Tv girl is actually known to be openly being cynalist and most of the songs are kind of a reflection, To give an example, the chorus of Birds Don't Sing explicitly talks about how his ex left him without warning or explanation. On the other hand, the verses clearly show him being an asshole and not listening to her, giving us the explanation behind their breakup that the singer has failed to grasp. So to me, the song is really about how it's hard to see your own flaws sometimes and it's much easier to pretend that the people who "wronged" you had no reason to do so, and there was nothing you could've done to prevent it. A song criticizing its own protagonist. I genuinely thought this was intentional.

People said the same shit about death metal, about Cannibal Corpse fans. They have this stereotype of obese man with black T-shirt and long greasy hair, which haven't been washed for years. Same about black metal. I just don't understand why people became so gatekeepy and call everyone who don't share the same life, views or interests "problematic". The "problematic" word lost its original meaning. Now people just throw different accusations on any public person, without any investigation or proof. To be "problematic", you need to do actually problematic things like stealing, cheating on someone, doing violence etc., not just having a playlist which wasn't liked by a stranger you don't know.

It is bad in the sense that it’s just another promotion of listening to music digitally rather than going out on buying the album, which would actually benefit the artist. For example, often it’ll just be one or two really random “outlier songs” from an album that get big (or even just a clip from the songs) rather than the album becoming popular, and because people are hearing these individual songs on tiktok and then listening to those individual songs on Spotify or SoundCloud, the artist isn’t benefiting because people aren’t listening to their whole discography and buying the music. But it can be a good thing if someone actually likes their entire discography after discovering the artist through tiktok, and then decides to buy the music. So it’s complicated I guess

as a very avid tv girl listener, tv girl kinda feels like a sarcastic take on misogynistic men's worldview. i've listened to tv girl for years and have loved their music through and through edit 11/7/23: ty for the likes! i want to offer a bit more of an explanation into my thinking, i keep checking back on this comment randomly and getting surprised im still practically the top comment anyways, im autistic, sarcasm isnt usually something i understand well. HOWEVER, the misogynistic character of tv girl isnt exactly, just, sarcasm. the main 'character' throughout the songs is just that, a character, not just a sarcastic joke. this is a trope being portrayed through music that has people that fit the trope in real life. its like watching a movie almost but in song. other autistic people might understand where im going with the movie thing LOL but ya, its like recognizing all the patterns / tropes in a movie and knowing whats going to happen in it because of that. you can just kinda tell at some point that the tv girl character is a misogynist after listening to their music long enough. i dont really see how you can overlook it edit 12/7/23: checking back up on this comment again, agree with the first replier's edit :]

i feel like tv girl actually has more fans who are women who complain the music is misogynistic. i’m under the assumption it’s satire and people are just afraid to admit they like music that is “problematic” without writing a thesis on why it is as they give money to the artist by using their audios. just like how lana del rey and marina also had satirical albums and the point flew over young female audiences heads. or courtney love, who has an entire “riot grrrl” tiktok fanbase who claims to hate but dresses exactly like and will not stop talking about her.

another case: i've always said that the 1975 is to men what taylor swift is to women. the taylor fanbase might kill me for this but hear me out. (im excluding matty's actions outside of music) the 1975's music is often called misogynistic but taylor's music is hardly ever called misandrist even though they both aren't. the 1975 is just the teenage boy experience. yes, teenage boys are horny and make bad decisions, they're not like taylor swift's girls who are conserved and indulge in classy poetry and going through heartbreaks. but if im nitpicking through both of their music, i can easily take a lot of lyrics out of context to make both of them look bad. especially lana del rey, my god. i love all of their music though, and none of them deserve to be called misogynist or misandrist.

Ya know. I don't think its a question of is it for boys or girls but rather are you getting the message behind it or not. I don't know a terribly lot about this band, so take this with a grain of salt but this whole thing reminds me of Fight club. That films message is interwoven with the story being a satire of hyper masculinity, yet a lot of people (in this particular instance: especially men) don't get the message and repeat the same toxic quotes as if they are devoid of any underlying message, ultimately making it the exact thing it was trying to condemn. If you like the lyrics for its misogynistic content you are ultimately missing the point. But id argue that both men and women are equally as capable of getting versus glossing over it.

i got so emotional recently listening to one of their songs because of how misogynistic it was because it made me realize my ex viewed me that way (esp since he's the one who introduced me to tv girl 💀) but honestly you can tell from the subtle and not so subtle bits in their songs that it really is just satirical and the singer is acutely aware of his own flaws and immaturity. in "song about me" there's literally a whole verse where the girl is calling him out on his shit and talking about how hypocritical he is, and in "birds don't sing" it is sooo obvious in my opinion that you're supposed to realize the singer is treating her horribly and not listening to her. i also think that women tend to be the subject of their music but not always the message. "cigarettes out the window" has a chain smoker as its subject, but the underlying theme is about the emptiness of life, and "the blonde" talks about a girl who is a natural blonde in the lyrics, but the song is actually a commentary on beauty in society. the lyrics definitely come off as whiny, "she left me so now i hate women," incel-y, male manipulator bangers, but i think the artists themselves are self aware and are portraying a flawed character.

