Hey everyone, hope you enjoyed the latest episode of Glaring Admissions! Don't forget to drop your own glaring admissions over in the comments! Who knows, maybe one of us hasn't seen it either or would be down to do a rewatch of it for an episode anyway!

Its crazy and confusing seeing people so violently hate a movie like this, and its nice to see some positivity. At the very least the film just ok, seeing people hate it so much never made sense to me. I admitedly have a lot of bias because I grew up watching the original movie on VHS despite how young I am, but it still seems blown out of proportion.

Nah I’m with you on that. Like I can get not being crazy about it but hating it with such a passion does strike me as odd. They’re both very well written and crafted movies. Formulaic, yes, but they get a lot of mileage out of their formulas and don’t try to break from them 🤷♀️

The only major problem I have the movie is they made it less gay than the original

Top Gun Maverick is one of the best action movies of the 21st century. But after watching both films several times, I think the original has a more impactful story and character decisions.

I felt the sequel had a more impactful story than the first one did, but u definitely agree it’s a top tier action flick. I didn’t even get to share the story in the episode but I realized how potent its story was when my Dad saw it. He isn’t much of a movie guy but the way he locked in when Mav got shot down was absolutely hilarious and spoke to how much it grabbed him lol

Check out the essay by Eyebrow Cinema, deconstructing Top Gun Maverick as just a better than usual blockbuster in a mediocre film era, more visceral than a MCU joint, but that's it mostly

Call me nuts, but that’s 100% all it needed to be in my opinion. I love the movie and do think it’ll be considered a classic (or at least a very noteworthy footnote when discussing the original), but a large part of that has to do with how dire blockbusters had gotten a few years ago and how it delivered a relatively clear cut, crowd pleasing movie that didn’t veer into how the MCU handles crowd pleasing. It felt more mature to me in a way I can’t help but respect.

I watched both back to back last year. I'm old as hell but never saw the original Top Gun, though I knew everything about it due to cultural osmosis. And watching Hot Shots a lot. And after all this time . . . it's a total nothing of a film. Got nothing out of it, and Maverick is a creepy sex bastard following that lady into the toilets. Urgh. Maverick was better since it had a plot. But I've gone right off it after watching the 'No CGI is Invisible CGI' series of videos. Got me angry seeing all the promotional material bang on about "practical" effects when it got as much as CG as a Marvel flick. Really hate how undervalued and demonised VFX artists are.

I kinda felt that way about the first movie after I first saw it as a teenager. I liked it more than you do, but I was just like “oh great, it’s a movie.” Time away from it definitely helped me though. It’s since grown into a movie with a soundtrack I can’t get enough of, and I’ve come to really appreciate the Tony Scott of it all and how strong its screenplay is. Mav is definitely a creep in it though. As for the second one: yeah. I can’t stand the way people sold it as no CGI when it was anything but that. It’s such a snapshot of what I dislike about the industry and the pivot from the idea of “movie magic” to false authenticity.

@@NicheCaesar Most insane expression of that is when they got the VFX guys to get rid of the greenscreen in the behind the scenes footage of the making of Barbie. Make it seem like they were on location in Barbie land or some nonsense

Yep, I saw that part too. It’s pretty gross

I am still astounded at the positive reaction to Top Gun Maverick. It was awful. Looked like a last season episode of Airwolf.

Both Top Guns were equally vacuous.Bunch of guys talking too much and chasing each other through the clouds, what's the point?

Top gun maverick was a dogshit movie relying completely on nostalgia
