The uneven quality of Phase 4 of the MCU post-Endgame has made for a bumpy ride. For every Black Widow (yeah, I know whatever), there's been an Eternals. For every Loki, there's been a Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Will that up-and-down swing of quality be the norm moving forward? Who's to tell? But, for now, at least we can revel in the fact that MOON KNIGHT RULES. Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke enter the MCU with one of the most distinct and thought provoking takes on a hero we've seen from Marvel in a long time and it brilliantly operates as it's own standalone thing mostly detached from the larger MCU. In doing so, Moon Knight is able to put its characters, themes, and emotions ahead of world building mandates that often bog these things down. The distinct creative voices of Mohamed Diab and Justin Bensen and Aaron Moorhead can be felt throughout the entirety of Moon Knight's six episodes giving it such a potent identity and especially, in the case of Mohamed Diab, authentic Egyptian representation. On top of all of that, Moon Knight beautifully and empathetically explores Marc Spector's battle with DID in a way lesser shows haven't. What makes Moon Knight such a beautiful entry into the MCU is that FOR ONCE one of these Marvel movies or Marvel tv shows took the time to focus on their characters and their emotionality in order to SAY something with the art being presented all while still delivering and exhilarating, mind-bending, action-packed, adventure. Moon Knight is the best MCU tv show and not only that, but it just might be the best thing Marvel has produced in this ongoing phase 4. Moon Knight is Perfect. Griffin (@griffschiller) gives you his Moon Knight review and explains why Moon Knight is perfect, Moon Knight ending explained, why Moon Knight is my favorite mcu movie in years, and what the mcu can learn from Moon Knight going forward! Enjoy this Moon Knight analysis!

I loved the show but I don’t know why the show is so divisive or maybe it’s just me researching too much into reviews or what people think about the show. The thing I don’t understand is the sloppy writing criticism. I thought a lot of the episodes were paced great and I didn’t feel that it was written badly. Maybe it’s because I’m a kid who isn’t a movie critic but even if the show isn’t perfect, I still give it a 10/10

Harrow could be better. Like maybe add a few more scenes with him as moon knight, show how he was disillusioned towards Khonshu. Like it would add character depth to Harrow and hammer home the manipulative side of Khonshu towards the end. Though the series does not suffer from it, just be better. Season 2 lez go!

The other marvel shows rely too heavily on the MCU in my opinion. I didn’t feel like it was its own thing. You would have to watch the movie before and the movie before that to even understand what’s going on. But for moonknight, you don’t even have to watch a Marvel movie and TV show to understand what’s going on. It’s its own thing. Kind of nostalgic because it feels like the old marvel movies like Iron Man and Captain America.

I get your opinion and agree to an extent, but I’m still happy that the other series felt interconnected to the greater universe. What makes the mcu so special is that everything fits together so nicely and that storylines of different shows and movies can connect with each other so well. Honestly, if they showed Loki and didn’t mention the greater mcu in terms of his relationships with his family and the past evil deeds he had done, it would fall flat because no one would know the significance of him finally opening up about himself and explaining why he does what he does. Same thing with Wanda. If they made that whole series and not once went back to past mcu events to show why she is so grief stricken, the show would not be complete. FATWS needed to be based off of a lot of what happened in the mcu because it’s literally a spin-off of captain America. Even moon knight mentioned the greater mcu with nods to madripoor and the Ancestral Plane.

I have DID, and Moon Knight has been a very special show for me. Not only it presents someone similar to me with sympathy, it's allowed me to open conversations about it with my friends other than "aren't you scared you don't remember"? Also, interacting with the fandom has been fascinating, seeing the way people talk about something so foreign to them, but which has been familiar to me all my life. It's also a much safer way to talk about it without online anonymity, without having to put myself in the vulnerable position of disclosing my DID and being treated as mentally ill, when usually I can just pretend I don't have it and people's attitudes about you are completely different and kinder when I do. I've seen people confused about how it's not obvious to everyone in Steven and Marc's lives what's going on with them, but I see people around me ignore all wild signs everyday, people are just like that. I'm glad to see other people enjoy it, I hope we get more, and it's not just forgotten by Marvel.

