film waiting right there. Bringing Jane back could be the thing that helps him heal by seeing how she deals with the tragedy of losing herself literally from cancer. “Yes these things happen & they’re terrible, but they don’t have to define you” That’s what this movie should be.
@Moony1989

My guy you just described what this movie did. We didn't skip over what it took for him to get beyond grief, we saw him pull out of depression in Endgame. But he's still lost and numb at the beginning of this movie and is masking it, he's not an idiot, just masking. Jane IS the thing that helps him heal by forcing him to deal with one of the many past traumas that are plaguing him and forcing him to deal with loss again by framing it with her own coming to terms with impending loss/death, while also helping him work through his issues. By the end he's found purpose again and has come to the very conclusion you quoted.

Like Multiverse of Madness, Love and Thunder for me is a very flawed but ambitious film. Especially in the emotional department. If they dialed back on taking Thor in the Ragnarok route up to 11, gave more time to flesh out Gorr, Lady Thor, and made the most of the parallels between their arcs, then I would’ve felt much more in the finale, like I felt for Yondu in Vol. 2. If they really took the time to improve this one, I could’ve came out with this as my favourite of the MCU. Also crazy to look back on the Vanity Fair video where Taika points out how bad the VFX are on Korg, given the emerging talks on VFX artists needing more time to iron them out.

Thor: Love and Thunder was solid in a weird way. It’s more corny, cheesy, and definitely even more cartoonish than Ragnarok. I dunno what it is, but this movie pretty much has what we’re getting from Marvel at this point. The writing in this film is full of problems, but at this point in the MCU… it’s obvious. But the movie does have good stylistic directing from Taika Waititi. I really liked the directing in this movie and Waititi does know how to make most shots look like a wallpaper. The movie did have a lot of heart and emotion to it. Despite the flaws, the movie was very artistic. Christian Bale was excellent in this. I actually liked Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor. Overall, Love and Thunder is far from great, but it’s not anything horrible. Personally, I still think Thor: The Dark World is still the worst Thor film and still the worst MCU movie.

The main problem was that the director tried to tell 2 long different stories in 1 short movie. Thor vs Gorr should have been it's own movie and the same applies to Jane Foster. Gorr barely appeared on the screen, wasn't developed enough to feel like a real threat. You can replace Gorr with that Elf villain from Thor 2 and the story would have been the same. It wasn't Christian Bale's fault, but that of the script writer. In this movie Gorr is a forgetable villain. Jane Foster deserved a movie of her own. There should have been more focus on her struggle to fight cancer while also trying to protect the world from villains. I think these 2 stories don't mix well together, because you can't fully develope one without taking the center stage from the other. What we got was a half-baked compromise which fails to deliver a memorable villain and it's serious moments are compromised by childish humor. I am not against comedy, I even enjoyed some of the jokes, but they remove any sense of danger from the villain's part and they take from the time which could have been used to improve the plot. I'm tired of this depressed Thor who is constantly dealt bad hands. This guy went through so many emotional crisis by this point (all his family dead, his home destroyed, his friends either died or left him and his ex girlfriend had cancer). Why does Marvel hate Thor so much? Will we ever see a movie where he tackles his issues head on without everything being turned into a joke? Will we see Thor take responsibility and lead his people like the hero his father wanted him to be? Not in the MCU, that's for sure!

I think they could have balanced and better told those stories, but they chose to spend all their time ad-libbing comedy moments into most scenes. I think if they spent their time using source material as a guide for dialogue and exposition, this could have been a better film. But the direction and writing wasn't used effectively for that purpose.

I just think they should've taken it more serious. They leaned a little too much on the comedy, that it made the film not feel like it mattered. Even though the plot could've be extremely important for the future. All recent Marvel movies have seemed way too compact, like they want to make movies out of stories that should be in series. With stories that could and should be waaay more fleshed out.

I am on board with the film's message, and, taken individually, even most of the jokes (apart from the screaming goats). My issue was it was ALL jokes, which undercut the emotional weight. Was I worried about the kids? Of course not, Valkyrie was tickling Thor's nose and then one of them was granted the power of killer bunny. Even the end, when Thor and the kid go into battle - which weapons do they use? The funniest combination, which is a child hefting an axe bigger than she is. The sheer volume of jokes took the film from "funny" (like Ragnarok) to "comedy" , and not necessarily a good one.

The humor never ruined the stakes for me, and I love a lot of the chuckles (not all). It was the lack of scenes to establish how intense the stakes were. How big the threat was. The only character whose stakes and risk were felt was Jane's by the end. Like I never felt like Gor was going to wish to crush the universe. Not enough scenes to misdirect or make the possibility seem real. Then again I think this goes back to the overall theme of Love. It's why the movie is like an 8/10 ballpark for me.

