Well to be as neutral as I can, Tibet has been like a colony of Qing since about 300 years ago. They placed a general there that had higher power than the lama kings. Kinda like how India was a country but still under British raj's rule. When the Qing crumbled in 1911, the republic (ROC) replacing it didn't have enough power and attention to keep Tibet under occupation, so it sorta became functionally independent. But ROC still claimed to have sovereignty over it, and because ROC was a western ally, nobody would recognize Tibet as independent from China. And what happened after PRC you are all familiar with. So I think the Hawaii comparison is actually pretty good. If the Hawaiian royalty were still around and took refuge in another country, and the US was suppressing Hawaiian's freedom of religion, you would see people carrying Free Hawaii flags around too. So the real problem is not whether China is the "legitimate" owner of Tibet, but whether they treat the Tibetans nicely.
@WanderingLucy5 жыл бұрын
Very well said
@colonelsmith78295 жыл бұрын
The most non-biased comment here. At least you're not an obnoxious pro-Tibet person. They are illiterate with history. Even when Tibet claimed to be independent, it is debatable on how much of a country it really was. Considering that it lacked recognition. Just as you mentioned, the ROC still claimed it. The League of Nations also recognized it as apart of China. That doesn't mean what China is doing to Tibetans is right still. Nor does it justify what actions China has done to Tibet. While the PRC has a very harsh relationship with Tibet, the ROC's relationship wasn't much peaceful either. They went to war two times with Tibet. But the ROC didn't take extreme meassures on Tibet or Tibetans. Anyway, well said.
@alanfriesen98375 жыл бұрын
I couldn't have said it better myself. The only thing I'd add is that the more people advocate for Tibetan independence, the harder it's going to be on the people living in Tibet. There's no realistic chance of independence in the near future but the insecurity that independence sentiment fosters leads to distrust and oppression by the authorities regarding the people.
@u06jo3vmp5 жыл бұрын
@@alanfriesen9837 There is no way the Tibetans can get independence, if China step out due to some magical event, India would step in. @alanfriesen98375 жыл бұрын
@@u06jo3vmp While I also agree that Tibet isn't going to get independence though I don't think it's because of a threat from India. Those mountains are a hell of a barrier and I don't think India has the capacity to project power through them. An independent Tibet would definitely be under constant pressure from India, China, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam regarding water supplies but the only one of those countries that could sustain a presence in Tibet is the one that's already there.

The bigger question is, if western definition of "country" applies to Tibet, or even China as a whole? China being a multi-ethnic country, has many ethnic groups with unique cultures and religions, inhabiting in certain regions of China. Allowing Tibet to break out, is the starting point of dismantling China. Multi ethnicity/culture/religion is not unique to China, many other countries should be torn apart: United Kingdom does not make sense, India is an obvious victim and Native Americans/Australians/Canadians deserves their own government within the respective territories.