Did Moon Knight present DID in an accurate way? I’m curious if they did or if they “Hollywooded” it up a bit.
@ma.2089
@ma.2089 2 жыл бұрын
@@arc4859 I don’t have DID, but I can parrot some things ppl said. a few of the things I’ve heard is that the mirrors stuff is inaccurate (but that’s cuz film is a visual medium and they needed a visual way to sort of show how the personalities were aware at different times/talking to the current personality, without just inner monologue/showing how they felt/consistent visual theme of reflections). It’s sort of an abstraction (I think it’s hard to create an overlap between realistic, interesting, and comprehensible in art). Another one is that when alters switch, their eyes don’t roll up usually. It’s kinda like losing consciousness and not as extreme as it is in the show. It might also be a visual way of showing it, with the eyes being the window to the soul, so showing it sort of “switching over”. I can’t say for sure if that’s what they were going for.
@alephnulI
@alephnulI 2 жыл бұрын
@@arc4859 It was sort of both. Like M.A. said, the mirror thing was adapted for the visual media, you can just talk with them in your head, and some people can see themselves in a mental space called the Inner World while chatting, so even though the mirror thing wouldn't happen in real life, you can hear them and see the expressions on their faces mentally anyway. It would just be strange to do that in a movie, transport them to a mental realm (which is sort of what people guess the Mental Hospital is for them). People with DID who share one body are called a system, and a system like Moon Knight's system could exist in real life, however not with the progression they did. You usually take years to go from total blackouts to instant communication and switching like in their last episode. So it's kinda like rushed growth equivalent, but still pretty good. I see people complaining online a lot about the eye rolling, but even though it's unusual, it can happen. It happens to us rarely, but only when we're sleep deprived, which Steven kinda is. What happens to us all the time (and other people we know), and what they might be trying to convey with the eye rolling, is the fact that pretty often when we switch quickly, our vision goes weird, either making colours look weird, out of focus, or going blind for a couple seconds. That's why people will often blink a lot after a switch. That may be why they went with the eye rolling, it's an easier way to convey their vision's temporarily failing, and more noticeable than making Oscar Isaac blink a lot.
@arc4859
@arc4859 2 жыл бұрын
@@alephnulI Very interesting. I’m glad the show presents DID in a semi reasonable way. So your personalities can see what the others are doing when they’re not in control? Also, how does sleep work with different personalities?
@alephnulI
@alephnulI 2 жыл бұрын
@@arc4859 Yeah, the Inner World is like an imagined room that can look like anything. Not all systems have them, it actually seems most systems don't have them, and if they can see each other, they're just in like a black void. We do have a full world, though, with rooms, furniture, toys, we can go there to just relax and calm down if we get upset outside while someone else who is not upset takes over. We can look at other alters in there and see what they're doing, they may be distracted with mental tasks while we're doing something else, they may be asleep or just chilling, or they can be watching whoever is controlling the body and talking about it like Steven and Marc do. Sleep is extremely complicated. The body needs 8 hours of sleep and all, but we're not all in the same sleep schedule, and if there's one alter awake, the body is awake. So we get very tired most of the time. Some nights someone will fall asleep, then a bright awake alter will switch with them and get up, then the sleepy alter will front again and be very sleepy. It's a lot to organize, so we're always tired, much like Steven and Marc's system. It almost is like sleep walking and sleep talking, but not really. Usually we use music to sleep, because music tends to ground that one alter in place so no one else switches around.