There were too many jokes, and jokes that didn't land, in the beginning of the film. Either cut them out, or make them work. And I am beyond tired of this trope of the villain killing and causing havoc and destruction through out the film, only to get a redemption arc at the very end. One thing they could have done, that would have improved things, was Jane's cancer arc. Instead of handling it because she's a strong woman, if they had shown her having to face her own mortality, and the fight being difficult and fracturing, her finally sacrifice would have had more emotional heft. Instead, we get her saying she could science her way through it. When that didn't work, she Asgarded her way through it. And the only time we see how difficult it might be, is her alone in her apartment when she drops the hammer. Then picks it up again and destroys a sink. Immediately Valkyrie shows up and the two go off to take on Gorr because they're two strong woman.

Haven't seen it yet, but I get the sense that Love & Thunder does not balance its tone very well. The original Branagh Thor was a Shakespearean hero's tale where 90% of its characters, world, and ideas are played straight. Ragnarok is a high speed buddy comedy film where 90% of the characters, world, and ideas are delivered tongue-in-cheek. Both of those movies know their tone and fully commit to it. Love & Thunder sounds like it tries to split the difference between the two and ends up falling between the cracks. I also think people are getting tired of Thor's character arc. Marvel didn't know where to take him after his first outing, so his development since has been scattered and uneven. It also seems incredibly cyclical; like they're recycling the same issues over and over again (Thor's immaturity, thinking he's found his purpose, losing his purpose, just kinda hanging out until he gets something to do, etc etc). Which is a shame, because there is a lot there in his character to explore and challenge.

I think this film forgot about Thor’s struggle with his identity. After “Ragnarok”, “Infinity War” and “Endgame”, it made sense for Thor to have lost his sense of self. But he also made a “Valkyrie” a king. He thrust all this responsibility on her, when really she just missed being in the field, which is where she found purpose. I hate to say it but Thor should have become king. For real this time. He should have been questioned by Valkyrie on the abandonment of his responsibilities once things became overwhelming for her. He should have been interrogated by Gorr as well. Which should have connected back to his past failures, especially losing his friends and family to Thanos. The film shows how much of an impact Thor has on his people, especially the children. Thor and Gorr didn’t truly have a connection that benefited the story in my book. Gorr and Jane had better parallels than the main hero, which is nice for Jane but a problem for Thor’s character arc as well. Thor stepping up and fully embracing his role as king of Asgard and being the beacon his people needed, especially with him transferring his powers to the kids, which was pretty amazing, should have been the logical end point to this film I feel. Instead he became a “Dad” which was out of left field. I’m fine with “Love” being raised in Asgard but Thor becoming her legit father figure I think wasn’t the best choice. Maybe I missed somethings or I’m wrong but I wish the film did more with this. I also felt “Ragnarok” had a better balance of humor and seriousness. This film felt more silly at times. And Thor’s character being goofier I’m not sure was the best but beyond all that, I still liked the film but I didn’t love it.

100% and I don't hate to say it. Thor should have become King like he did in the comics. That they robbed him of that and now have ended 2 movies of him just goofing about instead of taking up the mantle (instead giving it to 'King' Valkryie the enslaver) is just unbelievable. He's now stuck in a bizarre character development limbo where they refuse to resolve his arc respectfully and naturally by making him King, they've now regressed him back to the God of Hammers with Mjolnir and now he's...killing random, unnamed CGI bad guys with...Gorr's daughter of all people...who uses stormbreaker? What the fuck were they smoking where this made any logical sense? I'd rather see him killed off than dragged through the mud like this. Give him a respectful, logical arc ending like Steve and Tony or kill him off. Also your option about Valkryie questioning him and him returning to King would have been amazing but they'll never now let up 'King' Valkryie being ruler despite it being a joke.

Thor can be awkward but not a joke. Him riffing in New Asgard was terrible after Gorr snuck in like a boogeyman, him treating his hammers like his girlfriend was borderline parody. I compare it to Flash Gordon 1980 (Taika cited that and Big Trouble in Little China as major inspirations for HIS THOR), where it was in on the joke but the joke of the film was very good, a feel good romp without hampering characters like Flash who did grow into a warrior. Thor never got out of that gear for me as a idiot. That scene in Infinity War explaining his love of battle and all the loss is what Thor IS to me.
@ianbrooks4516
@ianbrooks4516 Жыл бұрын
Every lesson Thor learned in this movie, he had already learned in one of his 7 previous. The story required Thor to be a fool, and regress every step he'd ever made. Like Ragnarok, this was a very good looking movie who's protagonist looked like, sounded like and had the powers of Thor, but wasnt Thor. It was a buffoon. Taika couldn't even decide if he wanted the Guardians to think Thor was cool or roll their eyes at him. Waititi would be better off directing a cartoon for Thor where the constant flipping between comic buffoonery, romantic clutz, fumbling hero and dire seriousness for a single character is more acceptable.