Tibet was a nation in the history. and in fact many of you don't know, Tibet was a threat to the Xin Jiang, and other regions to the middle earth. There was a powerful empire called Tangut empire that ruled Tibet and part of Xin Jiang. During Tang and Song Dynasty, Tangut kept on invading the Tang and Song, and in fact Tang and Song was the side that being invaded and tried to counter attack. This is due to the lack of natural resources in Tibet. Tea is essential. Tea is so important in the daily lives of a Tibetan, because there are not much vegetables you can consume in Tibet, Tibetan people eat beef and drink milk, and vegetable is very rare food for them, even until now, fruits and vegetables are still expensive in Tibet, but of course way better than it was in the past. And Tea can be stored for a long time and it produces crucial nutrients for health, that is why the Tibetan Tangut Empire attempted so many times to invade Tang and Song, because they need tea farms. The wars between the Tang Song Dynasty against the Tibetan Tangut, was easy on the plain, but when it comes to counter attack on the Tangut empires cities, it is difficult due to the altitude sickness, people from the eastern part of China cant handle this when they enter Tibet. and thats what made Tibetan Tangut always a threat that is so difficult to get rid of. and in fact the Tang and Song had no interest for Tibetan lands because they are agricultural nations and it is the Tibet area is not suitable for agricultural economy. But Mongolian eventually destroyed the Tibetan Tangut Empire, and was ruled directly as a province, then the Ming Dynasty replaced the Mongol empire, the Tibet also surrendered to the Ming, but Ming never rule Tibet directly, so it basically remain politically isolated but not economically , the leading body in Tibet acknowledged the Ming emperor as their emperor, else Ming will cut off their tribute relations and the tradings, which is crucial to the Tibetan' survival. (in the tribute system, the tribute state actually earns more than the side who receive the tributes, because the emperor must rewards them more silks, teas, and porcelains in return, thats why many neightbouring nations actually volunteerily to be a tribunal state of China. Then Qing dynasty came, they sent officers to rule Tibet together with the monks, because the Qing dynasty realized the ambitions of British from the another side of Himalayas. The british wants to take over the Tibet. and even after Qing, the threat is not over, but the enemy changed from the brits to the indians. President Nehru's forward policy is too dangerous, India conquered many small and weak nations and they targeted Tibet. and the conflict between China and India still continues today. its all started with the McMahon line, the brits simply drew a line on the map and claimed it was the border line because their army can reach there.

The Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama ruled Tibet, and the emperor ruled the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama. It was originally a very simple matter. Tibet is an autonomous province of China, for 700 years. The British invaded Tibet from India, and the weakness of the Qing empire complicated the situation, and China's communism and the Cold War made the situation even more complicated. Tibet will not be completely independent from China, and China will not allow Tibet to become independent. Tibet cannot be without the economic support of mainland China, and China cannot be dragged away from the control of the source of the two mother rivers. Tibet's independence will only plunge Tibet and mainland China into unprecedented disasters. The 14th Dalai Lama knew it very well.

Then we have the communist invasion in 1950. As a Chinese, I don't recognize China's sovereignty towards Tibet, and would never.

The google definition makes Texas a country (as well as Vermont and Alaska), Texas has a history different from every other state, has its own state government and has a defined territory.

Texas is, to a degree, a country. State is synonymous with country, and the “United States” is a strategic union of what would be individual countries.
@daltonmiller55903 жыл бұрын
If by that definition, "Texas is a country," then Tibet would be a country too. Because the Tibetan Autonomous Region has its own government with its capital in Lhasa. But we all know that neither Texas nor Tibet is a country, so therefore the definition of a country must include not just any governance, but _independent_ governance.
@gamermapper3 жыл бұрын
Nation, not county. There's nothing wrong with that definition, it's cool to view on a map of like cool cultures around the world but it just becomes arbitrary. While Arizona is a nation, so is the Navajo Nation, way more even. But the American southwest also is a nation that's part of the Mexican homeland.
@gamermapper3 жыл бұрын
@@daltonmiller5590 all those words have multiple meanings tho. While for most people, "country" means like those governments that are independent and stuff, it's not the case for the UK where Scotland is a country while not being independent at all. But honestly what's even the meaning of "independent and stuff"? There's a word for that, it's sovereign state, but it's not as common. Though sovereign states are in the UN. But how sovereign do you even have to be? Some entities have a lot of autonomy but aren't un the UN. The country of Micronesia and Niue have similar statuses but one is in the UN and not the other. But what other words are used for sovereign states? Just "state" (the state of israel lol). But as you can see in the US, its territorial divisions are also called states despite by far not being independent.
@daltonmiller55903 жыл бұрын
@@gamermapper This is why I really dislike the UK using "countries" as the correct term to refer to their subdivisions within the United Kingdom. I'm 99% positive that no other soveirgn country in the world uses the word "country" to refer to their subdivisions. We have words like "provinces," "states," "territories," "departments," and even the French "regions." These are words to solely refer to subdivisions within a country. Hell, you could even just call them "subdivisions." The UK using the word "country" for their subdivisions muddles the very definition of country. Scotland is not independent (not yet at least lmao). Neither is Wales, or Northern Ireland. I don't care if it's tradition to refer to them as such. The historical era of Welsh/Scottish independence was over centuries ago. They aren't countries anymore by global definition. The UK should give it up and just start using "provinces" or something. Scottish pride will heal.

