I frequently come in contact with Christians who do not want to hear or have any intellectual conversations about faith and the bible. I find this is unhealthy because they can be swayed to believe any wind of doctrine that is appealing to the ears. You say that during the revivalist periods in our history the church seemed to abandon intellectual understanding. Who's at fault here, the new believers or those who were already scripture based Christians? The existing church was more at fault here than brand new believers. Why is it that when God begins to pour out his Spirit and sweep many into the kingdom of God, does the existing church spend more time pointing fingers than it does coming along side these precious new believers and teach then the things they need to become firmly based themselves?
@dubyag41243 жыл бұрын
I think we ARE pointing the finger at the "established" church because the revivals of the enlightenment were the first "seeker sensitive" church outreach. People heard the gospel yes but where they discipled as we are instructed to do? Same critique applies to Finney and Graham. Walk the aisle but is there anything more? There is! That is the point Alisha highlights very well and is described by Christ in the parable of the seeds. Some seed sprouts up quickly but burns up because it does not have deep roots in theology and truth. Warnings against theology and knowledge making us arrogant (which does happen all the time) doesn't mean you don't hunger and thirst for knowledge of God as a Christian.
@htebazileeilsel22933 жыл бұрын
Those "revivals" were false though and gave birth to all sorts of goofy nonsense- the people who started those movements weren't even Biblically sound. A revival isnt people falling over and "speaking in tongues", a revival happens when Gods people begin truly seeking God and obeying His Word. God has been pouring out His Spirit since Pentecost.
@htebazileeilsel22933 жыл бұрын

Read the context of Ecclesiastes 1, it's not saying that wisdom is bad, or not worth pursuing. Solomon is clearly depressed at this stage and currently finds everything in life meaningless. In his current thoughts he feels, even though he has gained much knowledge and wisdom, that it is 'madness and folly' and is like 'chasing after the wind'. He no longer finds meaning in it, even when it actually does have value. I'm afraid you might have also fallen foul of the 'only read 1 bible verse' problem...
@brando33423 жыл бұрын
@@alexwr What you say is true, but also a life lived only for wisdom and knowledge with no admiration for the humbling greatness of God is similarly folly. We can seek knowledge, while understanding our place and if “understanding our place” requires us to say “You know what? I don’t exactly understand and I don’t have to.” in the face of God; then we ought to be willing to do that. Again though, we should seek knowledge, but there is nothing wrong with saying “I don’t know, but God wants that for me.” Much like Abraham didn’t know why God told him to sacrifice Issac.

@@brando3342 It's one thing not understanding exactly what God is like, I agree with you there. It's another thing to disagree with basic theological points because somebody didn't research enough. I agree though, if we're not living any aspect for the glory of God, we aren't doing it right. We can make a pretty good assumption that Abraham thought that Isaac would be raised from the dead. He knew that God had promised Abraham would be the father of many, he also knew that nation would come from Isaac. In his mind, what's the only possible explanation? That God would bring Isaac back from the dead, right?

Alisa, I'm so much like you as I realize the more I learn the more there is to learn! One quick reminder that was good for me on perspective from a wise mentor was around what "knowledge" are we talking about? I love apologetics so I love to engage the intellectual side with others so I sometimes tend to get focused on issues and study from there. But I was told to make sure and have a good balance of also studying Biblical Theology as a whole as that is critical to inform and gain knowledge when focused on Apologetics. So I was challenged for my book reading (outside of reading the Bible of cours) to always read one Theology focused book for every Apologetics book...I thought that was helpful. Good stuff!

WHAT??? This post makes a good point. I have used this illustration before but it was an eye opener for me concerning knowledge as opposed to just accepting tradition. My guess is that the vast majority of Christians in our part of the world believe that Christ was crucified on Good Friday rather than Wednesday which is 3 days and 3 nights from Sunday (resurrection day) which was the only sign Jesus said would be given concerning Him. The sign of Jonah. When is studied this and found that the Wednesday to Sunday scenario fit easily with all the gospel and other scripture accounts I was amazed that I was never taught this and when I had asked about it in the past I always got some theological answer that didn't answer my questions about there not being 3 days and nights between Friday and Sunday. So yes, knowledge makes a difference, sometimes inconsequential and other times very significant.