Thor's only personality being comedic relief traits made this not fun for me. I go to superhero movies for heroics, and I never got the feeling Thor cared much about the world around him, which isn't a super heroic trait. Sitting through endless gags felt like a chore, and by the time it stopped being such an onslaught I did not particularly care about or like the title character. Seeing him go from solemn, thoughtful and even kingly at times in Endgame to the court jester here... I'm glad that you felt it was a nature or in-character progression for him but honestly it felt very calculated to me, something done because we all know Waititi can't do anything else with the character rather than because it made any sense for him as a person.

No it’s not bad at all. It over does jokes at a couple moments. Thor is acting so unlike himself because Jane is there. When she’s not around him he’s normal thor, but the moment he sees his hammer and her, he copes with how both of those relationships ended by being jokey and pretending not to take things seriously. When they’re on the boat the two of them, talking their feelings, it’s pretty serious. But especially in the hospital room, no jokes at all. It’s a really sad type of scene where thor is wanting her to live, and Jane just says. “Says the person without cancer” the movie has those elements in it that are done really well. Some jokes were meh or overdone but I really enjoyed the movie

Make the movie darker by focusing on Gorr (Omnipotence should have been its own movie)

I thought this film would use the silly nature and comedy to create a stark contrast between thor and gorr, and eventually give thor a wake up call after he realises, as a god, he has responsibilities, and gorr would make him realise that he has to confront the sins of the gods, and that this flamboyant "finding himself" adventure is not important, and realise that he has reverted back to the arrogant self centred god. Instead this doesnt happen, and gorr captures kids, for literally no reason, and if anything, goes against his character as he is endangering innocent children, and his whole motivation to kill the gods stem from the fact that they didnt help him and his CHILD. And thor is just turned into a joke. There is literally no emotional weight in this film because you feel no stakes, or emotion due to the movie force feeding the fact that this is just a whimsical comedy, undercutting literally every scene that could've been emotional with joke after joke. And even if there weren't jokes in Jane's death scene for example, the whole relationship and their "arcs" havent been taken seriously or been provided with any sort of emotional depth whatsoever, so what? They expect me to care now that shes dying ? Because the whole movie THEY didnt even care. Idk, it's a huge disappointment and one of the worst films I've ever seen, I cant believe I'm saying that about thor, especially after ragnarok infinity war, and even engages depictions of him do so much justice to the character

The thing I find interesting is they list all these people that Thor lost but they never mention the Avengers. The Avengers were his friends and Earth "family". Tony died, Black Widow died, Steve is gone, and Hawkeye retired. The only one left is Hulk. Yet this is never mention in his list of people he has lost.

I love your work and the way you frame your thoughts but I gotta hard disagree on this one. This is the first MCU product that I leant over to my other half and asked if she wanted to leave. It all felt done for the lols with no consideration of the on screen themes, character history or our own lived experiences with Thor. Each to their own but your takes here feel waaaaay more than generous.

Wow, I agree that Thor 4 does reaffirm the “love” between characters (except for Gorr) but saying that Ragnarok was undermined by stupid jokes in emotional scenes? That was literally every scene in Thor 4. I don’t know where you got that from

Unfortunately id have to disagree with some of your points I think the comedy was wayyyyy overdone and it did acc detract from some of the emotional parts of the movie like Thor giving hope to the children and Valkyrie disturbing him. Just tooo much Also I think the visuals oh this movie are some of the good things about it. I really enjoyed the Visuals. The fight scene at the shadow realm was beautiful imo. And Gorr was criminally underused. Even Thor had more kills shown to us than Gorr and yet Gorr I'd the villain?? They could have shown Gorr actually killing a number of the gods that would have made him an even more terrifying villain and would have made audience fear for the kids after they were abducted. But again the comedy was wayyyy too much It worked for Ragnarok cuz it was a breath of fresh air, but this was dialed up wayyy too much . I think the Russo's had the best version of Thor. He was using jokes and comedy to hide his grief which was awesome. Overall though I think it was okay and quite enjoyable but not great.

