The reason the viewers root for Toranaga lies in the way the scene is set up. Toranaga is on the loosing side, with which we naturally always sympathize. He's portrayed as competent (though in lying), brave (going against multiple enemies). Those are just some of the few ways in which a movie or a book can create a likable character