One of my favorite things about the show is how it shows that child abuse does have a dramatic and definitive impact upon a person in adulthood. I have cPTSD and anxiety disorder from my child abuse and episode five really triggered me, I actually wish they had put a trigger warning on it because I was not expecting that. Episode five really hit so close to home for me and I actually had trouble coming down for a couple days afterwards because of how much it impacted me. Child abuse is not some thing a person can just “shake off” or get over because it’s just not that easy when your primary caretaker actively hates you and abuses you ( my mother is mentally ill and has never been stable in her mental health care.) Wonderful show and I’m glad it really does highlight that childhood abuse does impact a person into adulthood

I think the only problem with the show is the fact that I just wanted more. Another 20 minutes in the finale would’ve alleviated the rushed feeling it had. At the end of the day it’s a show. The final episode was embarrassing….also, why is such a critical scene put post credits while the actual end of the episode was just a flat, dull, unresolved cut to black? The whole final act just felt like one big ‘dues ex machina’
@ma.2089
@ma.2089 2 жыл бұрын
@@misternobody855 cuz many marvel shows do post credit scenes? The whole point of the show was the emphasis on Marc and Steven’s relationship. So it ends with them and what they’re aware of. Everything that happened in the final episode was foreshadowed or mentioned at some point, so while somewhat rushed, it wasn’t out of nowhere or Deus ex machina. Marvel shows tend to leave a lot of plot threads to be resolved at a later date (which isn’t fair for this show compared to the others since we don’t know when MK is coming back, or how) so leaving the lesser details that aren’t as relevant until later is fine. I don’t see how it was a dull cut to black, the ending was satisfying. It finished off the main emotional core of the series. Now going forward there will likely be things to test that, but things different from where it started. Book ends and all.

@@ma.2089 Spoilers ahead: But to me that’s the issue- this was supposed to be a stand alone season- not extended into a season 2 as expected by many. Knowing that, I didn’t appreciate 6 episodes that only foreshadowed small parts of a bigger story. I understand that it’s about Mark and Steven, but then why give the bad guy such a build up with no pay off? He gets beaten off screen- then killed post credit by another personality we haven’t yet seen? (and if it was only to be 1 season, his new personality gets a total of like….20 seconds…and that’s not Steven or mark so I have no real attachment) They introduce the first ever Egyptian super hero, female and cool, great. Then….yep…no idea where that goes… There’s a big fight scene in the background between the croc lady and kosh- cool, only the croc lady is slurping up souls to get her power while the out of nowhere kosh comes in with super size? Why tho…and what equates to the literal souls of people to give him power? Establish rules. The afterlife….oh boy…doesn’t that have big implications for like….everything Marvel? And then so much more… I can deal with a few “huh” moments and move on, but too much becomes a bit silly . you end up checking how long the episode has again because you can’t fathom how they can put all these pieces neatly together. And I wanted it to work- I think the main characters are acted incredibly well and literally save the series. Also yes, a critical scene shouldn’t be post credits- to me that’s a bit insulting to the audience. Some small hinting Easter eggs are fine….nick fury calling Ms Marvel doesn’t affect the finale of endgame since it adds very little…small things like that should be reserved for fans. I don’t want to sit through credits to hope I understand why the bad guy was beaten off screen. If it was a movie- where I’m from- they cut it in theatres as credits roll, so in the early days I missed a lot of post credit Marvel scenes and never felt loss in the next instalment. Anyway, that’s not to say it’s garbage- to be honest it’s really well done regarding production, casting and themes but switching the writers in episode 6 really hurt its landing. Not all the writers fault, this should have been 8 episodes or better paced. That’s just my long rant of an opinion

I've seen reviews complaining that being an MCU property held the show back because it couldn't get as dark as it needed to, but I disagree. I think we often conflate darkness and brutality, and that the latter can often be a crutch to achieve the former without needing good writing and acting. For example, if you want a really easy way to get dark and sad, kill a dog like in John Wick. Moon Knight broke me not with a death or violence against a child/animal, but with the line "That's the whole point of you."