For me Love and Thunder felt more like an SNL skit of a Thor movie for most of it but the jokes don’t land well and runnings gags outstay their welcome. It’s almost cringe. Too many jokes and not enough time to sit in serious dramatic moments that wouldve meant more if it had more room to breathe. Plot and story felt very rushed and we got to things with characters that don’t feel earned in the midst of a million jokes a minute. The emotional beats dont make you feel the way it should. Christian Bale deserved better for sure. He was amazing as Gorr and needed more screentime to show more of his story, character and him actually butchering Gods but it kind of felt out of place in this more comedic movie. Its like if Heath Ledger as Joker in terms of performance and story was thrown into a SNL sketch. Gorr shouldn’t have been the villain for this tone of a movie which sucks to say because Christian Bale was amazing. There were no stakes really. Watched Ragnarok right before Love and Thunder and Ragnarok had a way better balance between jokes, drama, tone, dialogue, story, and character development. And the jokes in Ragnarok landed way better than in Love and Thunder. The theatre i went to only had a big laugh the first time the goats came in and screamed but that was really it. I really didnt like Thors character or his arc much in Love and Thunder. Thor has gone through the most tragedy and loss, yet his character in Love and Thunder is like when he went to SNL to do skits of Thor. He is a caricature, not someone who is humanized or one that you can empathize with. Thors best trilogy and story arc is between Ragnarok, Infinity War, and Endgame.

Honestly, with how aimless it’s felt the past year or so, I was really anticipating Thor to the the film to really give us a major puzzle piece to what the new phase has been building to. I’m starting to think quantumania is going to be the movie that tells us where it’s all going.

So interesting the perspective and subjectivity of how we view movies. Others have stated here, but it's like you reversed movies as I would see them. For me Ragnarok had a better balance of humor and serious moments. Whereas love and Thunder lost a lot of the potential gravitas and really brilliant themes to jokes that didn't land or didn't know when to stop. But hey, your perspective is appreciated. Keep cranking out the good videos. Even if we don't see eye to eye, I love the way you present your thoughts and this was no exception.

Okay. Ragnarock was a movie about Thor and Hulk being buddy superheroes in faraway planet. Yes, Odin dies and yes hella is up to destroying Asgard but those are separate storylines and really no one cares that much about Asgard anyway. This movie was about a character that wanted to kill God's cause they abandoned him and his daughter. He kidnaps kids and we find out he was right. You see how this movie has a philosophical angle that needs to be addressed. IMO, Ragnarock and LAT are fundamentally very different movies. Just cause the format worked for Ragnarock doesn't mean it also works for LAT

Thank you for making this video. I thought I was the only person on earth saying that Ragnarok was the film that ruined its emotion with gags. Love and Thunder has more heart and better emotional moments. It makes no sense to me how someone can love Ragnarok but not even like Love and Thunder. They're not that different. And the things that are different, like character moments that actually tug at you, are done better in Love and Thunder.

The movie was fun but I enjoyed this mostly bc I like the character of Thor not so much the mcu. Thor as a character is really good and his comedy works for him most of the time (not always). The fact he knew to the day of how long they’ve been separated feels like something Thor would know. It feels real. But the goats and other comedy stuff is what hurts most of the mcu movies. A lot of time is just poorly placed and feels like a break in the actual narrative to force a light hearted “joke”. I watched this movie bc previous movies did a great job building the character of Thor. But I haven’t watched a lot of phase 4 shows/movies bc honestly I haven’t felt the same of how other characters were build up and the narrative of most mcu movies is too samey/similar it gets boring. Also, like with comics, the interconnection of the tv shows and movies is now building too high of a barrier of entry for new and continuing fans to get into. It’s why comics still suffer and pale in comparison to sales of manga. The she hulk show… looks terrible. I will definitely rewatched all the Thor movies, I don’t see myself ever rewatching the ant man movies or eternals

Just because I love mythology. The Goats are actually a homage to his actual mythos as a Norse God. He had both of them actually, which have interesting names which can be found with a Google search. They pulled his chariot around and also he ate them every night and resurrected them with Mjolnir the next day. One has a lame leg due to his leg being broken while being eaten by some of those dinner company.

for me this was a hit and miss. I enjoyed a lot of parts in the movie, some jokes were really good had me laughing a lot, but I do believe that some of them over shadowed a very important part in the movie. I understand your point that the growth in Thor is consistent but I still feel is very lacking and it feels a lot like the guardians dynamic in their own movie. For Thor I feel that his character didn't change yes I accepted love in his life again and decide to protect Gorrs daughter but at the end its the same Thor but this time with a kid at his side instead of the guardians or his friends.

Hollywood has become very good at giving people the illusion of what they want on a superficial level, but it doesn't take audiences long to realize that it is superficial if they engage with it too often, or are given time to think about it, and that epiphany moment is starting to occur faster and faster, so whereas films like Avatar, or The Force Awakens took years and then months for people to say, "hey this actually wasn't very good" we've seen that period shorten from one week to the next. MCU films are often given a pass by saying, "they're average", but a film with a 250 million dollar budget has no right to be just average, it should be a polished gem, and a lot of these films look that they could have done with a few more rewrites rather than the rush job we seem to be getting.