Pabin Gurung you're right, modern Nepal as in Nepal with the political boundaries of today didn't exist then. But the name 'Nepal' has been around for much much longer than just the past 200 or so years since the country's formation. Some scholars say it's derived from a kirat word and others have other theories. When Prithvi Narayan Shah invaded Kathmandu valley, the valley was referred to as Nepal, which is why Newari is known as Nepal bhasa(Nepali is a different language). Also why the king's army were called Gorkhalis and not Nepalis at the time. Regardless, when people think of Chinese and Nepalese, they think of today's China and Nepal. China(as a country) didn't have the same territory as it does today in all of its history either so the same logic can be applied to Nepal too. The kingdom Bhrikuti was from might not have been called Nepal but China's name is a fairly recent one too(came from the Qing dynasty). Either way, what is of importance is what kind of influence they had on the ruler of Tibet, Princess Bhrikuti introduced Indo-Nepali culture while Princess WenCheng introduced Chinese culture to the ruler and the Kingdom.

1. Was Tibet an independent country before 1912? Tibet was an independent country before 1246. From 1373 to 1578, Tibet rulers paid tribute to Chinese Ming dynasty government many times. In 1642, Dalai Lama invited a Mongol tribe’s troops to come into Tibet to fight other opposite Tibetan groups. Tibet was then controlled by this Mongol tribe. This Mongol tribe voluntarily submitted to the Chinese Qing dynasty in 1653 for Chinese support to defend against west Mongols. In 1705, Chinese emperor abolished the 6th Dalai Lama for his violation of Buddhist obligation, and ordered him to be arrested and sent to Beijing for punishment. He died on the way. Since 18th century, Dalai Lama had kneed down towards Chinese emperor’s picture many times during ceremonies. China posted a garrison in Lhasa from 1751. Tibet respected Chinese government’s sovereignty, which is typically shown in the selection of the 10th Dalai Lama in 1822. Britain and Russia recognized Tibet as a part of China in 1906. China ruled Tibet directly from 1910 to 1911. Since Manchu are Chinese citizens and support China’s claim on Tibet, Chinese regarded China after Qing as a legal successor of Qing dynasty. (In fact, Western countries made sure China became the successor of Qing dynasty, so that China could continue to pay the huge ransom owed by Qing to the West countries after it was defeated in 1900.) 2. Was Tibet an independent country between 1912 and 1950? After the collapse of China’s Qing dynasty in 1912, China witnessed a lot of civil wars and warlordism until 1949, but did not denounce its claim on Tibet. Tibet never declared independence towards China or other countries during this period. (The 13th Dalai Lama himself denied (to the British) that he had ever authorized the Russian subject--Agvan Dorjiev, to sign a treaty with Mongolians on behalf of Tibet. So, that 1913 treaty is not valid.) USA officially recognized Tibet as a part of China in 1943, way before communist China existed. No country in the world recognizes Tibet as an independent country, or officially regard Tibet as not a part of china, or officially regard Tibet as occupied by China. 3. Why Tibetans rebelled in 1959? Before 1956, most Tibetans were serfs, and most lands were owned by noblemen and monasteries. The part of Tibet (central) ruled by Dalai Lama enjoyed very high autonomy within China from 1950-1959. China launched land reforms in the Chinese directly ruled (east) Tibetan areas in 1956, taking land from noblemen and monasteries and distributing them to the serfs. Rebellion led by noblemen and monasteries broke out in east Tibet in 1956, with independence as the slogan to get support from serfs, and spread to Lhasa in 1959, encouraged and supported by the CIA. 4. Does China repress Tibetans and practice cultural genocide? There is a long covered fact (by all parts involved) about China and communism. Chinese communism was created with the help of Soviet Union, and controlled by Stalin. After the Second World War, Soviet Union supplied Chinese communist troops with captured Japanese weapons including 2700 artilleries, and produced ammunitions and weapons for communists in Russia-occupied China’s north-east. USA organized an international arms embargo to the troops of Chinese anti-communist government. Chinese nationalist government troops were poorly equipped with little artilleries and ammunition. Communism caused at least 60million Chinese death. The truth is: communism was forced upon to Chinese by Soviet union with the help of U.S. So, China should not be blamed for the destruction of Tibetan culture in Cultural revolution in Tibet.