Is too much head knowledge bad for christians? :) Define. My fast one-word response these days. It's 2021, every single word is up for grabs, definitionally. Longtime CCM fan, good to see ya. I got your book, look forward to reading it. Maybe I should watch this video before commenting on the title, but I have a feeling that after I do, my response will be roughly the same. 1) Knowledge puffs up but love edifies. 2) My people perish for lack of knowledge. Also begs the question: who are my people? I have learned to trust those who believe in word-for-word Genesis 1-3 original meanings - or who treat such with seriousness and are kind to the young earth creationists. Similar with those who treat the gospel message of Jesus' atoning work with the same respect. This exact issue used to trip me. There's nothing like a good relational riddle in life. I struggled with this (as a oneness pentecostal, as I formerly identified myself - the early beginnings of my current overall philosophy). I was taught not to trust my own heart OR my own mind. Much of this, I later learned, was nothing more than (uh) family rivalry between I and the older members of my family who thought they knew more than I and would pre-empt any of my independent thought. :) Suffice to say, the battle isn't over yet. This is gonna be fun. Love and grace. It's hard won in my family, VERY hard one. I trust the Bible now more than ever. Certainly more than I trust myself or anyone that I have ever heard of. If that makes any sense. Now ask me again about head knowledge - I'm more likely to examine the life and trusted authority structures of the person asking the question. Now that I KNOW enough to examine such issues with any competency and consistency! I know who I believe: the God of the Bible. And how should I progress? In love and trust toward Him. I say this as - a grandchild of a rough-around-the-edges German immigrant who worked with wood (who really wasn't that good at communicating and was NOT a bible reader himself).

Not only do we need to study constantly/deeply for our personal walk with Christ, but also to combat the mass amount ignorance/mis-information about scripture out there ("earnestly contend for the faith"). I love your example of Paul...he was one heck of an intellectual. Epistemology is an underrated subject for Christians. The question, "how do you know, that you know?" is very important. One thing is for certain we need knowledge if we don't have knowledge we wont know the truth and then after that we will get ourselves deceived and thrown right out of the narrow path and put in bondage to sin and we will not be able to repent of it at all with that being done God calls us to freedom to save us from our sins He doesn't call us to be left in sin and be destroyed by it. Understanding is much needed as well knowing the truth of what is written in Psalms 49:20 Psalms 49:20 Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish. Too much sin is bad for us.

Spot-on! Blind faith, or ignorance, is not encouraged in the Bible, sadly there is an extreme dichotomy going on in the Christian faith. Excellent job.

@@A-SON-OF-GOD And there you go. You placed my argument in there as well. Regardless of gender, we are all called to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord to all tribes, tongues, and nations until the end of the age.

@@A-SON-OF-GOD It's simple: the people, those who dwell in Christ. Here's the issue: she's speaking truth, so are you having issues with agreeing with her or the truth? Paul pointed out that there are those who are using the message of salvation for their own gain. He said to let them do what they are doing, as long as the message is being preached. So do you are do not agree with the Scriptures she is sharing or having a discussion with me about her speaking because she is a woman speaking Scriptures? Again, are you having issues with agreeing with her or the truth presented in Scriptures? I mentioned that God does not promote ignorance nor should our faith be of ignorance, or blind faith. Do you agree with this or not?

@@A-SON-OF-GOD Thank you for showing more of your perception about me. You have me very wrong. God bless.

@@A-SON-OF-GOD And if you are going to have a conversation, then at least answer the questions I present. I know that feminism is big, but that doesn't mean a woman sharing the Scriptures is being used by the enemy. That is the extreme opposite of feminism, of putting down a creation of God. That shows a lack of honor and respect for a creation of God that he sent his Son to save.

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV “Study to shew thy self approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” The ones I’ve seen that were the most puffed up were the ones with the college diplomas (not all of them!) and those who blindly follow. And therein lies the danger - if we, ourselves, don’t study, it becomes too easy to be misled. Remember the Bereans in Acts 17? Acts 17:11 “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” So, we should study daily, increasing our knowledge and in seeking the truth. The Bible provides us with correction and instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16) We can do this while remaining humble at the same time. It doesn’t matter how much one knows if they are puffed up and not approachable. He/she won’t be able to teach anyone anything. Enjoyed your video, ma’am! It’s an older one (2 years now), but the first to come up in my KZbin feed.

I guess in a way, I understood the question in a different way. Knowledge and wisdom are two separate things, the first one utilizing IQ while the second one accesses EQ. This is where 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 enters. "¹If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. ²If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. ³And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing." I think it's something that we could all ponder about.

Most intellectuals are in the therapists clinic, the mind has to be renewed by the Word of Christ. Knowledge, understanding, wisdom and intellectualism are different things I think. Intellects are mostly mind based.

Hello Alisa. The Bible tells us the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. This fear is not a terror but an awesome respect for God. The awesome respect that we have for God should compel us to increase our knowledge of Him. The more knowledge that we have of God the more responsibility we have to share Christ with a lost and dying world. When the United States became a country with a Bill of Rights to protect the citizens of the United States came with it and Unwritten list of corresponding responsibilities of citizens to protect those rights. United States is in great trouble these days because the citizens have failed to understand their responsibilities to protect their freedoms. The church rushes toward the throne of grace to obtain mercy and help in time of need, that is failing in the knowledge and understanding that God has sent us to share that knowledge of his love and grace and power to save The Souls of the lost and dying in this world.