I want to bring up the symbolism behind choosing the name "Layla". It is a special Arabic name in the Arabic Poetry and Literature that you can consider it as an Arabic "Juliet". The perfect woman to love. There was a poet (Qays Ibn al-Mulawwah) aka Majnoon Layla (Majnoon means the one who is crazy in his love but also means the mentally unstable person). I think daredevil still holds the best mcu show title imo Edit: since I apparently caused controversy here's my tiny review, hope it helps. moon knight is atm is my second favorite mcu show. It had some clever camera work here and there. And episode 1 and 5 when they went into the mind of Mark Steven and Jake we're really well done. Some of the action sequences were clever, namely the street fight in the finale. It also was really good at not wasting your time with the 40 minuets it got unlike most mcu shows. Though it does have some flaws imo like Layla's tiny arc in the final episode felt so forced like the endgame girl power scene. There was also a sense of it not knowing what it wanted to be like if it wanted to hop between the action adventure or the phsycological thriller. This is kind of a nitpick but I'm not a fan that completely rewrote his powers from the comics. Overall I give it a 8 or 7 out of 10

Although I’d love a moon knight movie, I think a second season would be much better. I feel like it should be mentioned that its important for Steven and mark to work together but not be “one” as that could be seen as saying fusion is the best way to deal with DID, (fusing identities) which I believe has a history of being problematic and ableist. Luckily (or maybe on purpose) moon knight doesnt do this and instead had Steven and Marc learn to be friends, coexist, and even become better than they were alone, rather than “cure” their DID by fussing them. I was really happy about the ending :)

@milestogo3050

No fr! Being “one”/ultimate fusion as the “cure” is highly ableist in reference to OSDDID. However, most people who arent familiar with the disorder will not be aware of that. Ultimate fusion is A path to wellness, but so is a cooperative and cohesive existence. Both are ends of a spectrum as well. Truly it depends on each individual system’s treatment plan and what their specific needs are. Within the show there are some ableist tropes at play (I’m primarily thinking of the the evil alter bait and switch with mark, and I’m assuming jake now too). The idea of an original is also problematic for a lot of systems since it doesn’t really apply and can be used to make other alters “less real”. The overly dramatic switching, which is a way to convey to the audience that it’s happening at all… it’s not a good look. It is symbolic of how cohesive their journey becomes and it’s obvious in the end through the seamless switching - however. There’s still realistic ways to portray switching that doesn’t make it seem like an alter is outright possessing a body. I’m sure there’s others that I can’t think of, and I do think they need to be addressed. I really really appreciate the way the show didn’t make the system seem ins*ne or the like. It actually took steps to make it clear they’re not, that they just need help. It even made a sorta meta joke about it (with mark opening the asyl*m doors and realizing wait shit what). There’s so much in the show to be appreciated that I can love and relate to even with the tropes at play. This is a revolutionary work, especially with the way it’s a nonwhite system!!!! That’s a milestone we haven’t seen in osddid media at all!!! This work is incredibly special to me and to a lot of other systems out there and I hope it gets the chance to become even better!!! I didn’t catch the Jewish Avatar/Egyptian Deity relationship as master and sl*ve, great one on that @filmspeak!!!! Also the jake switch at the end had me shitting I was literally screaming NO WAY it was so fucking good. Cemented my love for this show it’s so amazing.

I got a link to a channel of a DID System reviewing this series, and according to her, it gets DID really well. Yes, there is fantasy superhero factors, but it gets a lot right. And I don't see it as Marc coming to accept himself, it is Marc Spector accepting, learning to communicate and co-operate with his Alter, Steven Grant. Everything I have seen about DID says that the goal is to establish commination between Alters, identify the reasons individual Alters exist and learning how to deal with those traumas.
@TheMimiSard
@TheMimiSard 2 жыл бұрын
Here is more that I have learned about DID - Alters exist to protect the System. Steven seems to be an emotional protector, living the softer emotions Marc cannot, Jake - as little as we see of him - may be the one who does the most bloody actions that even Marc cannot commit. So Marc and Steven have come to terms, built bonds and communication, and now they have each other, but Jake is an Alter who is still hiding himself from the other two, to protect them. Maybe he's protecting them from Khonshu abusing them, by being Moon Knight in their stead.