None of Tibetans is fighting for U-Tsang and Kham (the part you just mentioned). Every Tibetan fights for all three provinces; U-Tsang, Amdo (Domey) and Kham(Dotho). Whether Tibetans fight for Autonomous or Country, Tibet consists of these three provinces!
@huangwu2563 Жыл бұрын
" Tibet consists of these three provinces!" No. As an Ethnical Chinese person whose family lives in Qinghai (Tibetans call it Amdo) for more than 10 generations, I believe Tibet could be independent or at least they deserve more freedom from the CCP but saying Amdo as a part of Tibet is just ridiculous as saying Tibet is a part of China. Although many Tibetans live in Amdo and 14th Dalai Lama was born in the region, Amdo is and has been the home to more ethnical Chinese (Han) people and Hui and other ethnical groups that identify themselves more as Chinese than Tibetans. Compared with the predominant population of ethnic Tibetans (86%) in Tibet autonomous region, there is only 24% of the population in Qinghai province (which highly overlaps the region of Amdo) who are ethnical Tibetans and the rest of them identify themselves as Chinese rather than Tibetans. And this is not just the situation now. The demographic picture of the region has been more or less similar for hundreds of years. My Chinese ancestors, for instance, has been mostly living in a town there (in which most residents are Han and Hui) at least since 1750, which is recorded on our genealogy. If the Tibetans are more realistic in their independent movement, they should not claim Amdo as a part of Tibet. You cannot claim a region as your territory just because 24% of the population there is your ethnic group. Otherwise Singapore and Malaysia should belong to China and in this regard you are somewhat even more greedy than the CCP in territorial claim. Tibetans are from U-Tsang and the Chinese are from Zhongyuan, so strictly speaking the Chinese and Tibetans are all settlers, rather than natives to Qinghai/Amdo. The settling of both ethnical groups in the region and the wars, conflicts as well as the fusion and mutual influence among the two peoples and with with other ethnic/religious groups in the region have had a history of thousand of years. The Chinese living here for generation also have a long history and spendid and profound local Chinese culture. I am so sick of the western media who claims this beautiful home to so many Chinese people like me for generations as a part of Tibet just because Dalai Lama claims it. And since it is now governed by China and Tibetans are the minorities in the region, you should really not say it is a part of Tibet. You can criticize CCP and many Chinese people who are pathetically chauvinistic and arrogant, but don't let this stance grow into a general hate towards Chinese people and please think twice when you want to agree on a claim even if it is anti-CCP. Otherwise you lose people like me as your ally and you are encouraging war and conflict rather than peace and reconciliation.

