I feel at this point they have started to look to this man more as a religious figure. I literally was told by my conservative grandmother to "pray to/for Trump". Whatever he does can be interpreted as justifiable to his audience. He says what he wants, he's offensive so that makes him "sound like he's part of the working class that's just fed up. Sometimes I wish we could do away with the electoral college and I have a real love/hate thing for it, but it is doing exactly what it is supposed to be doing; giving proper weight and representation to all states. For instance, the entire population of Wyoming probably amounts to the population of one high rise in NYC....and that's not much of an exaggeration. Then factor in that only a few states (like California and New York) would matter to a candidate if we ditched the Electoral College and those states would dictate policies etc. for the entire country. The bottom line is Republicans seem to only win by cheating somehow, and they will always find a way.