I had never heard of DID before watching this show, but it actually made me want to research it & find out more. I'm glad that people with DID felt comfortable with how the show dealt with it. Mental health isn't spoken about enough, it isn't represented in the correct way on TV either, like Oscar said in some interviews recently, it's usually the villains that have the mental health issues & they are just portrayed as crazy, this show changed that, mental health doesn't mean crazy, in some cases, I think it is a superpower, just like they said in the show. Some people have complained about the lack of Moon Knight & action, but the thing I loved about this show so much was that they really dived into Marc's back story, explaining his traumatic childhood & how his DID started. I don't think any other Marvel character has had their back story explained in depth like that. The Superhero side of the show is brilliant, I love seeing Moon Knight & Mr Knight kicking butt, but when we cut to Marc/Steven, the show changes to reality, real people are living with DID, real people go through trauma, Oscar Issac made you feel every emotion, just like you were going through it with the characters. Everyone that worked on this show really should be proud of themselves, they created something fresh & exciting & hopefully something that will open people's eyes to mental health. I really hope they get another season because there's alot more they can do with these characters & they've already proved they can hold their own, they don't need to be a sidekick in another heroes film or series.

I’ve seen some say that Harrow went to a literal asylum. I understood it is the same pre-afterlife but it was highjacked by Conchu and his avatar. I’m still very confused. Episode 5 was beautiful. Let's just say you would understand better if you knew more about DID, People with DID can have so many alters without knowing. Marc needed to come to peace with himself, aka what he knew a bout himself, aka Steven. How could he come to peace with someone he doesn't know or remember? What people get wrong about DID is that people don't create their alters, they are just there from the beginning as different moods or fantasy's as children, and normal people get all those moods and personalities to merge as they grow up, but when you go through a continuous abuse or trauma as a kid all those moods and personalities fail to merge and they start developing on their own and protect each other instead, so you could say that Marc isn't the original, he's just the sad and depressed side that took the beating, and Steven is the happy and playful side of the same person. And Jake is probably the rageful side that was growing inside of him without him knowing, and since Marc just met Steven so far, that's the one he needed to come to peace with

It felt more like, a story of an addict (or someone with a mental disorder) that even with progress, even with HUGE progress, there is always a battle. It was a hopeful ending, and I'm not sure there's a character I've ever been more excited to see be continued, I just think the real beauty was that the journey wasn't done. Not because there's another big bad villian, not because of thanos, but because even with how far he's come...those victories you referenced earlier....weren't full. One of the most underrated scene of this show was when Marc saw his mother's face at the door, he stopped, closed his eyes and told himself "it's just a memory.. it's just a memory" Really makes the audience empathize with him. Like, if he ever rubbed off as an a-hole before, that scene just gives you no choice but to root for him. You totally get it when he desperately tries to stop Steven from exploring his memories. I really want to see any therapist-youtuber react to this show.

Slight Spoiler: The series was phenomenal from beginning to end. However, I did feel…conflicted about the ending fight. Not showing Jake Lockley was, in a way, a good move…but at the same time it felt cheated. Like it was weird seeing harrow with the upper hand, then bleeding on the floor the next second. Felt like a cop-out. But everything else: 👌👌👌

It managing to stay accurate to the comics, DID, and Egyptian mythology is insane for a superhero show, absolutely incredible in the amount of effort and passion put into it as well. Also I genuinely thought Oscar Isaac was British when watching the show, playing two very different characters. I love shows where you can empathise with the antagonist too, he truly was willing to lay down his life for what he thought was right. And what I thought was going to be another lame female love interest became her own badass character, an Egyptian superhero. incredible show I honestly never expected Marvel to create something this brilliant.

I would've forgotten Moon Knight was even part of the MCU if it wasn't for the intro. I think that is good, it was a short series, so by not distracting the audience with plot points and teasers, it was nice to be just fully immersed in Marc and Steven's story.