He gave the recommendation to talk to someone from Tibet, which I think is absolutely the right thing to do. However, one thing to keep in mind is that unless you are going to China, most Tibetans you meet outside of China are part of a very small minority, and much of that demographic left Tibet due to reasons that often put them in contention with the CCP. 94% of Tibetans are not outside of Tibet. As far as I know, there is no reliable poll to show what Tibetans actually think. I once stayed with a family in Tibet for a few weeks. Interesting that AtlasPro mentioned that you could get arrested for a portrait of the Dalai Lama because that is exactly what this family had up in their main room. We mostly talked about everyday things. I learned how to make yogurt and had the best lamb I've ever eaten. But we also sometimes talked about more interesting topics. They told me about how the kids of the town engage in ethnic group based brawls (this was a town in north Tibet where there were sizeable Hui and Han populations), they told me stories of PLA mass executions. But they also told me that they know that their lives are way better now than they would have been if the CCP hadn't taken over, given their status, and that they know their history. I know this is super anecdotal but I really do wonder what the actual public opinion within Tibet really is.
@CentauriSphere2 жыл бұрын
This sounds absolutely horrible. Which kind of heartless people accept mass executions and ethnic brawls for a bit more money? I'd rather live without electricity and running water, but in freedon and peace. Same with the Dalai Lama, he is an oxymoron.
@magnetospin2 жыл бұрын
The thing people gloss over is that the average Tibetans don't care about being independent. It's just not important to them. The people who want independence are mainly Lamas who missed their days of glory and want to treat the average Tibetans as serfs. Tibet was a hellhole before the CCP took over.

Just a small remark from a social scholar: the "something in common" thing must be PERCEIVED as common by the people in question. In other words, we need a national identity, a conviction that "we belong together". Otherwise you could say that Wallonians have more in common with French than with Flanders, or Germans and Austrians, or Polen and Lithuanians are a single nation. Heck, we can even have a Russian doll national identity, as in the case of British. Scots, Welsch and English belong to British nation because they believe that they do. Otherwise there would be no reason to stay in a single state.

Very well compiled video. If I may add something to it. Regarding the geographical history. Tibet has always been country consisting of all three provinces(Kham, Amdo and U-Tsang). Thus showing Tibetan Autonomous region which comprises of U-Tsang alone as Tibet is wrong. Secondly, the 17th point agreement signed by representatives of Tibet was under gun point. Though Tibetans were forced to sign the 17 point agreement but China never followed any of those agreements. Thus it led to the exile of the Tibetan people in alien land.

I would more say as for example, CGP Grey says as well that "A country is a country as soon as most of the other countries accept that the country is a country". While I don't think that there can be a clear definition of what a country is because you, for example, have to exclude the least country like country that's still a country and include the country most country that isn't, like Vatican City and Hong Kong. And the definition you presented doesn't. But I still think the definition you used isn't a bad one I think that i cut's a bit short, even though I totally agree with you.

>"A country is a country as soon as most of the other countries accept that the country is a country". And that basically translates, logically and practically, into "Might is right". Any intelligent person can see that. And yet hypocrites continue to think that, despite millennia of human history attesting to the contrary, that sovereignty is about the original settlers of a piece of land forever holding independent political power in that land. That has not been the case for the Native Americans after the arrival of the European settlers, for the Dravidian population of the Indian subcontinent after the arrival of the Aryans, that has not been the case for the Slavs of the Carpathian Basin after the arrival of the Magyars which eventually transferred the land to become a decidedly non-Slavic and even non-Indo-European Hungary -- I could go on. The most common response to the citing of these historical precedents is that "well, these happened a long time ago", which is in essence a terrible argument because that basically implies the total abandonment of any proclaimed belief in "original territorial justice" in exchange for a "grandfather clause". It also says: "Sure, 99% of Americans today are decidedly not of aboriginal stock in this land, but that's okay because the vast majority of the world has decided to let it go". In short: Even when they say they are against "Might is right", their entire existence and selective apologetics indicate otherwise. Even shorter: Hypocrites gonna hypocrite-ize.

@@tenzinsherap136 Must it be Tibetan land? Why is it destined to be Tibetan land? The determination of the territory is determined through wars, conquests, international treaties, and treaties between nations. It doesn't matter who lives on this land, North America was originally the land where indigenous peoples have lived for generations! It belongs to white people now.From ancient times to the present, the territory has been constantly changing. This land has been inhabited by dozens of ethnic groups including Qiang, Tibetan, Hui, Mongolian, etc. Why should it be Tibetan land?