I agree. Most of the time the lyrics come across as "She doesn't know what she wants, I know better, I break a lance for her yet she still fs up, she has double standards, she only wants to use men for pleasure but hurts herself while doing it because she is weak" which really... Isn't an accurate depiction of women at all and doesn't paint a nuanced light. If it were one kind of a song about one girl that would make sense, but they all are like this, which is why it doesn't come off as nuanced or realistic anymore. So maybe either the singer's dating/singing about a very strange kind of woman every damn time and dates them even though he knows they upset him or he/his character, the common perpetrator in all the scenarios, may partly be at fault, in contrast to what is sung about. It's highly likely that they're aware of that. I read in an interview the singer likes to vent about frustrations in his song he knows that are wrong to say to somebody irl. Thing is in my opinion if you have/have to vent these views of the opposite gender in the first place and don't have a nuanced view of relationships and why a man/a woman does what he/she does, then there might be some issues with your thinking you'd have to work through.

ive been a tv girl fan for over 3 years, the fandom is almost nonexistent, its just the people who say they like tv girl music use the relatability of the lyrics as a means to their greed, other than that, it has nothing to do with the band since this is mostly an audience issue, "male manipulators" lurk in other fandoms or audiences of similar artists as well, due to their resonance to the female audience, such as the smith and alex g which were mentioned in this video. other notable ones are deftones, the cure, radiohead and weezer. its the "losercore" that draws them in. much love to tv girl tho!

@@gx1tar1er I think it has to do with the broader trend of how music is being commodified these days because of streaming services and platforms like Tik Tok. Far more emphasis on the smallest, most easily digestable/marketable units of music whether that be singles (since everyone listens to playlists and not albums) or even just 10-15 second long soundbites (like the chorus of that Steve Lacey song you mentioned), both of which demand a lot less interaction with the artist, so its harder to gauge what it means to be a "fan" or have a "fandom". Tons of people have flocked to a select few of these bands like TV Girl or Deftones because they get packaged with another marketable image or identify (goth, alt, ____-core), but it often doesn't reflect a lasting interest or materialize into further engagement with the genres of these bands. “Men don’t listen unless they’re gay” 😂 I felt so seen. I enjoy TV Girl not from the manipulator angle at all but from the acceptance and loss angle of some songs like Song About Me and Heaven is a Bedroom. I’ll agree it’s not the healthiest music and some songs are inappropriate but some songs are touching and catchy.

As a simple 26-year-old girl who barely listened to Tv Girl because of "Not allowed", I'm going to say: "these kids lack street." But seriously, I know that the kids who appear in the video are still zoomers who have too much to live, but even I at that age would find it laughable to assume a person's personality through their musical tastes: it's like that old boomer myth that "you are automatically a genius only if you listen to Mozart after half an hour". In Latin America we have some artists like Romeo Santos and Ricardo Arjona who are known for their quite questionable lyrics due to their content that is considered misogynistic today, and although it would seem that it seems dedicated to "manipulative and misogynistic men" in general they are mainly listened to by ordinary ladies and housewives who only put it on in the background while they do their chores.
@heavenly2k Жыл бұрын
I dont think anyone you interviewed is very educated about what constitutes as misogyny and what constitutes as good faith arguments. It feels like nuance was thrown out the door but then again you interviewed literal teenagers off the street that get their music taste from tik tok. TV Girl's lyrics could be misogynistic whether ironically or genuinely, but these people taught me nothing about that.

@@audreyharper1234 Making songs with lyrics addressing heavy topics doesn't make them problematic. not to be rude but the girl at 4:44, it's the double standards for me. so many female artists or bands literally sing 99% of their songs about breakups (yk like taylor swift) and that's okay but the second it's a guy it's not okay. also, as an avid tv girl listener, trans, and bi guy it's not misogynistic, i can sing most of the songs word for word line by line and most of it is actually about more than just a guy who wants to f*ck girls but can't. a lot of them can be interpreted differently or in a non-sexual way some examples: lovers rock - about how love can be fleeting but great in the moment blue hair - can be about seeing change in yourself or others and not knowing how to feel the blonde - this one is literally a song about how people feel the need to change themselves to be more likeable loving machine - being afraid of losing people or being betrayed safeword - literally about safe sex it almost worked - honestly this could be about self improvement or suicide and failing at it better in the dark - being self-conscious way and that's just a few songs!! lmk how you see the tv girl songs bcs yeah ^^

Right now, I’m looking into them more. I was reading the lyrics of the songs I like and just thought they were experiences turned into songs. Didn’t realize they had a deeper meaning. As a TV Girl fan of maybe 2 years (not from tiktok), I really enjoy seeing takes about TV Girl's lyrics and the band's possible misogyny, so thank you for this video. I'm currently doing reserach for a presentation about media that perpetuates the mindset of a toxic internal loop that women/afabs might have during a traumatic period in their lives. I'm using charcters from shows and movies as examples but I'm also including a lot of TV Girl and Lana lyrics (diet mountain dew, death of a party girl, and every stupid actress), because I think that they showcase how beautiful, sad, lonely, and mistreated women/afabs are still seen as mysertious and intriguing. I used to be in a really bad place and when I discovered TV Girl, I became easier to feel bad (in a way that I still can't describe), but also, listening to TV Girl turned into a coping mechanism for me to just get through the day while going through traumatic events. Nowadays, I'm just incredibly familiar with the music (not too sad anymore, yay!) and haven't really stopped listening. But anyways, I think that the ability of the people you interviewed to just tell you their experiences with male manipulators shows my point. Super interesting video! :)