I think this is gonna work much better if there were more episodes. I can definitely feel the rush mostly on episode 6. Disney and Marvel should stop this 6 episode bullsh*t. Like imagine Daredevil coming back with just 6 episodes. So I think it's not the Director or productions fault. It's this super limited episode that makes the show so little space to move.
@banf7425
@banf7425 2 жыл бұрын
☝️this. At the same time, I think there is something to be said about only having a limited time frame…once you get too many episodes it becomes soap opera-ish where drama is created for dramas sake. I think only have 6 episodes helped remove a lot of filler and forced them to keep a good pace. I do agree though, finale felt rushed a 7th episode would not have been misplaced. Still my absolute fave series D+ has put out, especially MCU wise.

@@banf7425 there was already a lot of filler in the 6 episodes. There was the "obligatory action for the episode" that didn't really need to happen. And then a lot of the stuff that happened just seemed to happen to progress the plot and for no other reasons which was pretty disappointing.

"We are Moon Knight, and we never needed you." This is my favorite line from the comics. Although I've never read them, I saw that page. I realized how those words, as simple as they are, are really impactful to say to Khonshu. It says something to the reader/viewer, too. You don’t need an abuser like Khonshu to feel validated for your problems. That's what I've learned from Moon Knight, which will remain my favorite show until the next best thing. Although I don't know if I can connect to and love another show as much as this one. Thank you, Moon Knight.

I REALLY hope we get a second season. Marc has come to terms with Steven, who is an innocent caregiver there to comfort him and support him through his PTSD. Now that he has seemingly make amends with Steven and freed himself from Konshu, it is a PERFECT time to bring Jake into the fold. Imagine, it would be something we have NEVER seen in the MCU before. Marc's two biggest weaknesses combine to form the ultimate threat. His abuser that forced and manipulated him to murder many people in the name of vengeance, and the ultimate concoction of his mental instability and anger (Jake). Seeing Marc's exterior abuser working hand in hand with the darkest part of himself is perfect writing material. Unlike every other MCU show, Marc can't just punch away this problem, he is forced to live with it for the rest of his life.

Wonderful video bro! So glad I found someone who encapsulated why I loved this show much more eloquently than I ever could. So many people kept complaining about how the harrow and ammit thing was rushed, or making overreaching theories about how the asylum was an illusion by khonshu and jake?? or whatnot, when really the essence of the show was Marc and Steven bonding and connecting with each other! About the whims of gods and how they affect humans, I mean layla even said "marc died fighting your wars" to khonshu and harrow literally became who he is because of khonshu "your torment forged me". So the season ending with khonshu manipulating marc and Steven ONCE AGAIN and still having jake trapped was so fitting! I never bothered with the other mcu shows because as you said, they always seem to be a means to expand the mcu, you have to watch 5 other movies to understand their context. But moon knight is such a great standalone even non mcu fans can love it. Also Oscar Isaacs acting was phenomenal I would say give Oscar and Oscar but I don't like that whole system, Oscar Isaac deserves more than that

Already 6 minutes in to this video, I realized that the Gods in Moon Knight probably have goals related to their own guilt. I think Konshu wants to rid the world of evildoers, because he himself thinks it's unfair that Gods do not have to be punished for their bad deeds. Konshu probably did something in the past, and was forgiven instantly just because he was a god, and thought "this cannot be right", then proceeded to try to eradicate everyone who had done wrong. On the same note, Ammut probably thought the same, but knew that she wanted to do more bad deeds, and nobody would stop her, so she decided to stop evildoers both in the present, and the future. I can only assume the other gods have similar traits, powers and goals, that reflect their world-view. Of course, I have not read any of the comics, and I can almost guarantee that they state different reasons for their powers and goals; but this kind of logic would be a good supplement to the Asgardian power manifestation, where their powers and forms come from what people of Midgard believe them to be.
